About State University of New York at Albany

For over 175 years, our students and faculty have tackled the day’s biggest challenges, answered our most pressing questions, and solved society’s most vexing problems.

We are, and always have been, fueled by a unique mix of academic excellence, internationally recognized research and a profound sense of purpose.

At UAlbany, you'll author your own success by doing the things that matter.

In 1844, a "normal school" was founded in Albany to train teachers for a rapidly growing population. For nearly 50 years, the Normal School provided a two-year education to students from across the state.

By 1890, the evolving school system in New York required a new approach to teacher training. The Normal School gradually made changes: a four-year program, new curricula, new faculty and new standards for student enrollment.

In 1914, the institution officially became known as the New York State College for Teachers — one year after the figure of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, first appeared on the University seal. The New York State College for Teachers focused exclusively on training secondary school teachers, within the context of a liberal arts curriculum. Over the years, the College attracted a strong faculty with a majority holding doctoral degrees.

By 1962, the College had earned national distinction and the State University of New York system of higher education underwent a rapid expansion in response to rising needs. The College joined the system as one of four University Centers and became a broad-based public research institution.

Today, the University at Albany is a major public research university where over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students collaborate with top-ranked faculty to conduct major research and scholarship in a wide range of disciplines.

Inexpensive college

There are many reasons why I chose this college and the affordable tuition fee was one of them. I have an active social life and the affordable tuition fee made it possible for me to work part-time and study at the same time.

Secure Campus

The campus is lovely, the food is delicious, and the professors are wonderful; they go out of their way to help you. The courses are also quite good. I have had an excellent experience with the majority of my teachers. Students can engage with professors and classmates by providing cheap education and keeping class sizes small. By closing and opening doors, patrolling or monitoring using surveillance systems, and reporting suspicious activities, security agents ensure the safety of campus buildings. Housing and rooms are often large and well-equipped, including a kitchen, bathroom, and small living area.

Student library is wonderful

The campus is quite beautiful. Various eating options and resources are available on campus. Study locations are plentiful and quiet. Professors have always been friendly and helpful to me. It's amazing that there are so many different cultures, because it gives me the opportunity to learn about other people's customs, communication skills, and even clothing codes. College has been a positive experience for me. It gives me a sense of belonging to the community, and to the college. The college is currently expanding its gym. The student library is wonderful. I also enjoy going to the sports center and taking part in classes such as zumba and yoga as well as using the exercise equipment.

The faculty members are very helpful.

I have had the opportunity to work closely with several of them and they are full of knowledge and willing to share. I'm looking forward to my senior year with all of the possibilities I have for my future. The campus life is lively. We have a lot going on, and we never get bored. The students and faculty are friendly and there are lots of opportunities to hang out with friends and get involved.
