Within the creative and media industries, small groups of people with strong individual talent often evolve into innovative companies. On this course, you will develop your own area of expertise and hone your ability to work creatively with like-minded professionals.

Option modules and the flexible nature of this course will enable you to develop a broad overview of creative technology while also specialising in an area of your choice. You might choose to investigate emerging 3D computer animation techniques, work on post-production special visual effects or explore innovative photographic visual effects technologies.

You will develop your specialist skills and knowledge of digital technology through the use of digital tools in our inspiring learning environments, which include a chroma-key and motion capture studio and a suite of high-quality professional music studios. These facilities combined with regular visiting speakers from the music and film industries and a range of links with local and national music, arts and festival organisations and also animation, games and visual effects companies, will ensure you get the most from your course.

We have excellent equipment and resources including a motion capture studio, a suite of high quality professional music studios and a highly experienced and skilled teaching team. This, combined with regular visiting speakers from the music and film industries and a range of links with local and national music, arts, and festival organisations, plus animation, games and visual effects companies, ensures that you get the most from your course.

You will specialise in either contemporary literature or creative writing. Taught in workshops held on weekday evenings, you will be able to fit your studies around your existing commitments.

Contemporary Literature
Specialise in researching contemporary literature. You will be introduced to a range of recent literary texts in English and develop an advanced, critical understanding of recent debates on the contemporary creative process.

You will be encouraged by expert tutors to develop your skills in close reading, creating and delivering presentations and formal discussions. Modules will explore how contemporary literary studies is a creative process, and will enable you to specialise in topics at the cutting edge of the discipline.   

Your independent project will enable you to experience the process of defining your own area of investigation and conducting in-depth research and writing.

Creative Writing
Study creative writing at an advanced level. From the outset, you will focus on developing particular expertise in the writing process, and the texts and theories you study will enhance your writing practice.

Develop the power of your storytelling through confident employment of creative and technical filmmaking skills in drama, documentary and experimental film production.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Study theory to develop your creative practice and be guided by industry experienced tutors in all aspects of film production
• Explore a range of filmmaking disciplines, including directing for drama, experimental film and documentary, together with producing, cinematography, screenwriting, design, editing and post-production, and location and post-production sound
• Learn who your audience is and how to engage them
• Explore the responsibilities of your practice, discovering your voice and developing that as a filmmaker

All of our tutors are film practitioners, so you’ll benefit from a wide range of professional production experience. The teaching team has a wealth of expertise in drama, documentary and experimental filmmaking, with specialist knowledge in screenwriting, postproduction, sound, producing, directing and cinematography.

Build upon your practical and theoretical experience of contemporary music production and apply a range of creative production approaches in industry-standard studio facilities. This course will help you to develop the skills and knowledge to take your production ambitions further, nurture your confidence to work within the music and media industries, and prepare you for further study.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Learn from internationally-recognised researchers and experienced industry professionals
• Explore the technical and creative aspects of recording, arranging, mixing and producing
• Produce a wide range of commercial and non-commercial musical projects
• Critically analyse the productions of others in a variety of contexts
• Work with peers and collaborate with other artists and producers

Develop the skills you will need to work in the expanding and diverse modern professional audio and music industries.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Explore the technologies and techniques used in the recording, production and reproduction of sound and music
• Fuel your creativity while expanding your theoretical knowledge
• Access industry-standard facilities, including our impressive recording studios, post-production rooms and portable recording and audio analysis devices
• Have the option to work with external clients in your final year

This course is accredited by JAMES (Joint Audio Media Education Support) which encourages the delivery of workshops and lectures from industry professionals. A placement option and your final year project will provide you with opportunities to work with industry partners.

Hands-on learning
You’ll be taught in our state-of-the art science laboratories and acoustic facilities. This hands-on approach will allow greater interaction with your lecturers and will enhance your learning.

With a focus on sound design for film and television, this course will allow you to explore the capture of on-location production sound and studio-based post-production activity.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Create soundtracks for live action film and animation for a variety of platforms and contexts
• Engage with film and sound studies theory
• Develop technical and practical skills in the area of composition and post-production
• Collaborate and negotiate with fellow music students as well as with peers in the wider school including film, dance and performance
• Have the opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge to sound production for radio and podcasting

Explore contemporary dance and take part in exciting collaborative performance projects.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Work with choreographers, independent dance artists and directors
• Learn how to perform, direct, organise and teach, developing your skills in all areas of contemporary dance production
• Be taught by practising artists who will advise you on producing and performing work
• Be based in Leeds, a hub of cultural activity and home to Northern Ballet, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Yorkshire Dance National Dance Agency, Leeds Playhouse, The Riley Theatre and The Carriageworks
• Study in a city that hosts regular performance events like Light Night, Leeds Festival and Leeds Carnival, the UK's second largest Carribean Carnival

You’ll learn from a teaching team interested in working with students from a variety of dance backgrounds and they will encourage you to develop your creativity.

This course has exceptional industry links with local and international organisations and you will benefit from being taught in specialist studios and theatre spaces. You will be able to take advantage of opportunities at local, national and international level, using our links to give you access to recognised artists working in contemporary practices. Regular networking and work experience throughout the course will give you the confidence to take on exciting projects and approach people inside and outside the industry.

In your third year you’ll be able to choose a placement that appeals to you. You could help run a festival, shadow a choreographer, take part in a teaching residency, or do something else that is of interest to you.

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession which involves working with people to improve their own health and wellbeing. Learn to use physical approaches to promote, maintain and restore physical function on this Chartered Society of Physiotherapy approved programme.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Develop collaborative working skills, putting them into practice working with patients, their carers and other health professionals
• Be encouraged to reflect on practice to aid your professional development
• Experience placements within a variety of health and social care settings. These could include sports clubs, schools and private clinics in specialist areas such as cardio vascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, neurology and paediatrics
