Quantity surveyors are the cost managers of the construction industry. While studying for a recognised degree, you’ll learn how quantity surveyors organise, control and manage the costing of projects, including building economics, contracts and construction law, construction technology and project management.

As part of your course, you’ll:

• Undertake individual and group assessments and develop core skills
• Build analytical, arithmetic and IT abilities
• Develop as an innovative team player with the problem solving and transferable skills needed to succeed
• Gain the confidence and skills to tackle difficult contractual situations and negotiations

Sandwich year
Our sandwich route includes a one year industry placement, enabling you to take advantage of the strong links we have with local authorities, commercial organisations and private quantity surveying practices - all of whom provide placement opportunities for our students.

This integrated masters course provides the ideal platform to gain broad-based technical experience that will enable you to enter design, construction or operations roles within the civil engineering industry.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Build the foundations for a diverse and interesting future in civil engineering
• Develop knowledge of the mathematical and scientific principles and methodologies which underpin civil engineering
• Apply your knowledge to real-world problems
• Learn to produce innovative solutions using technical literature and industry codes of standard
• Practice using investigation and evaluation of design-related engineering issues
• Gain detailed knowledge and technical proficiency in health and safety, sustainable, environmental and economic development, and the frameworks in which they operate
• Equip yourself with the problem-solving skills to work on projects such as designing large structures and infrastructure including roads, water supply and drainage, bridges, airports, tunnels, and sea and flood defences

 You’ll learn using a variety of tools, including case studies and design-based exercises that will enable you to develop applied skills, participate in critical analysis and practise your presentation skills.

Accredited IEng (Full)
This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation on behalf of the Engineering Council as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

The course team will help you secure work placements during the summer and your sandwich year, if you choose to take one. A placement or sandwich year will provide you with a great opportunity to gain practical experience in the workplace, which will help you apply for jobs when you graduate.

We will provide you with an advanced and challenging study of the main management disciplines of finance, marketing, supply chain and human resources. You will apply modern business and management techniques to an organisation's problems in the context of the wider business world and global community.

This is your opportunity to improve your personal and interpersonal competencies, intellectual skills and self-motivation through problem-solving, mutual support, participative personal development planning and reflective learning.

This course provides an opportunity for graduates with a non-business degree background to gain knowledge of management principles and practice. It is also recommended if you are a graduate with a business or management degree seeking to achieve a management-based masters.

You’ll be offered unique opportunities to gain work experience with the media, cultural and creative industries in Leeds, such as museums, art galleries, theatres, film production companies and recording studios that surround the city centre campus. You may also get involved in many regional events; for example, the Harrogate Film Festival, the Ilkley Literature Festival or the Leeds West Indian Carnival.

Take your passion for audio to the next level with this JAMES accredited course.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Understand the physical nature and behaviour of sound and use this to benefit audio production and performance
• Analyse how audio systems work
• Study a blend of engineering, acoustics, programming and electronics
• Apply your skills and knowledge to acoustic issues and technical requirements you’ll face in industry
• Learn to record live sound, digital broadcasts, studio and location sound and audio-visual applications
• Work across a variety of environments including live music events, studio sound and sound reproduction systems

You’ll practise using your knowledge to find solutions to audio engineering problems. For example, you’ll learn how to predict and reduce the acoustic impact of rail lines on nearby homes, and how to design a public address system to deliver a speech to thousands of listeners.
