Saint Louis University’s Master of Arts in English provides students with scholarly training in a variety of literary fields and in the study of rhetoric and composition.

Students in our program receive training in pedagogy, research, writing and theory. The M.A. is a prerequisite for our Ph.D. program, and it also prepares students for careers in fields including publishing, editing, and secondary education. SLU's English M.A. program is also offered at Saint Louis University's Madrid campus.

Saint Louis University’s M.A. program in American studies gives students a solid grounding in the origins, development, practices and theoretical framework of the field, as well as aiding them in the pursuit of independent research and academic writing.
Saint Louis University's award-winning American studies faculty are trained specifically in the discipline. Most have earned their Ph.D.s in American studies; all have worked extensively in the field as scholars and teachers. Our time and effort as teaching faculty are focused on American studies students. At the same time, we enjoy productive and cordial relations with our colleagues in other departments who teach and conduct research in related fields, and students may take carefully selected courses in those departments, as students in other departments do in American studies.

Saint Louis University's Department of Women’s and Gender Studies is open to people of all genders, with courses focusing on women, gender and sexuality across the curriculum of the humanities and social sciences and including professional schools such as nursing, law and social work.
Women’s and gender studies is the study of the human experience that places women and gender at the center of the analysis. It is an interdisciplinary field that draws from knowledge and expertise in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. It examines how gender inequality is built into social institutions and practices, envisions more egalitarian alternatives, and studies strategies of social change.

A Bachelor of Science in chemistry provides excellent preparation for students seeking employment in industry (chemical, pharmaceutical, agriculture, etc.) or the government (Department of Defense labs, regulatory agencies, law enforcement), as well as for those wishing to continue their studies in professional school (medical, dental, veterinary, law, etc.) and graduate school.

Bioethics and Health Studies
Bioethics is a field that analyzes the ethical questions raised by advances in medical and scientific technology. It examines these questions both in the clinical context and in health policy. Well-known bioethical topics include abortion, euthanasia and stem cell research. But the field’s area of study has grown dramatically in recent decades in keeping with the rapid pace of biotechnological advances. More recent bioethical work addresses developments in genetics, neuroscience, public health and various emerging fields in the biomedical sciences.

Social Work
A degree in social work gives students the skills to improve the quality of life for individuals or communities faced with difficulties such as poverty, serious illness or disability.

Saint Louis University's Department of Theological Studies trains students in a variety of sources and methods to help them evaluate and appreciate the most vital aspects of religious experience and thought. The department enters into this investigation from an academic perspective with the aim of helping students clarify their own understanding.
The Catholic tradition is central to the work of the department, but Catholicism is studied in the context of the whole Christian tradition and in relationship to all of the world’s religious traditions.

Saint Louis University's Master of Arts (M.A.) degree program in French offers a diverse curriculum in French language, cultures and literatures, including Francophone studies, film and gender studies. 

The master's French program is designed to suit the needs of those planning or already engaged in professional careers such as teaching or international affairs. At the same time, SLU's French M.A. program provides excellent preparation for studies in French beyond the master’s degree.

Opportunities for student development include participation in the annual SLU Graduate Student Symposium and the annual departmental Undergraduate and Graduate Symposium. Students also have the option to study abroad in a French-speaking country during a summer, in an approved program, for up to six transfer credits.

Due to the emphasis on problem-solving skills, computer science is an excellent major for students going into many fields, including technology, business, medicine and law.

Chemistry
Saint Louis University's Master of Arts in Chemistry offers specialization in analytical, inorganic, organic, physical or biological chemistry, with cross-disciplinary activity encouraged. Our Department of Chemistry offers master's students close mentoring relationships, small research groups and opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary research.
