Environmental Studies & Earth Sciences

Bachelor of Environment and Sustainability

The Bachelor of Environment and Sustainability (BES) program bridges scientific concerns about natural resources with policy development and management. The four-year degree program offers two majors, one in Environmental Studies and one in Resource Management.

Why study environment and sustainability?
We depend on the environment for many aspects of our daily lives, including food, employment, recreation, and natural resources for homes, transportation and consumer goods.  Future generations will have a similar dependence on the environment as we do now; it is our responsibility to ensure that they way we use resources now does not impact access to those same resources by future generations.

This BES equips students with the tools and critical thinking skills necessary to make decisions regarding how we use the environment now with a view to future generations. Students in each BES major take a common set of courses through out the four years of the program. Environmental Studies majors take an additional set of courses from a social science perspective (such as economics, political science, geography) whereas Resource Mangement majors take as set of courses have an ecological or science based perspective (such as geographic information systems, population and resource dynamics, and quantitative methods).

BES is ideal for students who are looking to design solutions that meet the needs of current society without jeopardizing the quality and quantity of resources for the future.  Students take a holistic approach, exploring ethics, ecology, economics, geography, risk, activism and policy, examining issues through both local and global lenses.

Impressive student-faculty ratio

Many students and teachers have remarked that the facilities here are second to none. With a library that's a digital hub, a sports complex that's a must-visit for any sporting enthusiast, and a cafeteria that serves quality vegetarian food, there's a lot to brag about. The faculty to student ratio is very favourable and this has resulted in a superior experience for all students, including those with special needs. This is all due to the fact that the administration believes in nurturing students and not just teaching them. If you're thinking of applying here for your next education milestone, look no further.

Our college's career development cell and personality development class, which began in the second semester of the previous year, prepare students to achieve their highest possible performance in campus selection. One of the most noticeable features of this school is that it has large classes, large and airy classrooms, libraries, and a clean and sanitary cafeteria, among other amenities. This college offers an opportunity for each and every student, despite their weaknesses or strengths, to live up to their potential.

Beautiful learning environment

The Memorial University of Newfoundland has provided me with a beautiful learning environment, pleasant staff, and excellent resources. There are many activities that you can participate in to gain more campus life experience along the way. You can join a club, meet new people, and so on. I am sure that you will develop, improve, and become a better person. The food options are great. Professors are concerned about their students' success and help them in whatever way they can. The communication between professor and student is completely helpful and they help you all the way towards your degree. On-campus, there is also a high level of safety. The student groups at the university are diverse and vibrant.
