The East Asian region constitutes one of the most dynamic and intellectually rich regions in the world. The impact of East Asian economic development has been keenly felt in recent decades and the region has a major impact on world affairs. The legacy of East Asian history, religious and social values, literatures, etc., is a major factor in current affairs in the region, and this legacy will continue to shape our global future.

The EALC program is devoted to the study of East Asian cultures. The program introduces students to East Asian cultures and societies through two components: a) the study of East Asian languages (Chinese—Mandarin and Classical, and Japanese), and b) the study of East Asian cultures through a multi-disciplinary approach (Religious Studies, History, Literature, Cinema, Economics, International Development Studies). A unique feature of the program is its focus on the intellectual legacy of East Asian cultures, introduced through the study of texts and ideas in the historical and cultural contexts that shaped them. The rationale for this focus is a belief that just as East Asian economies are having a global impact beyond the East Asian region, intellectual beliefs and cultural habits will challenge hitherto global presuppositions regarding accepted practices and habits of thought.

The EALC program is administered through the Department of Religion & Culture. Graduates who are interested in careers related to East Asia in fields such as education, government, and business benefit greatly from courses in East Asian Languages & Cultures.

The specialization in Creative Writing focuses not only on reading and studying works of literary art, but on learning how to create them as well. See the Frequently Asked Questions, above, for more information.

Sample Program
This is only one example of one possible path through the program. Students should normally begin with  2102 and 2002 and then take 3101. After that, they may take CW courses in any order.  Paths will differ, depending on students' interests, the number of courses they take each year, and which courses are offered in any given year. Biology is a broad discipline, which includes the subject areas of botany, zoology, microbiology, cell biology, ecology, and genetics. It examines all life forms from the simple to the complex, and is an ideal partner to study in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. If you have an aptitude for science and possess a keen desire to understand the living world, you will find the study of biology very rewarding.

At The University of Winnipeg, we teach a wide range of courses and offer active research programs in botany ecology, forest ecology, mosquito biology, evolutionary genetics, molecular biology, evolutionary physiology, soil microbiology and remediation, limnology, bioinformatics, genomics, dendrochronology, behavioural biology of birds, effects of UV radiation on the environment, and cell biology.

Biology can be explored in several different programs of study at The University of Winnipeg which can lead to a Bachelor of Science degree (3-year, 4-year, or Honours).

As of May 2016, students will be able to register in this Specialization and it will be noted on their transcripts.

The Screen and Cultural Studies Specialization focuses not only on literary texts, but also on cinematic, media, and cultural texts. Courses in this area reflect an interest in literary and cultural history; literary and cinematic forms, movements, and genres; cultural and critical theory; audience and reception studies; and the intersections between literature, film and other forms of cultural production.

All students are welcome to take courses in this area, whether they choose the specialization or not.

Women's and Gender Studies seeks to foster awareness and appreciation of the realities and diverse experiences of women. You’ll develop critical consciousness of social inequalities affecting women, including those based on gender, age, race, class, disability and sexual orientation.

We see the application of artificial intelligence in our daily lives, from checking the weather forecast to social media feeds, from banking and finance to healthcare, amongst others.

In this program, graduates master the skills to create and use problem-solving algorithms to provide insights, predictions, and operationalization strategies needed to transform any organization into an innovative, efficient, and sustainable company of the future.

OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES
The use of artificial intelligence is common place on devices ranging from personal smartphones to large industrial equipment. From simple algorithms to complex decision making, this program ensures that graduates have a firm, applied knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning.  While the curriculum and learning outcomes include establishing a general understanding of the theories underlying AI, greater emphasis is placed on the application of these techniques in a practical setting.

Successful graduates of this program shall be able to:

• Design and implement data acquisition, management, and cleansing solutions to support data science applications;
• Use statistical techniques in the development of data science applications;
• Describe legal, ethical, and societal considerations arising from the application of data science and artificial intelligence;
• Identify suitable applications and recommend the use of AI within an organization;
• Design the overall solution architecture required to support AI; and
• Design, test, and implement applied AI solutions.

Mathematics is often described as the "queen of the sciences".  It is essential to many fields, including engineering, finance, medicine, economics and the natural sciences.  Math is everywhere!  It is used to secure your data when you enter it online, in fraud detection, to understand medical scans, in weather prediction, for modeling wildfires and for creating efficient networks for security systems or air traffic.  Studying mathematics trains you to think critically and develops strong problem-solving skills.  

One branch of mathematics, called cryptography, helps to keep our information safe.  When you use your credit card online, mathematics is used to encrypt this information so that a third party cannot read it.  Mathematicians are also essential to national security, where their high-level problem-solving skills are used for encryption and decryption for intelligence gathering and computer security. Another branch of mathematics, called graph theory, is used to design and analyze networks, such as security, transportation or social networks.

Combining aspects of anthropology with biological and physical sciences, Bioanthropology program teaches you to examine human biological systems of the past and present. You’ll gain understanding of comparative anatomy, cellular biology, and methods in human and primate evolution as you obtain experience in current laboratory techniques and procedures

Theatre and Film – one of the largest in Canada – includes the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in one of six different areas of study: Acting and Directing, Design, Drama in Education, Filmmaking, Playwriting, Stage Management or Production.
