About Sprott Shaw College - Abbotsford College Campus

Robert James Sprott and William Henry Shaw, founders of Shaw Colleges, joined together in 1903 to build the first Sprott Shaw School in Vancouver, British Columbia. Four schools in Vancouver, one in Nanaimo, and one in Victoria were part of the development plans of WH Shaw and RJ Sprott. Sprott Shaw College in Victoria, British Columbia, was founded in 1913 by R.J. Sprott and James Beatty and has been in continuous operation ever since. The institution has weathered two world wars and the Great Depression, all of which have strengthened its foundation.

Sprott Shaw created programmes expressly for the retraining of WWII military soldiers as part of its ongoing commitment to provide accommodating programmes based on community needs. Morse code, radio broadcasting, and aviation were all included in the curriculum. A broadcast station was set up for the college during this period, with a signal that could be picked up from as far away as Hawaii. Famous broadcasters Jack Cullen and Ernie Rose, both of whom were alumni of the institution, manned the helm of the station.

This college’s contemporary campuses now educate approximately 2500 students a year. Small class numbers, skilled teachers, hands-on instruction, and a welcoming learning atmosphere for individuals of all ages are available at all of the sites. Sprott Shaw has earned a strong reputation over the last century based on the quality of its teaching and the impressive track record of its alumni in finding rewarding careers after their education.

Ernie Henderson, the founder of Henderson Colleges, bought Sprott Shaw in 1964 and owned it until his death in 1974. He was the only surviving owner. When Commander Robert N.G. (Bud) Smith bought the Victoria School, he remained in charge of it until 1988, when Terry Hackett took over the school. As a result, the institution has expanded to 16 sites in British Columbia since its inception.

Students may now pursue jobs in nursing, healthcare, business, administration, marketing, trades, design, hospitality, and more, thanks to the use of adult education philosophy in the curriculum. The college has always maintained a strong emphasis on preparing the students for meaningful professions in high-growth areas during the previous century as an esteemed educational institution.
