As part of your course you’ll:

• Develop concepts and narratives through drawing, sequential illustration and animation, digital practices, three-dimensional forms, performance and creative writing
• Underpin these practices with an emphasis on drawing and image-making
• Challenge the conventions of the discipline of illustration
• Define and locate your own practice within the professional context of illustration
• Investigate established unfamiliar and emerging processes, to inform your own individual methodologies

You’ll learn from experienced lecturers who practice and research in diverse industry fields with the knowledge and skills to support multidisciplinary explorations.

You’ll develop your ability to communicate and contribute to a team project by working with students studying different disciplines. This will simulate the working environment and enable you to practise collaborating on projects and briefs, a skill you’ll need in the workplace whether you choose to join an agency, studio or work as freelance. 

The world of cinema increasingly offers opportunities for study outside of filmmaking itself. This innovative programme offers the opportunity to gain both the vital skills and critical awareness necessary to pursue a career in the diverse areas of contemporary film curation and exhibition, whether within the industry or within the field of research. This could include curation within a museum or arts centre; festival management; exhibition and distribution both theatrical and online; or cinema programming.

A range of placements with industry partners including The Tetley, a leading centre for contemporary art housed in the former Tetley brewery, and Leeds International Film Festival, will allow you to see this in action, providing you with the practical skills you need to successfully curate and exhibit films.

Classroom-based modules will explain the theory behind programming, archiving and film exhibition using case studies including cinemas, art galleries and festivals amongst others.

Working closely with industry professionals, you will be encouraged to experiment with new ideas and you will learn to identify opportunities and risks in order to develop a viable business venture or project.

Studying professional interactions, you will learn that strong communication and relationship development skills coupled with a solid emotional intelligence base are key to managing and sustaining complex business partnerships.

You will learn from a highly skilled and research-active teaching team who are experts in enterprise, innovation, entrepreneurship, marketing and management. You will also work with a professional mentor - a business practitioner who can provide practical support and advice during your period of study.

With guidance from your mentor, you will have the opportunity to work on a real-life enterprise or start-up project and implement solutions, make decisions and manage the process from start to finish.

Accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), this course allows you to study a range of contemporary themes within human geography, including globalisation, sustainability, identity and the diversity of human living.

As part of your course, you’ll:

• Learn about the role that planning plays in helping to shape our cities and towns and make them better places for us to live
• Engage with live projects through a wide range of field trips, from half-day site visits in Leeds to week-long field trips further afield, giving you the opportunity to apply your classroom learning in the real world

• Gain a solid academic and practical base from which to develop your craft further
• Apply your knowledge to a variety of creative and industry-focused briefs and scenarios

• Have the opportunity to work with other students in production teams, further enhancing your team working and project management abilities and employability opportunities

You’ll have access to software such as Logic Pro, Cubase, Adobe Audition, MAX MSP and Synthmaker. Your specialist modules might require you to use Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Unreal and other industry standard software.

This course is accredited by JAMES (Joint Audio Media Education Support) which encourages the delivery of workshops and lectures from industry professionals. A placement option and your final year project will provide you with opportunities to work with industry partners.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Develop the range of skills you’ll need to be able to undertake construction management positions
• Study the legal, financial and economic environments in which the industry operates
• Understand the other professions involved in building
• Gain an overview of the whole construction process, including surveying, quantity surveying and architectural technology
• Learn to use commercial awareness and professional managerial knowledge in managing contracts within specified quality, cost and schedule boundaries
• Understand responsibilities associated with managing site operations, including those concerning the commissioners of a development, direct employees, subcontractors, the public and agents of regulatory and other authorities

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Explore a wide range of theories within psychology, mental health, counselling, child development and psychotherapy
• Combine theoretical knowledge with opportunities to work in mental health environments and develop your ability to build effective therapeutic relationships
• Study a variety of therapeutic approaches  
• Explore psychotherapeutic models including cognitive and behavioural development and look at theories on how mental health issues develop across the lifespan
• Learn how to develop your interpersonal skills in order to build counselling relationships between you and your clients 

This course is suitable for those working in mental health services wanting to further their knowledge and career, or for those wishing to enter the health and care professions. You’ll study a variety of therapeutic approaches and will be able to tailor the course to your career ambitions. On completion, you’ll be able to build positive therapeutic relationships that can foster positive change for your clients, for example with people experiencing anxiety, depression and addiction.

Artist in Residence Programme
