The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is an internationally-recognized, computer-based assessment managed by Educational Testing Service (ETS). It is intended to measure the verbal, mathematical, analytical writing, and critical thinking capabilities of prospective postgraduate students, particularly those seeking an MBA, who need to submit GRE exam results to gain entry to their course.

The importance of GRE scores in a student's successful admission to graduate school can vary significantly from one school or department to another. This exam features three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Analytical Writing, and Verbal Reasoning, and is scored on a 130–170-point scale for the quantitative and verbal sections, and 0-6 points for the writing portion, with half-point increments.

How to get Exam Results?

People who take the GRE exam can access their scores from their ETS accounts. Once their scores are ready, ETS will email them. Additionally, they will receive an official 'Institution Score Report' from ETS.

Time Required to receive GRE Test Scores

After a student's examination, the GRE scores can be seen in the student's ETS account after a period of 10-15 days. The official score report is only visible in their ETS account and is not meant for any other purpose.

 It contains

  • Primary contact information (name, phone number, and email).
  • Gender.
  • Birthdate.
  • Intended graduate major.
  • Test score(s) and associated percentile.
  • Date of test.
  • Recorded scores reported within the last five years.
  • Authorized score recipients.

GRE Score Range

Every student who takes the GRE will be given a score on their report for three specific categories: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Analytical Writing (which includes the essay portion).

Section Score Range
Verbal Reasoning    130–170, in 1-point increments
Quantitative Reasoning    130–170, in 1-point increment
Analytical Writing 0–6, in .5-point increment

What is a Good GRE Exam Score?

To know what a decent GRE score is for you, you need to check the average GRE score range of the university you want to attend. The scores for verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing range from 130 to 170, 0 to 6, and 200 to 990 respectively on a one-point and 10-point scale.

According to the Educational Testing Service (ETS) performance statistics, the average GRE scores for verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing are 153.66, 150.37, and 3.60, respectively, with a final score of 303 (45th percentile).
