Gender and Women's Studies gives students an opportunity to explore gender issues in an interdisciplinary context, and it offers a useful complement to other fields. The required courses provide a framework for understanding the gender-based aspects of knowledge, power, and society.

Gender and Women's Studies represents a new approach to knowledge; it examines the gender-based aspects of human experience and women's roles in society. Gender and Women's Studies includes a wide variety of academic disciplines and professions.

Bachelor of Arts
The Gender and Women's Studies program is available as a major, double major or honours option as part of a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree. Courses in the Faculty of Arts cover a broad range of subject areas concerned with the study of human beings and the evolution and nature of global societies, ideas, and institutions. In your first two years of the program, you will select courses in fields like humanities, languages, social sciences as well as science and business to provide you with a broad foundation for advanced study in your chosen subject area during the final two years.

How does the brain work? How does the brain determine behavior? What happens when the brain is injured? Neuroscience is a sub-field of psychology that examines these questions and many others. 

Research in neuroscience is one of the fastest growing areas of psychology.  We now have new techniques to measure brain activity, such as neuroimaging, which gives us insight into the brain we’ve never had before. When you enroll in the Neuroscience specialization at UNB, you will stay at the cutting edge of psychology. 

The Neuroscience specialization is available as part of your major or honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. You can also get training in Neuroscience through the major or honours Bachelor of Science degree.

The mysteries of number theory and the geometry of curved spaces: these are areas with important applications in data security, computer design and cosmology. For ages, through research both pure and applied, mathematicians have made invisible and unsung contributions to advancements in science and technology, and the importance of mathematical training is increasingly recognized by employers and governments around the world.

In numerous rankings of careers, a significant portion of the top careers are math-intensive, and a degree in Mathematics provides excellent training.  For instance, CareerCast annually ranks 200 careers according to environment, income, outlook, and stress, and Mathematician, Actuary, Statistician, Data Scientist, Information Security Analyst, and Computer Systems Analyst regularly rank in the top ten.

Two Options

Mathematics:The mathematics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry, government or education. Mathematics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of application such as the physical sciences, computer science, engineering or business.

Statistics: The statistics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry or government as well as to provide a background for graduate study. Statistics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of applications such as the physical sciences, forestry, or computer science.

Software engineering goes beyond programming.  It’s about developing, writing, testing, implementing, and maintaining software systems. It’s the foundation of all computer systems. In other words, our digital world depends on software engineering.

In UNB’s Software Engineering program, you’ll learn how to develop and maintain reliable, safe, affordable, and efficient software systems that satisfy customer requirements. You’ll also gain the skills and knowledge needed to work on large and expensive software systems that often have safety-critical applications.  

Software Engineering is a joint program in the Faculty of Computer Science and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The program is available as a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.

Our program is the only Software Engineering program in Atlantic Canada accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), and one of only 14 CEAB-accredited programs in Canada. Travel back in time to ancient Greece and Rome by studying how art, architecture, mythology, history, science, philosophy, and the language of the time have shaped what we now understand as our modern Western world. Using literature and archeology as your guides, you’ll learn about ancient civilizations in a fresh and compelling way.

Why Classics at UNB?
At UNB, we offer two approaches to the study of classical antiquity. For students intending to pursue the study of ancient Greece and Rome at a graduate level, we offer a program focusing on ancient Greek and Latin languages, and a critical knowledge of the works of ancient authors in their original languages.

For students planning to enter professional roles after the BA, we offer a program of humanities courses, which includes: history, mythology, philosophy, and art history. In either stream, students are invited to enroll in courses in archaeology.

The Faculty of Engineering offers a program leading to a Diploma in Technology Management and Entrepreneurship, administered by the Dr. J. Herbert Smith/ACOA Chair. The mission of the program is to provide undergraduate and continuing education students opportunities to experience the realities of entrepreneurship and management in technology-based businesses and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in business. The Diploma program consists of three core courses and two electives, totalling 15 credit hours. In selecting courses, students will be advised to develop a curriculum that builds skills in three key areas: business management, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.

Up to twelve credit hours of required courses for the TME diploma can be shared as credit towards a degree. Each department shall determine its own maximum allowable concurrent credit hours, which may be less than, but no greater than twelve credit hours. Students who intend to complete the diploma must obtain both department and TME program approval of the courses which will be applied towards the degree and the diploma.

Applicants are encouraged to apply to the program as early as their first year of study and begin by taking elective courses. A minimum of 80 credit hours completed, or permission of the TME program Chair, is required to enroll in TME core courses.  Applicants who are not full-time students may still apply for the TME Diploma (or enroll in one or more TME courses). These applicants may be requested to submit the following documents along with their TME Diploma Application:

It is not the policy of the Science Faculty to set out rigid pre-professional programs. Each professional school has its own entrance requirements and it is necessary that the student ascertain these requirements in order to be sure of qualifying as a candidate for admission to that particular school. UNB does offer the courses necessary to qualify a student for entrance into professional programs.

Experience has shown that, where possible, it is highly desirable for the pre-professional student to obtain a bachelor’s degree before applying for entrance to the professional school.

Students interested in meeting the entrance requirements for any professional program should meet with an assistant dean for advice before selecting their courses.

Through UNB’s History program, you’ll learn that everything we know, do, and sense comes from our interpretation of the past – and interpreting it well is essential to shaping our future. You’ll also learn that History is as diverse as humanity itself – past and present – and grows with every moment.  Studying History will help you understand how and why change happens.

Mechanical engineers solve problems. They focus on making the world a better place by creating efficient, safe, and environmentally sound components and systems.

In UNB’s Mechanical Engineering program, you’ll learn to analyze, design, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. You’ll gain the skills you need to create and build mechanical devices such as spacecraft and artificial limbs, to design automation, medical tools, robotics, and ventilation systems, and to redesign existing mechanical systems and components to be more affordable and environmentally sound. 

Mechanical Engineering is available as a major in the Bachelor of Science in Engineering program.

Why Mechanical Engineering at UNB?
Many of New Brunswick’s successful mechanical engineers have graduated from UNB’s Mechanical Engineering program. That’s because the program offers exciting and diverse program options, including Biomedical Engineering and Mechatronics.

General Information:-

Students can choose between two programs: German and German Studies. "German" is the language stream and "German Studies" is the area studies. The Undergraduate Advisor of the German unit will assist students interested in German/German Studies to select the program best suited for them. 

GERMAN:-
The focus of this program is language acquisition, even though students will also take content courses offered in English. It is suited for students who are eager to express themselves in German and who enjoy learning languages. 

GERMAN STUDIES:-
The focus of this program is on a wide variety of perspectives related to all things German, even though students will take two introductory German courses to get elementary exposure to the German language.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

Minor in German
Students wishing to Minor in German are required to successfully complete GER 1001, GER 1002, GER 2001, GER 2002, plus four other German courses (12 ch) at the third or fourth-year levels in German language, literature, culture or film, offered in the Department. Courses cross-listed must be taken as German credits. Students in Minors must obtain a grade of C or higher in all required German courses.

Major in German
Students majoring in German (single or double majors), are required to complete GER 3011 and GER 3022, plus 6 other courses (18ch), at the third-or fourth-year levels in German language, literature, culture or film, offered in the Department. Courses cross-listed must be taken as German credits. The total of required courses is 24 advanced-level ch in German. Students in Majors must obtain a grade of C or higher in all required German courses.

Honours and Joint Honours in German:-
Honours students must obtain a grade of B- or higher in all required German courses. 

A. Single Honours 

Students in Single Honours are required to complete GER 3011 and GER 3022, plus 10 other courses (30ch) at the third-or fourth year levels in German language, literature, culture or film, offered in Department. Courses cross-listed must be taken as German credits. The total of required courses is 36 advanced level ch in German.

B. Joint Honours

Students in joint honours are required to complete GER 3011 and GER 3022, plus 6 other courses (24ch) at the third- or fourth years level in German language, literature, culture or film, offered in the Department. Courses cross-listed must be taken as German credits. The total of required courses is 24 advanced-level ch in German.

Note: Students majoring or honouring in German are strongly encouraged to spend one academic year at a university in a German-speaking country, for example in the program "Canadian Year in Freiburg" preferably in their third or fourth year of study. Interested students should consult the undergraduate advisor for German before November 30 of the year prior to the time of departure.
