This degree is recommended for students who wish to work in the research and development area of industry. This program also prepares a student for graduate study in applied mathematics, numerical analysis, or operations research. The concentration in applied and computational mathematics provides a solid foundation in classical applied mathematics as well as computational mathematics, which could be informally described as "how to employ mathematics on computers wisely." A graduate could seek direct employment assisting a group of scientists with the formulation and solution of problems. There is a great need in local and national technical industries for people with sufficiently strong mathematical knowledge to participate on such teams. For example, modern techniques for solving partial differential equations are very sophisticated; the best method in a given situation depends on the properties of the model. Once a numerical approximation has been formulated, the techniques to solve that, and the commercial software available to do it, again require informed decisions.

The statistics concentration also provides a solid foundation for students who plan to become actuaries.

The student can enroll in a Foundation course if he/she has no formal qualifications. Foundation courses usually last one academic year.

Ashwin Katiyar

On showing good performance in the foundation program, one can claim admission to a degree, without any waste of time.

Worked part-time to supply myself

The tuition fee was not cheap and the college was on the expensive side. I had to work part-time to afford the tuition and books.

Innovation is encouraged

My college experience was wonderful; it prepared me for a challenging journey ahead. I was pushed to widen my intellectual and artistic horizons by the College. I was repeatedly informed that I needed to expand my horizons beyond reading. This college offers a fantastic and enthusiastic placement program that ensures that every student has a choice of options for finding work and starting their career. The college puts efforts to mentally and physically nourish each student in order to equip them to meet the challenges of business and the corporate world. The food on campus was excellent, and the cafes served some of the best coffee I've ever tasted.

Fantastic adventure

The campus is lovely and well-kept, and I was fortunate enough to live in a wonderful room. The lecturers were all excellent, and there was always something entertaining going on. The one drawback is that I believe the school does not provide as much for its students as it could and should. Some clubs had relatively few members, making it impossible to engage in meaningful activities with them. I wish I could have had a wider range of classes and a more innovative curriculum. But, generally, I had a great time at the University.

My experience at SJSU was incredible.

I have not only learned a lot but also made a lot of friends. I have been a part of many initiatives to promote entrepreneurship. The faculty members are very helpful and provide a lot of resources to promote entrepreneurship among the students. I don’t remember a single professor who wasn’t friendly and always ready to help me. They even give you a know your professor session before the semester begins. So you can make a good connection with the professor and get good feedback from him. Also, the campus life is amazing. On Saturday nights, the campus turns into one big party and there are tons of events that keep happening throughout the year. It has been a great experience meeting new people from various cultures. Placement support is also very good. The university also has career fairs for the students to meet the recruiters and build their careers.
