Social Service Workers focus on promoting equality, and addressing disadvantages that people face on the basis of race, disability, gender or age. They use their knowledge of human behaviour and development, communication, interviewing and counseling skills, to work with groups and/or communities to help them become more caring and capable of supporting their communities.

This program prepares students to work with people who are experiencing stressful events in their lives from an individual, family and community perspective. Students will learn how to intervene in crisis situations and will develop skills needed to assist individual clients, groups, families and communities to better meet their challenges and to enhance their social functioning. Clinical practice labs and field placements provide a milieu where students are able to apply theory into practice through interviewing, case assessment and planning. Students must be able to apply skills, such as teamwork and group work outside of class. They may also be required to seek feedback from agency professionals for lab work and video assignments. The Healthcare Management Program is designed for both domestic and international students with experience in the health care field who are seeking to enhance their existing post-secondary credentials and looking to transition into management roles in emerging healthcare environments, within the Ontario and Canadian healthcare context. Comprehension of patient needs, socio-cultural factors, behaviors and health services information are key focus areas of this program and will enable students to develop new skills in the areas of leadership, human resources management, conflict resolution, and strategic thinking.

Designed for those interested in gaining entrance to and/or a competitive advantage in the mineral exploration job market. This program provides students with the entry-level knowledge and skills to function as a valuable member of a mineral exploration team on projects in grassroots exploration to mine-site exploration. The two-semester program incorporates both classroom teaching and valuable hands-on experience during a culminating two-week field school. The modular format and distance or in-class delivery of this program provides the flexibility for students to study while maintaining their employment and caters to students in remote northern communities. Graduates are ready to enter the job market with a college certificate after only one year of study.

Important Information
The Mineral Exploration Techniques program is a blended program combining on-site and distance learning. Students require the use of a personal computer to access course content, submit assignments, and complete online tests.

Pathways to Success
Certificate to Diploma: Graduates of the Mineral Exploration Techniques program may choose to continue their studies in the Haileybury School of Mines – Mining Engineering Technician Diploma program at Northern College, with advanced standing in three common courses. Certificate to Diploma to Degree: Once graduates of the Mineral Exploration Techniques certificate program have successfully completed their Mining Engineering Technician diploma program, they may be eligible to enroll in the Bachelor of Mining Engineering Technology degree (BTech) from Queen’s University (blended learning format) in two additional years plus a bridging semester.

In all process industries, quantities such as temperature, pressure, level and flow need to be measured and controlled. Control and measurement are done by various means including: electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment, and computers. The instrumentation technician installs, maintains, tests and calibrates the equipment used to control and measure. The technician works with the process designers and the work includes troubleshooting control loops, adjusting controllers and systems, and programming and troubleshooting computers.

This one-year program will prepare students to assist members of the veterinary team. They will gain the skills required to assist professionals working in associated fields of veterinary science and other applied animal sciences. Upon completion of the program, students will be able to care for patients’ basic needs under the direction of the veterinarian or designate, administer and monitor the use of physical restraint agents, assist the technologist and technician by preparing for surgical procedures, assist the technologist and technician with standard diagnostic laboratory work, counsel clients and co-workers on patient care, prepare labels for medication, book appointments, and perform receptionist duties.

In the business world, solid accounting skills combined with marketing strategy and creativity are in high demand.  The wide variety of courses offered within this program will yield a well rounded Business Graduate.

The Business – Human Resources program will prepare students to participate in staffing, performance management, training, employee relations, health and safety, and benefits and compensation administration functions. Students will develop skills in communication, information technology, and teamwork, and will learn organizational development strategies to support the human resources activities of an organization.

This two-year diploma program is suited to students who are interested in working with animals. The program will provide them with the knowledge and animal handling skills required to be an integral team player within veterinary practices, research facilities, or other animal related industry.

Students will learn to perform basic patient examination, collect data on vital signs, administer medications and prepare pharmaceuticals as prescribed by a veterinarian. They will explore anesthesia, animal nursing, surgical assistance, dental prophylactic procedures, diagnostic laboratory work and tests, such as blood chemistries, culture and sensitivity, and electrocardiograms. This program covers veterinary practice management skills including computer applications, recognizing behavioral signs of small animals and educating and counseling clients in the area of pet nutrition.

Through a combination of lectures and practical experience, this one-year program will prepare students to work as an animal groomer. Students can use the skills they receive to work for other animal service providers or to start their own business. This program may be taken concurrently with the Veterinary Assistant program. Graduates of this program are equipped with a solid base of technical skills and knowledge in animal grooming. They will be able to work in a number of settings, such as veterinary clinics, veterinary hospitals, pet grooming centers and pet stores. They will also be able to start their own business.
