Communications and Journalism (Major)
In choosing to specialise in communication & journalism for your Bachelor of Media at UNSW, you’ll be armed with the knowledge, skills, and experience you need to make your mark in journalism. Study and explore the different crucial developments, contexts, and practices of the media and communications industries—which will allow you to build a strong critical and practical understanding of the evolving communications landscape in relation to diverse contexts. This double degree combines specialised knowledge in Engineering with the variety of possibilities available in an Arts degree. Computational design
This specialisation takes a different approach – resolving design challenges with cutting-edge technologies. Using various computer languages, you’ll encode decisions and test ideas spanning architecture, design, computer science and engineering.

Learning in studio-based classes, you’ll develop unique and in-demand skills, including 3D modelling, digital geometry, parametric design, responsive environments, and form-making. Become familiar with robotic and digital fabrication using 3D printers and laser cutters or Augmented Reality (AR) / Virtual Reality (VR) headsets to design for the metaverse.

Bring your designs to life through problem-solving, theoretical knowledge and practical techniques combined with creative and critical thinking. Computer Science is the study of the design, construction and use of computer systems. When you complete a Bachelor of Computer Science at UNSW, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge required for computer applications to be developed.

Working with both hardware and software, this undergraduate degree teaches the basic principles behind computing tools, operating systems, compilers and translators, and computer hardware.

The Bachelor of Computer Science also focuses on the representation of data and data structures in computer systems and the design of algorithms for automatic manipulation of this information by programming languages and machine systems.

Cinema Studies (Major)
Specialising in cinema studies as part of your Bachelor of Media at UNSW will equip you with the theoretical, historical, and cultural frameworks to understand how and why moving image cultures continue to shape global media industries.

The Master of Engineering Science (Transport Engineering) is designed to develop skills in modelling and analysing transport systems, both passenger and freight.

You will gain deep knowledge in the planning, functional design, operation and management of transport infrastructure, with a focus on its economic and environmental impact.

The program will provide you with advanced study options including transport planning, ITS and land use and risk management and safety, through to network design, demand estimation and sustainability, emissions and health.

It aims to meet the real-world need for safe, quick, reliable and efficient transport systems that are becoming ever more important due to global population growth and urban sprawl.

The typical two-year program, sitting within the UNSW School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, comprises open-ended enquiry-based projects as well as many other opportunities to help you become a leader in the field.

Computational Design (Major)

When you study Computational Design at UNSW, you’ll learn to approach challenges differently through design-thinking. You’ll gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, including 3D modelling, digital geometry and parametric design, responsive environments, AR and VR, and robotic and digital fabrication using 3D printers and laser cutters.

Through design thinking and computational design theory, you’ll hone critical-thinking and communication skills to create inclusive designs for diverse contexts. As part of our supportive Arts, Design & Architecture community, you’ll be encouraged to collaborate across disciplines, gain professional experience, and take advantage of programs that support entrepreneurship and innovation. You’ll have the opportunity to work on real-life projects set by UNSW’s partners in the built-environment, architecture and design industries such as Cox, Arup, Hassell, BVN, Bates Smart, PTW Architects, Grimshaw, Mott McDonald, and Aurecon.
