The health sciences majors include both theory and lab practice units. The International Studies major allows you to make sense of the social, economic and political factors that contribute to how the world works. In this major, you’ll investigate the systems, structures and laws that shape international affairs from a range of perspectives. You’ll develop a keen sense of why the world faces the problems it does, how history has shaped the world we live in, and how policies to address the greatest global challenges are developed and can be improved. You’ll study subjects about security, economics, slavery, human trafficking, migration, development, international law, international organisations, foreign policy and modern Asia, and you will be strongly supported to study a language, experience the world through overseas study tours, and undertake internships.

The Linguistics major will provide you with a deeper understanding of language as a primary part of human communication, cognition and culture. Through the Linguistics major, you will explore the many facets of language and develop the tools required to analyse specific language-related issues in detail. You will explore the building blocks of language and have the opportunity to discover how languages differ in structure (i.e. their sound systems, word-formation processes, and grammatical constructions), expression of meaning and acquisition. You will also consider the cultural and artistic uses of languages and the comparison of oral, written, and signed languages. In this major, you will work with linguistic data from a range of languages and apply theory to real life interactions.

You will work with staff from across the globe who have expertise in a wide range of linguistic and language areas including Australian Aboriginal languages, English (including Australian and other varieties of English), European languages, and the languages of China, South East Asia and South Asia.

Learn about the structure and history of languages, while examining how communication skills are acquired and developed. You'll also select from a range of language majors and explore the culture from which your chosen language emerged.

Develop an advanced understanding of linguistics, investigating the sound systems used for communication, how sentences are structured, and the ways we use language and interpret meaning.

Chinese studies intermediate

A Chinese studies major will enable you to understand and use an increasingly significant world language. Chinese is spoken by nearly one-fifth of the global population, predominantly in the world’s second-largest economy, China. The Chinese Studies major will give you the opportunity to develop skills in oral and written Chinese (Mandarin), and enhance your understanding in China’s past (culture and tradition) and present (economy and technology). At more advanced levels, specialist subjects are available in Chinese for academic and professional purposes—these will help you develop your integrated communication skills to a professional level. Studying Chinese language and culture will give you an advantage in a range of industries and area of government, given that China has been Australia’s largest trading partner since 2007. You will have the opportunity to enrol in overseas programs to extend your language skills in-country. (Please note: overseas programs may be impacted by travel restrictions.) The major offers four entry-levels to cater to your standard in the Chinese language. You may enrol at beginners, intermediate, advanced or extension levels depending on your background and experience.

With a Japanese studies major, you'll build competence in the modern Japanese language and study Japanese society, civilisation and culture.  You will learn to see the world from multiple perspectives through the study of language and culture. You will be taught by enthusiastic staff who specialise in sociology and anthropology of education, minorities, Koreans in Japan, gender, literary studies and popular culture. Japanese Studies major graduates have found employment in teaching, hospitality industry, diplomacy, government, international business, publishing, tourism, and translating, both in Japan and Australia. Japanese is one of the major LOTE subjects in Australian schools. You are encouraged to participate in an exchange program (one or two semesters) at one of the many universities with which La Trobe has exchange agreement. Analyse how governments use power to frame, develop and implement policy across the world.

In this major you'll explore the different institutions and processes through which citizens' identities and interests are represented in policy making in a variety of key areas ranging from foreign policy to cyber law. You will learn to analyse different policy making contexts and understand the crucial role of government policy making in solving the big global problems of our time.

This major will connect you to experts in public policy, democracy and democratisation, political theory, cyber law and policy, Australian foreign policy, and the history of Australian Aboriginal policy.

Sports media

Sports media prepares students for careers in both sports media, and media roles in sports organisations. Students complete both the journalism major, which delivers important industry-standard technical skills, but also core sports journalism subjects that focus on specific skills like sports commentary and broadcasting. They also complete a stream of core subjects from sport management, to gain an insight on the unique business structure of sports organisations. They will be prepared to work for news organisations, independent publishers or sporting organisations.
