The Sociology major is concerned with the study of social life: the structural arrangements and cultural patterns that shape social action at the individual, group, and institutional levels. It examines the forces that shape individual character and the interactions between the individual and society from diverse socio-cultural, national and global perspectives. A Sociology major will provide you with the analytical and conceptual skills needed to diagnose today’s complex social problems, considering ethical implications and multiple perspectives.

You will study a wide range of topics in this major, including contemporary society and Australia in its global context, social policy, popular culture, inequality, migration and mobility, ethnicity and identity, relationships and emotions, health and mental illness, education and work, and urbanisation. Become a legal expert with valuable expertise in global affairs. You'll develop your legal knowledge and skills as you build a deep understanding of global issues, diplomacy, politics, and international trade.

Your law degree will introduce you to the fundamentals of legal practice and build your skills in advocacy, negotiation, and dispute resolution – all highly valued by employers across a range of industries.

At the same time, your global studies degree will immerse you in a wide range of global issues, including international relations and geopolitics, contemporary security issues, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and contemporary armed conflict and terrorism. When it comes to learning, there's no substitute for hands-on experience. Chinese studies advanced

A Chinese studies major will enable you to understand and use an increasingly significant world language. Chinese is spoken by nearly one-fifth of the global population, predominantly in the world’s second-largest economy, China. The Chinese Studies major will give you the opportunity to develop skills in oral and written Chinese (Mandarin), and enhance your understanding in China’s past (culture and tradition) and present (economy and technology). At more advanced levels, specialist subjects are available in Chinese for academic and professional purposes—these will help you develop your integrated communication skills to a professional level. Studying Chinese language and culture will give you an advantage in a range of industries and area of government, given that China has been Australia’s largest trading partner since 2007. You will have the opportunity to enrol in overseas programs to extend your language skills in-country. (Please note: overseas programs may be impacted by travel restrictions.) The major offers four entry-levels to cater to your standard in the Chinese language. You may enrol at beginners, intermediate, advanced or extension levels depending on your background and experience.

Agribusiness 

Agribusiness has historically been a part of Australia’s social fabric and a major driver of economic growth. The Australian agribusiness sector is well positioned to capitalise on the diverse opportunities presented by global population growth and subsequent demand for food and fibre, particularly in Asia. This creates a future in which the agribusiness sector has the enormous potential to once again be a major driver of economic growth and development in Australia and its regions.

The Agribusiness Major provides you with broad-based understanding of the sector and considers the particular factors influencing its relative success. It provides an introduction to animal and agricultural sciences and factors influencing decisions regarding land and water management. It also considers the key role of the agribusiness manager in driving the success of agribusinesses, as influenced by effective financial and risk management, as well as the effectiveness and efficiency of market relationships and supply chains that deliver customer-focussed outcomes.

A feature of this Major is the opportunity to develop new networks with students and industry partners from across Victoria’s regional footprint as you meet and learn from local agribusiness and community leaders. A highlight of the Agribusiness Major is its career focus, providing students with the skills and knowledge demanded by industry to manage the diverse issues impacting agribusinesses and regional economies.

The Agribusiness Major prepares graduates for careers in the agribusiness sector from the farm business through to the delivery of consumer-focussed food and fibre outcomes. Greek Studies Beginners

The Greek Studies major offers you the opportunity to study aspects of Greek language, culture, history and politics from the ancient world to contemporary Greece. In this major you will develop a critical understanding of the evolution of Greek culture in its original homeland and the diaspora, including multicultural Australia. Melbourne’s large Greek community provides you with a stimulating cultural and social environment in which to observe and practice what you learn. You can pair language subjects at a variety of levels with cultural subjects focussed on ancient and modern Greek literature, history and society. Spanish studies advanced

In the Spanish studies major you will learn the Spanish language and about Spanish and Latin American history and cultures. Spanish is one of the world's major languages and the first language of more than 400 million people. As well as developing your language skills, you can take subjects in Spanish and Latin American culture, linguistics, translation, literature and film. Learning Spanish will give you highly employable communication skills in a competitive globalised labour market. It is also important in international development and diplomatic contexts as an official language of the United Nations and the World Bank. As part of this major, you are encouraged to apply to do in-country study programs in Spanish through the University’s exchange programs. You can major in Spanish Studies whatever your skill level. Depending on your prior knowledge of and/or qualifications in the Spanish language you will start at Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced level or Extended.

The International Studies major allows you to make sense of the social, economic and political factors that contribute to how the world works. In this major, you’ll investigate the systems, structures and laws that shape international affairs from a range of perspectives. You’ll develop a keen sense of why the world faces the problems it does, how history has shaped the world we live in, and how policies to address the greatest global challenges are developed and can be improved. You’ll study subjects about security, economics, slavery, human trafficking, migration, development, international law, international organisations, foreign policy and modern Asia, and you will be strongly supported to study a language, experience the world through overseas study tours, and undertake internships.
