Acquire the knowledge and skills needed for a career as an environmental health practitioner by analysing the five main intervention areas: housing, food safety, occupational health and safety, environmental protection and public health. You will develop your understanding of environmental stress factors and their effect on human health and safety, together with the legal and technical frameworks for controlling these risks.

The opportunity to interact with students from other vocational courses will broaden your perspective of environmental health issues, and you will have access to our state-of-the-art acoustics laboratory and our dedicated food inspection facilities to put your expertise into practice. You will also have the chance to engage in simulated sessions, including mock kitchen inspections and staged courtroom trials to see how the law operates in environmental health cases. These scenarios could help you work towards professional registration as an environmental health practitioner.

The role of acoustics in the built environment and the impact of sound and noise on society is a growing area of research and practice.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Understand acoustic design and practice as a vital component in environments where creative industries function
• Recognise the intrinsic relationship between audio systems and the environments in which they operate
• Develop a broad understanding of the behaviour of sound in all scenarios
• Build technical and practical skills in the measurement, evaluation and design of audio systems and acoustic environments
• Explore the areas of interfacing, interactivity and spatial audio
• Practise listening to audio systems and acoustic environments and develop your ability to complete their set up and evaluation independently

Study the interaction between human societies, the natural processes of the earth and their impact on the global and local environment.

As part of your course, you’ll:

• Complete a range of both human and physical geography modules, exploring topics such as natural hazard management, climate change, hydrology and environmental science

Develop key skills in economics, accounting and management with a strong vocational focus.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Explore the principles of economics and how they apply to business
• Gain both a theoretical and practical understanding of the economic decisions faced by business managers
• Develop the ability to analyse the economic and social environments in which those decisions are taken

If you take a paid work placement in your third year you’ll develop and enhance your employability skills. Past students have completed placements with companies including Mercedes Benz, Price Waterhouse Cooper and high street retail banks.

You will specialise in either contemporary literature or creative writing. Taught in workshops held on weekday evenings, you will be able to fit your studies around your existing commitments.

Contemporary Literature
Specialise in researching contemporary literature. You will be introduced to a range of recent literary texts in English and develop an advanced, critical understanding of recent debates on the contemporary creative process.

You will be encouraged by expert tutors to develop your skills in close reading, creating and delivering presentations and formal discussions. Modules will explore how contemporary literary studies is a creative process, and will enable you to specialise in topics at the cutting edge of the discipline.   

Your independent project will enable you to experience the process of defining your own area of investigation and conducting in-depth research and writing.

Creative Writing
Study creative writing at an advanced level. From the outset, you will focus on developing particular expertise in the writing process, and the texts and theories you study will enhance your writing practice.

From global events such as credit crunches to the closure of our favourite high street stores, explore the impact finance and the economy have on the world around you.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Develop valuable analytical skills in finance and economics that will prepare you for the workplace
• Discover how financial decisions made by individuals and businesses affect consumers, workers, industry, commerce and government
• Gain a thorough understanding of financial markets and the structure of business organisations

As part of this course you’ll:

• Explore criminological issues alongside a psychological focus
• Learn new ways of thinking about society while honing your understanding of people
• Engage with assumptions about the place of crime in society and our responses
• Gain an understanding of the causes and effects of crime and deviant behaviour through social research
• Use a range of psychological approaches to study human behaviour and thought to understand why people respond the way they do to crime 

Volunteering will enable you to develop your professional skills and add experience to your CV. Previous students have volunteered as learning support workers for the Leeds Youth Justice Board.

Develop the confidence and expertise to work in a range of professions across the children’s workforce.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Focus on the sociology and psychology of children and childhood in your classroom-based learning
• Pay attention to the importance of play for children’s wellbeing and development

You’ll have access to work-based learning opportunities with experienced supervisors in a range of child-focused occupations. Upon graduation you’ll have a range of practical and transferable skills at your fingertips, and a critical understanding of contemporary issues central to the study and practice of childhood development and playwork.

You’ll be guided by practising writers and researchers, undertaking modules that encourage an interdisciplinary approach to understanding writing and contemporary culture.

As part of your course, you'll:

• Develop strong communication and creative thinking skills by engaging with a diverse range of disciplines
• Receive a broad foundation in creative practice and cultural studies
• Inform and develop your own creative practice by exploring poetry and the short story in more depth
• Tailor your study to suit your career aspirations through a range of option modules
• Complete a dissertation-length project
• Produce an anthology in collaboration with your fellow students, developing your entrepreneurial skills

You’ll take an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on multiple areas of research and culture to inform your creative writing practice. With a particular focus on employability, the course offers a range of specialist modules that encourage you to reflect on your skillset.

• Examine core business principles including finance, communications, entrepreneurship and human resource management

You’ll be encouraged to undertake a work placement, and with our strong links to industry you'll be able to gain access to a number of major employers within Leeds, the region's centre for legal and financial services.
