Pearson PLC. developed the globally recognized computer-based standardized language assessment, known as the Pearson Test of English or PTE for short. This test follows the language proficiency levels set by the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and scores range from 10 to 90. PTE Academic is uniquely designed to evaluate and certify language proficiency and communication abilities in an academic setting.

The UK, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand universities and institutes accept the results of the Pearson Test of English. Furthermore, the Graduate Management Admission Council, the proprietor, and manager of the GMAT have approved PTE as an ELT (English Language Test) due to its innovative format in assessing English speaking capabilities. Thousands of academic programs in the United States acknowledge the Pearson Test of English, with prominent institutions such as Yale University and Harvard University being part of the list.

What is PTE Exam?

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is an examination administered on a computer that evaluates the English language proficiency of individuals who are not native speakers and wish to pursue higher education in English-speaking nations.

The examination has three variations: the PTE Academic, General, and Young Learners. If you intend to apply for a university program, opting for the PTE Academic is recommended. This version evaluates your listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills, all conducted on a computer in a three-hour test session. The exam is computer-based and emphasizes the use of English in academic contexts, including aspects such as accents and academic language.

The PTE Academic is widely acknowledged by numerous universities across the globe, particularly in the UK, Australia, the US, and Canada. It is advisable to reach out to the universities you plan to apply to and inquire about their acceptance of the PTE Academic qualification and the required score. Additionally, the Australian government now recognizes the PTE Academic for visa purposes.

There are two forms of the PTE test, PTE Academic and PTE General

  • PTE Academic:  It is most commonly taken by those studying or wanting to start a career in places like the UK, Australia, Canada, and other countries where English is the main language.
  • PTE General:  It is the assessment that people who want to assess their level of English language proficiency take.
  • PTE Young Learners:  Edexcel administers the test which is open to learners aged 6-13. It is divided into two parts, oral and written sections. PTE Young Learners puts more emphasis on practical activities rather than on facts and terms.
