About University of Warwick

The establishment of the University of Warwick was given approval by the government in 1961 and received its Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1965.

The University initially admitted a small intake of graduate students in 1964 and took its first 450 undergraduates in October 1965. In October 2013, the student population was over 23,000 of which 9,775 are postgraduates. Around a third of the student body comes from overseas and over 120 countries are represented on the campus.

Warwick is one of the UK's leading universities, with an acknowledged reputation for excellence in research and teaching, for innovation, and for links with business and industry.

  • We’re a world-leading university with the highest academic and research standards. But we’re not letting the story end there.
  • That’s because we’re a place of possibility. We’re always looking for new ways to make things happen. Whether you’re a dedicated student, an innovative lecturer or an ambitious company, Warwick provides a tireless yet supportive environment in which you can make an impact.
  • And our students, alumni and staff are consistently making an impact - the kind that changes lives, whether close to home or on a global scale.
  • It’s the achievements of our people that help explain why our levels of research excellence and scholarship are recognised internationally.
  • It’s a prime attraction for some of the biggest names in worldwide business and industry.
  • It’s why we’re ranked highly in the lists of great UK and world universities.
  • All of this contributes to a compelling story, one that’s little more than 50 years old. But who said youth should hold you back from changing the world?

Our Accounting and Finance with Placement Year course enables you to put your studies into practice while learning about a particular industry. You will undertake a work placement during your third year, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge in a real work setting before returning to Warwick for your final year of studies. Alternatively, you can apply to study with a partner institution instead of working.

You will gain a solid grounding in core management areas and develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to operate effectively in the fast-paced world of multinational companies and global financial markets. You will be able to focus your studies in Accounting, Finance or a combination of the two, depending on your future career goals.

You will be encouraged from the outset to think critically, enabling you to analyse and interpret real-life business issues in order to devise solutions, helping to prepare you for your career in accountancy, financial services, or management. You will also have the opportunity to develop your interpersonal skills including communication, leadership and team working, to become more adaptable and resilient to change.

Study abroad

BSc Accounting and Finance with Placement Year students, who meet the Year One requirements, can apply for a study placement (rather than working). This course will enable you to pursue your interest in the history, archaeology and art of the ancient world. It looks at the societies and cultures of the ancient Mediterranean through their written texts, visual art and material remains, from grand temples, monuments and villas to the humble residues of everyday life.

You will benefit from many hands-on learning experiences, including handling authentic ancient coins, recreating the experience of a Greek symposium using replica vases, visiting historical sites and museums in the UK, and taking part in our annual classical play, which is staged at a professional theatre for a public audience of over a thousand people.

You will have the opportunity to study topics such as Greek democracy, the Roman cultural revolution under Augustus, visual representations of Greek myth, or the Roman Near East, in modules specifically focused on Greco-Roman history, art, archaeology and architecture.

Core first-year modules provide a grounding in approaches to Greek and Roman History and Material Culture; optional modules allow you to explore a range of other topics, including the option to learn an ancient language or take an external module.

This four-year Ancient History and Classical Archaeology with Study in Europe degree has a similar structure to the three-year course, but alongside learning about the ancient world you will study a modern European language (current options are Italian or German) and spend your third year studying classical subjects at one of our partner universities in Europe.

Our single honors Philosophy course offers a broad range of modules as well as the freedom to choose your own path through the subject. You will learn how to think carefully and critically about a variety of philosophical questions.

Topics you may study include:

  • What does it mean to know something, and what can we know?
  • What does leading a good life consist in?
  • Is the mind identical to the brain?
  • Should we impose limits on human enhancement?
  • Your first year is designed to help you develop the skills and confidence to succeed on your selected path. You will learn through a variety of teaching and assessment methods in order to foster your development as an independent learner and to help you develop the skills needed to pursue a range of careers.

In your second and your final year, there is a broad array of optional modules to choose from, which allow you to sample a number of different areas of philosophy, or specialise in a particular area of philosophy, such as continental philosophy, or philosophy of mind.

You may also choose to apply for an intercalated year, spent either studying abroad or on a work placement. This extends the duration of your degree to four years and will be reflected in your degree qualification (for example, BA Philosophy with Intercalated Year, or BA Philosophy with Work Placement).

Study abroad

We run successful undergraduate exchanges with Queen’s University, Ontario, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, enabling second-year Philosophy students (single or joint honors) to compete for the chance to spend a full year studying in North America. Modules and examinations are taken at Queen’s and Madison count towards your degree.

All students have the opportunity to apply for an intercalated year abroad at one of our partner universities, which currently include: Bourgogne, Dijon; Erasmus, Rotterdam; Copenhagen; Friedrich Schiller, Jena or Cologne; Vienna; Autonoma or Complutense, Madrid or Seville; Rome or Turin; and Koc, Istanbul. The Study Abroad Team offers support for these activities, and the Department’s dedicated Study Abroad Co-ordinator can provide more specific information and assistance.

In the UK, companies like BMW, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan and Toyota are supported by a huge network of manufacturers, employing highly skilled engineers at the forefront of their field and internationally recognised for the solutions they create. The UK is also home to seven of the world’s 10 Formula One teams.

Our Automotive Engineering degrees provide the skills and knowledge you need to stand out from the crowd. As an Engineering student at Warwick, you will develop an in-depth understanding of the classical principles of Engineering by following a general engineering programme for the first four terms. Study abroad

You may choose to take an intercalated year in industry, research or study abroad between years two and three (BEng and MEng) or between years three and four (MEng only). If you choose to take an intercalated year this will be reflected in your degree title, and add a year to your degree program.
