About University of Wolverhampton Telford Campus

The University of Wolverhampton is a leading modern university with a tradition of providing opportunity and academic excellence dating back nearly 190 years.

Affiliated with MillionPlus, the University of Wolverhampton is a highly-ranked public university in England with four campuses at West Midlands, Staffordshire, and Shropshire. The main city campus is located in Wolverhampton city centre, with Compton Park situated in a parkland suburb. A third campus in Walsall is based a mile from Walsall town centre, while the fourth campus is in Telford on a greenfield site in the grounds of Priorslee Hall - a grade-II listed 18th Century redbrick mansion in Telford.

The roots of the University of Wolverhampton lie in the 19th century growth of Mechanics Institutes, which provided vocational and general education for working men. The Wolverhampton Free Library also developed technical, scientific, commercial and general classes.

In 1992, Wolverhampton Polytechnic was granted university status and became the University of Wolverhampton. Today our four Faculties offer courses in over 70 different subjects and over 4,000 students graduate from Wolverhampton each year.

We continue to invest in our students, staff, alumni and in the local and international community. We have invested more than £125 million on campus developments and teaching facilities, including £50 million on improving our facilities at Walsall Campus; the innovative Performance Hub; new and refurbished Students’ Unions and further modernisation of our Learning Centres.

Modern industry operates within a highly competitive global market, the adoption, exploration and management of technology across both design and manufacture and product simulation performance is at the forefront of providing successful business with the competitive edge needed to survive and grow. In addition, society is demanding that such business enterprises become evermore proactive in terms of adopting a more socially conscious approach, such as sustainability, across all their strategies and operations.

This course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of modern engineering analysis and simulation tools and techniques in terms of product development and optimisation before manufacture. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of how various IT-based tools and systems function while also gaining insights into how these are implemented effectively, within the manufacturing and industrial sectors. You will be equipped to undertake cross-functional management roles and to evaluate how modern organisations can strategically exploit existing and emerging technologies. This reflects the growing demand for specialists with advanced skills and knowledge to drive forward effective, new, product development and their introduction across all of the major industrial sectors including automotive, aerospace and general manufacture.
The course will allow you acquire advanced knowledge and systematic understanding of contemporary finite element modelling techniques to analyse the behaviour of complex engineering systems and components. It will involve a comprehensive understanding of advanced solid mechanics and analytical techniques pertinent to product development and sustainability, and to apply these advanced techniques to synthesise novel designs of a range of engineering systems.

The overall aim of this course is to ensure graduates have a comprehensive engineering education combined with specialist knowledge of aerospace engineering recognised in the professional engineering community by an accredited degree. The first year of study is very much about mastering the underpinning engineering principles, accompanied by an introduction to airframes and aircraft propulsion, engine testing and design. Year two combines mechanical engineering topics, for example thermodynamics and the role of the engineer in society, with specialist topics that include control and aircraft systems, and airflow analysis and simulation. The third year of study includes topics related to supersonic and subsonic aerodynamics, energy and sustainability and new and advanced engineering materials. Should you choose to study the MEng, then specialist topics such as  emerging propulsion technologies are accompanied with broadening studies that include business and management accounting, and aircraft and airport operations.

What happens on the course?
Whilst the UK no longer builds complete passenger aircraft, we are leaders in providing aircraft systems. These range from Airbus A380 wings and Boeing Dreamliner thermal management systems to Eurofighter Typhoon wheels and brakes, all powered by Rolls Royce aero engines. The overall aim of this course is to ensure graduates have a comprehensive engineering education combined with specialist knowledge of aerospace engineering recognised in the professional engineering community by an accredited degree.

The first year of study is very much about mastering the underpinning engineering principles, accompanied by an introduction to airframes and aircraft propulsion. Year two combines mechanical engineering topics with specialist modules that include control and aircraft systems, and aircraft and space vehicle structures, together with legislation and regulation frameworks associated with the aerospace industry. You will also study engineering management and learn the role and responsibilities of a professional engineer. The third year of study is again a mix of traditional mechanical engineering subjects, combined with specialist topics such as flight aerodynamics. This is developed further in the MEng to include flight dynamics and control and wind tunnel analysis and verification.
