Biomedical science courses allow you to understand how the human body functions, and the responses of the body to various diseases, exercise, diet, internal disturbances, and environmental influences.

You’ll learn how techniques in molecular biology and genetics are applied to diagnosing genes that cause cancer, making crops and livestock less vulnerable to disease, and making food safer.

You’ll complete studies in cell biology, physiology, microbiology and molecular biology. You can also choose to study anatomy, neuroscience, cardiovascular biology, industrial microbiology, proteomics, pharmaceutical sciences and applied biochemistry.

You'll examine how such disorders affect biomechanics, the nervous system and health in general. The focus is on manual treatments such as spinal adjustments and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation.

Anatomy, physiology and pathology courses underpin the clinical science studies of physical examination, differential diagnosis for the chiropractor and clinical practicum.

You will begin work-integrated learning immediately, culminating in your fourth year when you will perform patient-care duties with supervision from a registered practitioner.

At the RMIT Health Clinic at University Hill, Bundoora, fourth and fifth year students, under the supervision of registered chiropractors, treat patients using a wide variety of management approaches.

RMIT's clinical and experiential research projects contribute to the growth and development of food sciences in Australia.

Under expert supervision, you will join researchers already active in:

• Application of nanotechnology to food products
• Bioprocessing
• Biosensors, food microbiology and safety
• Encapsulation of micronutrients, enzymes, probiotics and essential fatty acids
• Food, nutrition and health (nutrigenomics, proteomics, metabolomics, nutritional immunology)
• Emerging technologies for improving cheese flavour functionality of dietary fibre from agricultural byproducts and native foods
• Gut microflora, probiotics, prebiotics and health
• Non thermal technologies for added value
• Structure-function relationships of dairy proteins for food products.

This master degree may be undertaken in a project or thesis mode.

RMIT's Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) will equip you with fundamental knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, develop your communication and professional skills and introduce you to factors that impact the health of individuals and communities, particularly our First Nations peoples.

You'll build skills and knowledge of molecular diagnostics which will provide an overview of the detection and application of biochemical and molecular biology techniques (DNA or RNA) to provide clinical information in the study of human diseases, including infectious disease, inherited conditions and cancer.

You'll also learn about clinical immunology and pathology, gaining an understanding of the diagnosis and management of patients with diseases or disease processes that result from disturbed immunological or pathophysiological mechanisms.

As a graduate of this laboratory medicine degree, you'll be qualified to practise as a medical scientist in the diagnostic pathology industry, be competitive for employment in medical research and be competitive for entry into PhD studies.

Osteopaths are trained in diagnosis, management, and treatment of musculoskeletal pain disorders. They combine conventional medical testing procedures and skills of palpation and motion testing to inform their clinical rationale for treating a patient's condition.

You will be trained in musculoskeletal diagnosis, clinical procedures in performing conventional medical tests, physical examination techniques, and motion testing in order to assist in diagnosis of a patient’s condition.

Osteopaths make treatment decisions that depend on the patient as well as their condition. They might give advice on posture, exercise, lifting procedures, nutrition and other areas.

You will begin work-integrated learning in first year, with clinical observations in the RMIT Health Clinic.

In the final two years, you will conduct safe, skilled evaluation, diagnosis, and management of a wide range of musculoskeletal complaints under the supervision of qualified and nationally registered osteopaths, over a period of 38 weeks per year.

There is also an opportunity to complete a work placement in an Australian osteopathic clinic.

In RMIT's Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering) (Honours), you will develop the knowledge and skills you need to undertake a career that helps people affected by health conditions and the health professionals who support them.

Completing studies in biomechanics, medical electronics, mathematics, and engineering science, you will be well trained to work in the in the vibrant and expanding medical technology and biotechnology industries, producing assistive technologies, medical devices for rehabilitation applications, lab-on-a-chip diagnostics and biomaterials.

You will have access to world-leading researchers and 3D-printing facilities such as the Advanced Manufacturing Precinct, the Micro Nano Research facility and the 3DBioFab, placing you at the interface of cutting-edge technologies and advances in biomedical science and engineering.

The Asian region is a key growth area for the aviation market, with double-digit growth rates in air traffic across China, Hong Kong and Singapore. Massive passenger growth means many more aircraft, larger and more airports, and larger and new airlines. This points to a need for more aerospace engineers, and more aviation-related employees.

During your study in the Master of Engineering (Aerospace), you'll learn how to analyse complex engineering assets in the aerospace and aviation environment; and you will develop engineering, scientific and technological solutions to ensure problem-free operations. Your skills will be further sharpened with systematic problem-solving and adherence to engineering/technological systems design methodologies operating in the industry.

This degree is built on core studies in mechanical engineering, with a specialisation in automotive engineering to develop economical and sustainable automotive designs or solve modern transport problems such as electrification and automation.

You'll study vehicle power systems, vehicle noise and vibration, vehicle handling and control, sustainable vehicle design, automotive manufacturing, vehicle aerodynamics, and autonomous vehicles.

The degree incorporates complete car design with a focus on new technologies that benefit society such as driverless cars, full-electric, hybrid power trains and fuel cells. It takes a global view and is increasingly environmental in outlook.

The emphasis will be on hands-on learning, with your work largely laboratory-based, where you'll conduct experiments and design your own projects.

With the opportunity to undertake industry placements either locally or internationally, you'll be work-ready when you graduate. There are also opportunities to tackle research projects in partnership with industry, like the Engineers Without Borders Challenge.

Develop your advanced research skills and contribute to new developments in medical radiation sciences.

The School of Health and Biomedical Sciences takes a multidisciplinary approach to offer you opportunities to conduct leading-edge medical radiations research.

Your research will be supported by excellent research facilities including specialised laboratories.

Under expert supervision, you will develop your skills and join researchers already active in:

• Medical physics
• Nuclear medicine
• Quantitative and qualitative projects in medical imaging
• Radiation therapy.

The Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Honours) provides industry-based participatory learning.

In this degree, you will gain experience, skills and knowledge that can only be obtained from within the pharmaceutical science industry.

Placement allocation is determined by a competitive process. Based on student areas of interest, partners conduct interviews and select their preferred candidates.

Graduates continuing into honours from the RMIT Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences undergraduate degree will commence placement selection in third year.

Applicants graduating from an equivalent degree from other institutions will liaise with the program coordinator to facilitate preferences and placement interview times after application and enrolment.
