Our BA Politics & International Relations and Philosophy degree allows you to explore the ethical and philosophical questions that help to shape and challenge national and international politics and political agendas.

Here at Hertfordshire, as well as learning about philosophical and political theory, you’ll be doing rigorous and creative thinking of your own. Our internationally regarded academics will help you learn to address the arguments of others, to understand and engage with them so that you can arrive at your own conclusions and create your own original work.

You will also explore topical practical questions. Issues that arise as a result of increasing political focus on different dimensions of security, for example, are raised in the modules ‘Terrorism and Security’ and ‘The State in the 21st Century’. Key social issues, such as, gender equality will be addressed from the perspective of both disciplines in ‘The Politics of Gender’ and in ‘Feminist Philosophy’. This course follows a similar path to our geography degree, but after the First Year focuses more on the processes and landforms of the natural environment whilst also looking at human impacts on these. Fieldwork learning, and practical application are at the heart of this course, and you'll develop skills using our own field station, specialist laboratories and geographical information analysis facilities. You will go on two fully-funded field trips in the UK and Switzerland to learn more about the challenges of living in mountainous environments and climate change. Specialist modules include earth surface processes and landforms, quaternary environmental change, glaciology, and natural hazards and disaster reduction. Areas of optional study include conservation and food supplies, environmental problem solving, leisure and tourism, and digital information and location intelligence. Depending on how your interests evolve, you'll have a chance to switch between the different geography courses.

This programme will be for you if you would like to become a graduate practitioner in the early childhood sector or if you have an interest in working with children and families. The programme focuses on young children’s education, development and care from conception to the age of 7 years. Students will have the opportunity to become confident, self-aware, reflective graduates able to operate as professionals in multi-agency contexts. The programme content draws on international research and practice, including global perspectives of children, different early childhood curricula and established, as well as emerging, theory.

You will learn from lecturers with many years of experience in early childhood settings and related professions including; primary teaching, nursing, health visiting and children’s centre management.

The programme makes strong links between theory and practice through a placement in an early childhood setting in Year 2. The placement is a result of ongoing consultation with employers and students. It will enable you to graduate with valuable work related skills and experience.

Early Childhood Education graduates are well placed to seek employment as professionals in early childhood settings. They will also have transferrable skills applicable to a variety of careers related to working with children and families.

Transferrable skills:
Research skills will be embedded throughout the program, and you will investigate an issue of your choice related to early childhood education in a research project.
As well as knowledge gained throughout the program, students will develop critical thinking and other transferable skills which can enhance their employability.

Tailor your studies to suit you:
The course can be studied both full and part time, making it suitable for students who have recently completed A levels, as well as early childhood practitioners who are already in employment and wish to enhance their level of qualification.

Our BA Politics & International Relations and Journalism degree gives you the opportunity to study current challenges in national and international politics while developing a range of journalistic skills that will help you understand how key events are communicated in our so-called ‘post-truth’ era of fake news and alternative facts.

This degree focuses particularly on the interactions between media distribution and political governance while also giving students the opportunity to study both subjects in their breadth and diversity. We will ensure that your studies enhance knowledge, understanding and academic confidence and deliver strong transferrable and professional skills for a career, not limited to, but particularly in media, publishing and public relations.

During your studies you will explore topical practical and theoretical questions. You might explore issues which arise as a result of increasing political focus on different dimensions of security and its governance, for example in the modules ‘Security & Governance’, ‘Terrorism and Security’ or ‘The State in the 21st Century’. Journalism modules complement this by giving you the opportunity to consider how changing political conditions impact  in areas of media production from news to features and online journalism. A module entitled ‘Journalism, Law and Ethics’ explores why we need an understanding of the regulatory framework to work as a journalist.

You will be taught by experts who work at the cutting edge of their research disciplines. Our journalism team are highly experienced practitioners who will help you develop the skills to produce work in different styles and for diverse markets.

Your learning experience will include subject-specific methods such as producing news items and features for a target readership and a variety of transferrable skills built through both subject areas, such as, structured argumentation and strong oral and written

You will be able to undertake a placement or study abroad year to gain professional experience or increase global awareness to build skills relevant to your studies in Politics and International Relations or Journalism.
