The Bachelor of Medical Science aims to develop your skills to apply knowledge of Clinical Measurement, Nutrition or Pathology to clinical practice in a health professional role, or Biotechnology in support industries and medical research.

The course is designed to build a high level of technical and evaluative skill so you can assess and implement recommendations for best practice in patient testing, monitoring, education or to develop therapeutics in the cutting-edge medical biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry. The course also aims to develop high level communication skills so that you can interact positively with patients/clients, other health professionals or industry leaders and are ready for the clinical or scientific work environment.

Clinical decision making and problem solving ability will be promoted through opportunities such as developing skills in designing, conducting and interpreting medical research.

Biotechnology

The biotechnology specialisation will explore the ways in which living things and their molecular constituents are used as tools. With an emphasis on medical applications, you will be ideally placed to pursue a career in the BioPharma industry and medical diagnostics. Please note this major is only available at our Rockhampton campus.

During your course, you will gain advanced theoretical and technical knowledge in the clinical disciplines of laboratory medicine for application in the diagnostic setting. You will build technical and evaluative skills through laboratory and clinical training to assess and implement recommendations for best practice in patient testing and monitoring. This course will enable you to develop an advanced level of communication skill to interact positively with patients and other health professionals ready for the clinical or scientific work environment.

Clinical decision-making and problem-solving abilities are key skills for medical laboratory scientists. You will develop clinical decision-making and problem solving skills through experience in professional practice, clinical case studies and research opportunities. This course features two professional practice units requiring you to complete a total of 560 hours of placement.

Students who are not eligible for advanced standing will be able to refine their laboratory skills by attending a residential school block at our Rockhampton campus, in which travel and accommodation costs are provided for students that are admitted to the Melbourne campus.

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) at CQUniversity is a four-year course designed to develop your skills and enable you to practise as a Physiotherapist.

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession concerned with human function and movement. Physiotherapists use a range of methods in their work including exercise, manual techniques, education and advice.

The Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Sciences will equip you with practical skills in the various disciplines relevant to exercise and sport sciences such as anatomy and physiology, nutrition, exercise physiology, biomechanics, exercise and sport psychology, motor control and learning, and exercise prescription and delivery.

You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the processes and mechanisms of the human body as they relate to exercise and sport science and have the flexibility to pursue an area of interest, with your choice of Minor. The course delivers the right mix of skills-based training and research-led teaching to succeed in today’s agribusiness, livestock and cropping industries. Thanks to our partnership with local industry, such as Victoria’s Rural Industries Skills Training (RIST), you’ll benefit from project-based training on extensive crop, dairy, sheep, equine and beef production facilities. Graduates from RIST can apply for direct entry into the Bachelor of Agriculture.

The first year of the Bachelor of Agriculture will provide the foundation framework that you will use to develop increasingly complex learnings developed in the context of industry-relevant problems. In the second year, you will build your core skills by developing your systematic thinking by learning about emerging agricultural innovation through an industry placement. You will select to complete either a major in agribusiness or two out of three minors in livestock, cropping or business, during the course. Completing the Bachelor of Oral Health at CQUniversity enables you to apply to the Dental Board of Australia for registration as an Oral Health Therapist.

Designed to equip you with a broad skill set, the course ensures you graduate work-ready. Occupational therapy is a dynamic person-centred health profession. Practitioners support people of all ages, and their families, to engage in the occupations and activities of daily life, to optimise physical and mental health and wellbeing. Occupational therapists must be registered to practice in Australia, and may work in a range of government, educational, and industry settings, as well as in private enterprise, throughout the world.

The aim of our accredited Occupational Therapy Course is to develop highly competent and autonomous occupational therapy graduates, skilled in inter-professional and person-/family-centred occupational therapy practice. To achieve this, the course is informed by contemporary research and occupational therapy theories and models. It is taught by occupational therapists and other suitably qualified professionals who are skilled and experienced in the diverse areas of occupational therapy practice. Although it addresses local, national, and global community needs, a particular emphasis is on training graduates to work in rural and regional communities. The occupational therapy course aligns seamlessly with CQUniversity's focus on social innovation and status as Australia’s first Ashoka U Changemaker Campus.

Your education and training will include recognising aspects relevant to the person, the environment, and occupations that represent strengths and barriers to occupational engagement; and addressing these to support people to achieve their goals. You will engage in a minimum of 1000 hours of clinical practice, including full-time placements, for which you will need to meet a number of prerequisite requirements. In your final year, you will further develop your skills by planning and implementing a small community-based research or evaluation project enabling you to graduate work-ready.

The Master of Engineering allows you the opportunity to develop professional skills such as teamwork and communication while applying and further developing the theoretical knowledge you gained in your undergraduate study. If you are a practicing engineer, this is a versatile course that allows you to extend or expand your engineering practice.  

This course begins with an introduction to Australian engineering practice, providing the opportunity to apply discipline knowledge and skills in an authentic project, in some cases with an industry mentor, and will help to prepare you for engineering practice. You will then complete an internship of a minimum of 300 hours to gain work experience required to meet the accreditation requirements of the course. If you have significant and recent engineering experience (at least 480 hours) you may opt out of this unit and choose an elective unit as an alternative.

Depending on your choice of elective units, you will study one or two units from topics including sustainability, mining, project management and rail providing the opportunity to contextualise your learning to your current or preferred industry. Finally, you will complete a major research project that will demonstrate your ability to work as a professional engineer.

Clinical Measurement

Clinical Measurement involves diagnosing disease and fine-tuning therapeutic management of already established disease by performing physiological tests such as electrocardiography (ECG) and 24-hour halter monitoring. Upon completion of the Clinical Measurement specialisation, you will be ready to pursue a role as a Medical Scientist in clinical measurement laboratories. Medical Scientists form a vital link in the chain of medical services and assess the physiological functioning of the cardiovascular, nervous and respiratory systems.
