The TOEFL iBT, managed by ETS, is a well-known English test accepted by universities and education organizations in the US and Canada and abroad. Its full name is the Test of English as a Foreign Language and it is designed to evaluate all four English skills - reading, listening, speaking, and writing - in a manner that is comparable to how they are utilized in college and university courses.
Candidates eligible to take the TOEFL test can now do so from the comfort of their homes due to ETS' introduction of the TOEFL Home edition, which was created in response to the pandemic.
The TOEFL exam can be taken in two ways: the computer-based TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) and the TOEFL Test on Paper, which was recently implemented in India to reach more candidates. ETS also offers the TOEFL Home Edition, which is a TOEFL iBT test administered from the comfort of the test-taker's home. For all three formats the TOFEL exam fee is the same, which is US$190.
This article will discuss the ETS TOEFL exam, TOEFL iBT test, how to prepare for the TOEFL, registering for the exam, and the updated TOEFL syllabus.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a test of English proficiency for students who want to pursue their studies in countries where English is the primary language. This exam is a major part of the application process if an individual is seeking to study in an English-speaking environment.
Although, a TOEFL score may be waived in some cases, it is completely up to the discretion of the university to decide. The TOEFL exam is conducted by the Educational Testing Services (ETS), who also administer the TOEFL iBT test and deliver the scorecard to each taker.
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) TOEFL exam is predominantly taken by those who wish to pursue higher education in a different country. This test offers them the opportunity to be considered for scholarships and simplifies the visa application process for those seeking employment outside of their home nation. TOEFL is intended to assess the English language aptitude of candidates in the four areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing, which are all skills used in college and university classrooms.
This exam is accepted in over 11,000 universities, colleges and institutions around the world, including educational institutions in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, the US and other countries in Europe and Asia, making it one of the most popular English language tests for aspiring students who desire to study abroad.
Those wishing to study abroad may gain advantages from taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This is especially true for individuals who want to pursue higher education abroad, as TOEFL scores are most frequently sent to universities in the United States and Canada compared to any other English-language tests.
Similarly, more TOEFL scores are sent to German, French, US, and Canadian universities than other English tests. The Educational Testing Service - the organization that administers the TOEFL - also ensures fairness and impartiality in the reporting of scores, making the test more reliable.

Those applying for the TOEFL should know that it is presented in three forms: TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test), TOEFL Test on Paper, and TOEFL Home Edition. The TOEFL iBT is the most commonly used version and accounts for more than 98% of TOEFL exams given around the globe. The TOEFL Test on Paper was reintroduced in response to the pandemic and the need for student safety. Finally, the TOEFL Home Edition is the TOEFL iBT administered from home while a proctor monitors the entire test.
The TOEFL Internet-Based Test, as its name implies, is the online adaptation of the TOEFL exam for those who wish to take it. It is the preferred method of taking the TOEFL because of its convenience and it requires fewer resources. Authorized TOEFL iBT test centres have been established in major cities throughout the country to administer the TOEFL examinations.
ETS is offering the TOEFL iBT Test on Paper in a few countries. It assesses the same four abilities as the regular TOEFL, but is administered on paper in two different sessions.
The Reading, Listening, and Writing sections of the test are done at a testing center, while the Speaking section is done at home with a live proctor monitoring it over the internet. India is one of the countries where the paper-based exam is available. Before registering for the TOEFL, those taking the test must make sure they have the necessary environment and equipment to take the online Speaking section from home.
The TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) was created to assess Listening, Reading, and Writing abilities of test-takers in areas with inadequate or no connection to the Internet. This exam is composed of three sections only, with no Speaking component due to lack of required hardware.
This test is no longer available; however, applicants should not mistake it for the TOEFL Test on Paper. The TOEFL Paper Delivered test is the offline variant of the TOEFL iBT Test. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based) Test has been discontinued as of April 11, 2021, yet the scores from these tests are still valid for two years from the day the test was taken.
In order to accommodate students who are needing to take the TOEFL exam to complete their application process to study abroad, ETS has created the TOEFL Home Edition. This version of the TOEFL iBT test is for those locations where the computer-based format was already available. Aspiring test takers will need to be sure that their system meets the specifications set by ETS before registering for the exam.
Those aspiring to go abroad for their studies must take the TOEFL exam, but there is some confusion about the eligibility for this test. The ETS - the organization that administers the TOEFL iBT - does not require any age limit, educational background, or prerequisites to take the TOEFL.
Candidates can sign up for the TOEFL exam through multiple methods, including the TOEFL official app, an ETS account, by phone, or through the mail. The registration process is available all-year-round and the best way to join is through the ETS account, whether online or with the app. Once registered, students can get their TOEFL score.
To begin the process of registering for the TOEFL, applicants must sign in to the official website and generate a valid profile. As part of the procedure, they should have their passport readily available and ensure that the spelling of their name is correct. Next, they need to comply with a few easy steps in order to complete the process.
After the registration is complete, a confirmation email from ETS will be sent to the candidate. This email should be saved and kept until the day of the test.
The fee for taking the TOEFL examination varies depending on where it is being taken. TOEFL exam fee India is US$190 or Rs. 14,242.11 (calculated at $1=74.96). In addition to this, applicants have to pay extra for additional services such as late registration, rescheduling the exam or requesting a review of their score. The costs of these services are listed below.
Individuals who have secured a test date but would like to cancel or alter it must do so four days before the actual date. It is not feasible to rearrange the test by post, email, or at the test centre.
They will have to call the Regional Registration Centre or supply their complete name and appointment number to reschedule. People can also access their ETS account online and make changes to any upcoming tests. It will cost US$60 to rearrange the test.

The TOEFL exam is scored from 0-120, with each section of the test having a score range of 0-30. The ETS TOEFL evaluates language proficiency in four sections: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
The reading portion of the exam consists of 3-4 passages that are 700 words in length, and students must answer 30-40 questions that include 10 types of questions. The allotted time for this section is 54 to 72 minutes and the score range is 0-30. The passages cover a wide array of topics, and the test measures a student's reading and understanding ability.
The TOEFL Writing part of the exam includes two tasks that last for a total of 50 minutes, in which test-takers are expected to compose approximately 500-600 words combined. The Writing portion is the last section of the TOEFL test and is considered to be the most difficult due to the fact that it evaluates the candidate's ability to comprehend and retain what they have heard, read, and spoken. The raw score obtained on Writing can range between 0 and 5, which is later converted to a scale of 0-30.
The TOEFL Listening section is composed of lectures and conversations, followed by a set of questions associated with the material that was presented. Respondents are allocated 20 minutes to answer each set of questions and the section involves 4-6 academic lectures that last 3-5 minutes each and 2-3 conversations about various topics related to college life.
TOEFL Speaking section consists of six tasks in which participants are required to demonstrate their ability to respond to questions on a variety of topics.

The scores for every section of the TOEFL exam range from 0-30. The range for the TOEFL has been determined through computational methods. India is a diverse nation with people from all walks of life who take the TOEFL for either job opportunities or higher education. As part of its research, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) surveyed data regarding Indian test takers and their level of success on the language proficiency exams.
The graph delineates that a variety of linguistic forms are utilized in India. The TOEFL scores of Indian candidates is usually 90 on average. Moreover, people who speak a South Indian language usually get higher results in the TOEFL than those from other regions. The average TOEFL band score for those who speak a regional language is 23.
The TOEFL iBT curriculum for students contains the four essential abilities of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The exam format encompasses the TOEFL writing curriculum, TOEFL reading curriculum, TOEFL listening curriculum, and TOEFL speaking curriculum.
This part of the exam requires you to read a number of passages and answer 10 questions for each passage. Your score for this section will be based on how many questions you get right.
Questions:
When writing two essays on different topics, it is essential to organize the response in a logical manner and provide comprehensive evidence to support the argument. Additionally, make sure that the essays flow together, have a clear purpose, and make sense. To get a good score on the writing portion, it is important to incorporate a variety of sentence structures and pick the right words, while keeping errors to a minimum.
Questions:
For the Listening test section, there will be a variety of lectures and conversations, all in a campus setting. This section is designed to assess the test taker's capability to comprehend conversations and lectures in English. It will evaluate their understanding of the basics, their ability to link concepts and ideas together, as well as their capacity to integrate and make sense of the data.
Questions:
To get the highest marks possible on the Speaking Section of the test, your answers must meet the requirements of the task with only minor errors. The examiners are looking for a clear and continuous conversation. Three main elements are taken into consideration when grading the section: how it's delivered, the words and phrases used, and how the topic has been explored.

There is no such thing as a perfect or incorrect score for the TOEFL test. Each university has their own TOEFL scores that applicants must meet in order to be admitted. Meeting or exceeding the set score will boost an individual's chances of being accepted, while anything below this mark could prevent them from being admitted.
However, to give test-takers a more personalized experience, ETS has developed four to five proficiency levels for each skill area. Depending on where your score falls within the given range, you can get a better idea of how well you did in each section. There is a chart available to help those taking the TOEFL iBT exam gain a better understanding of their scores.
