The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree offered through the Department of Business and Administration is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in business, in the private, public or non-profit sectors. We nurture socially conscience business leaders and entrepreneurs that are capable of adapting to the ever-changing needs of the modern business world.

The Business and Administration program develops critical thinking, analytic and decision-making abilities, oral and written communication skills, and the self-confidence to effectively apply these skills. Some courses in the program are taught using the case method, a simulation of real business situations from the perspective of the actual decision-maker. he 4-Year BA allows flexibility of choice for students who want to sample a wide variety of courses; to develop a stronger understanding of language, literature, and culture; and to strengthen their reading and writing skills and their powers of critical thinking. This degree provides knowledge and practical skills that are assets in everyday life and in almost any career. Critical readers and writers are required in professions such as law, public service, business, medicine and politics. More directly, the study of English can lead to careers in teaching or careers that involve writing, such as news reporting, publishing, business advertising, and public relations.

Because this program offers much freedom of choice, it is important for students to think carefully about their interests and goals when choosing courses. Chemistry is the essential science to the building blocks of life. It spans all aspects of our lives, from our health and nutrition to our scientific discoveries and management of an environmentally sustainable world. A degree in this “central science” can take you anywhere, allowing you to specialize in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, or physical chemistry.

Are you interested in issues affecting our environment? Environmental Studies and Sciences combines many different perspectives to understand the changes in our environment, while acknowledging human impacts and providing a framework to develop solutions for environmental programs. You can choose your course of study from six different subject areas including Chemistry, Forest Ecology, Forest Policy and Management, Global Environmental Systems, Issues in Sustainability, and Urban Environments

This degree investigates living systems by combining the knowledge and methodologies of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, and microbiology with those of the physical sciences. The University of Winnipeg offers three Biochemistry Degrees: B.Sc. (3-yr), B.Sc. (4-yr), and B.Sc. (Honours). Political Science is the systematic study of power, authority and governance that helps us understand and engage in the important processes and institutions that structure our lives.

Whether we are conscious of it or not, politics affects our lives on a daily basis and in a vast number of ways. How we identify and think of ourselves, the activities we are permitted and encouraged to participate in, and how resources are allocated throughout society are all issues that Political Scientists study. Our Department offers a wide range of courses that examine the institutional, historical, ideological and economic aspects that frame our society. They consider such problems as relations between nation-states; the movement, cooperation and interactions of groups of people across state borders; the interactions between state and society; the nature of power and authority; and the impact of such things as political parties, interest groups, social classes and other societal organizations.

Political Science faculty members at The University of Winnipeg are committed to high quality teaching that draws on their own research expertise. We see our job as more than just teaching, but also mentoring and fostering a vibrant atmosphere of intellectual discussion and investigation. You can choose from a wide variety of courses within the following five streams: Global Politics; Political Thought; Law, Public Administration, and Public Policy; Canadian and Comparative Politics; City and Community Politics.

The Screen and Cultural Studies Specialization focuses not only on literary texts, but also on cinematic, media, and cultural texts. Courses in this area reflect an interest in literary and cultural history; literary and cinematic forms, movements, and genres; cultural and critical theory; audience and reception studies; and the intersections between literature, film and other forms of cultural production.

All students are welcome to take courses in this area, whether they choose the specialization or not.

The field of finance has its roots in the discipline of economics and business. This program will provide students with the conceptual tools to understand a number of issues from modern finance theory and applications. The program will provide students with a solid understanding of the operation of capital markets and capital market instruments, including equities, fixed income securities, as well futures markets, options and other derivatives. The program will provide students with an in-depth understanding of topics in modern finance and financial economics as it relates to the capital structure of firms and how these financial instruments affect the overall operation of modern financial systems.

Students have the option of pursuing a BA in Economics and Finance or a BBA in Economics in Finance.

Urban and Inner-City Studies is an interdisciplinary Major concerned with the examination of the city as a dynamic environment. Our unique location serves as a gateway for north end residents to enter the University of Winnipeg and as a place for the larger UWinnipeg student body to connect to and learn from the north end community. The program combines a traditional urban studies focus with courses that examine various aspects of the inner city, such as the urban Aboriginal experience, the immigrant and refugee experience, and the role of women. In Canada, cities continue to be centres of great challenge: from managing suburban growth to promoting inner-city revitalization; from responding to the opportunities and concerns created by rapidly changing demographics, to those created by globalization and socio-economic change. Cities are also home to increased concentrations of poverty and social and political exclusion. The Urban and Inner-City Studies program provides an opportunity to examine the political, economic, social and spatial context of these and many other important aspects of urban change from an interdisciplinary perspective.
