Many students dream of studying in the United States. Universities receive thousands of applications from across the world each year, but only a handful are accepted. Therefore, as a student, you should familiarize yourself with the admissions process.
There are two intake periods in the United States: the fall intake, which begins in late August and early September, and the spring intake, which begins in January. Most study abroad students prefer the fall intake, which is the most common intake period. The spring intake period begins in late July and early December.
The process of accepting students at US colleges and universities occurs during two periods: fall and spring. However, summer admissions are limited, and only a few institutions offer programs.
Here is a quick look at how these intakes compare:
The primary/major intake period is from late August or early September to January; the secondary intake period is from January to May. The spring intake period is from May to August.
Intakes | Starts | Duration |
Fall (Primary intake) | Late August or September | September-December/early January |
Spring
(Secondary intake) |
January | January-May |
Summer Intake | May | May- August |
International students seeking to study in the USA after 12th grade prefer the September intake, which begins in late August or early September. This intake has the most number of courses and the greatest funding, both of which are contributing factors.

In order to apply to American universities within the appropriate timeframe, it is necessary to complete the following steps in a specific order:
To start with, it is important to conduct a thorough search for American universities that provide the program you wish to pursue and are affordable for you. When selecting a university, it is recommended to prioritize the ranking of the specific course you are interested in, rather than the university's overall ranking. Additionally, it is crucial to explore the scholarship opportunities offered for foreign students by the university.
It is important for individuals to take standardized tests in order to be eligible for admission. These scores are extremely influential when it comes to gaining university acceptance. For those who are looking to study graduate-level or business programs in the USA, the GMAT or GRE are necessary. For undergraduates, SAT or ACT scores must be submitted to the university in accordance with their requirements. Additionally, international students must present TOEFL scores to demonstrate English proficiency.
If you're thinking about studying in the USA for the Fall semester, it's recommended that you start the application process in November. Most universities have deadlines for Early Decision in November, and for Regular Decision in January. After submitting your application, you'll need to provide some additional paperwork.
It may take universities 8 to 10 weeks to review every submission. Each university will have a different timing. In the interim, applicants can make financial plans, look into scholarships, and find sponsors (s). Students must apply for a USA student visa as soon as possible after obtaining the offer letter because the application procedure can take some time.
