About The Glasgow School of Art

With more than 100 years of experience, professional facilities, teaching excellence, peerless connections, and a vibrant creative community, we’re not afraid to do things differently. At Falmouth University, we’re re-thinking the shape of higher education and delivering impactful research and innovation.

The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) is a higher education art school offering undergraduate degrees; post-graduate awards (both taught and research-led) and PhDs in architecture, fine art, and design based in Glasgow, Scotland.

The school is housed in a number of buildings in the center of Glasgow, upon Garnethill, an area first developed by William Harley of Blythswood Hill in the early 1800s. The most famous of its buildings were designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in phases between 1896–1909. The eponymous Mackintosh Building soon became one of the city's iconic landmarks and stood for over 100 years. It is an icon of the Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style). The building was severely damaged by fire in May 2014 and destroyed by a second fire in June 2018, with only the burnt-out shell remaining.

In 2021, GSA was again placed 8th in the QS World Rankings for Art and Design, with the school maintaining its place ranking for 3 consecutive years. Despite its high ranking in selected league tables, Glasgow School of Art has recently scored poorly for the quality of its student experience in the annual National Student Survey. In 2019 it was the worst-performing Higher Education provider in Scotland in 2020 it was the worst-performing institution in the UK. In 2021 Glasgow School of Art continued to be ranked as the UK's worst-performing Higher Education provider for student experience.

    Accomodation

At the Glasgow School of Art, we offer our students a unique accommodation experience during their time in halls with common area spaces, equipment and events designed specifically for their needs. New undergraduate and postgraduate students to the institution will have the opportunity to stay in one of our purpose-built sites; Blythswood House or Margaret Macdonald House. With both sites being located within a 5 minute walking distance of the main Garnethill campus, our city centre halls of residence make a fantastic choice for new students to explore the city of Glasgow and be within a close proximity to The Glasgow School of Art.

At The Glasgow School of Art, we understand that moving to a new city can be very daunting experience. We aim to make our students experience as stress free as possible by understanding their needs and being as flexible as possible during the application process and once they have arrived at their accommodation. We own all of our accommodation which means you will not deal with any 3rd parties and our accommodation team are on hand for the duration of our students stay to assist with queries. Our halls of residence also have valuable inter-departmental links with the rest of the school including departments such as Student Welfare, Fiance, GSA Sports Services and Sustainability.

    Private Rented Accommodation
If you have decided not to live in The Glasgow School of Art's Halls of Residence or have not been offered a place, then you may wish to look for accommodation in the Private Sector. This is usually housing rented out by independent landlords. This could mean living on your own, sharing with a number of other students, or living in the landlord's own home. Glasgow also has an excellent choice of commercially run student accommodation that you may wish to consider.
