Build on a foundation of normal anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology and physiology to look at the structural and functional changes that occur in human disease. Do you wonder how our technology works? Physics connects the microscopic rules of quantum mechanics to the macroscopic properties of modern materials. Participate in developing new types of solar cells, studying the interface between cells and matrix material, or building lasers based on quantum dots. Our experimental physicists are looking for students to contribute to these and other projects.

Computation is now fundamental to scientific discovery and engineering design alike. The Boeing 777 Dreamliner, for instance, was conceived mostly on a computer, complete with detailed calculations of aerodynamic and control properties. Biology can be studied at the level of molecules, cells, organisms and populations. Selecting a Biology module affords you the opportunity to study at all of these different scales or to focus in upper year courses on only one or two. Another reason the Biology modules are a popular choice is it allows you to study a wide range of organisms from microbes to humans. Students interested in the area of ecology will find that the Biology modules will allow them to take a wide range of engaging courses covering aspects of community, population, molecular and chemical ecology. Similarly, students interested in evolutionary biology can be engaged by courses on more quantitative aspects of evolution to evolutionary genetics. Both plant and animal physiology courses are also popular choices of students in these modules built on a strong cohort of research faculty in these areas.

Software engineering is a systematic and disciplined approach to the design and development of software. It applies technical computer science skills and engineering principles to the creation, operation, and maintenance of software systems. In Western’s Software engineering program, you will experience a real world education approach to allow you to specify, design, implement, and maintain innovative software systems. You will engage in experiential learning opportunities and project-based courses, building software systems, ranging from apps for mobile devices to systems used by world-wide organizations.

Students in Film Studies delve into the aesthetics, history, philosophy and the technology of film making through practical historical and theoretical courses. Film is considered from several viewpoints; including political, sociological, historical, and cultural ones – all enabling students to understand, analyze, discuss and explain film in its many forms. Shaped by contemporary, interdisciplinary scholarship, students will critically engage in the art of cinema and explore the global and historical conditions that have made it one of the most influential forms of visual culture.

Explore the dynamics that shape your everyday experiences as a gendered person in contemporary culture. In our courses you will learn how to develop a critical perspective that takes factors such as sex, gender, sexuality, race, class and (dis)ability into account. You might find your worldview transformed as you apply these perspectives to your study in other classes and to all aspects of your life. Our courses reflect an expanding field of feminist research including feminist theory, sexuality studies, health, queer and legal issues, philosophy, violence against women, women and equity in the workplace, and women and the creative arts.

Women's Studies and Feminist Research officially became a department at The University of Western Ontario in July 2006. The Women's Studies program was established in 1987 and is a department in both the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and the Faculty of Social Science. The Department offers a variety of degree modules and promotes feminist scholarship through provision for resident scholars, a Distinguished Speakers Series, faculty colloquia, annual conferences, and publications. It also has an active and lively Women's Studies Student Council.

Our programs in Middle East Studies offer students the opportunity to gain expertise in the Middle East and develop analytical skills of contemporary politics and business opportunities. The region has an economic growth potential for investments, markets, innovation and skills development.

The concentrated program of studies is aimed to provide students with the opportunity to specialize in the Middle East. The program offers the possibility to enrol in a combination of courses related to the Middle East from such disciplines as History, Sociology, Economics, Anthropology, Political Science, Religious studies and Modern Languages. One may choose a Major in Middle East studies (7 courses) or a Minor in History with specialization in the Middle East (4 courses). Students can also opt for specialization in only one of these disciplines: Religious Studies, Modern Languages, History, Social Studies or Politics of the Middle East.
