Biology is a broad discipline, which includes the subject areas of botany, zoology, microbiology, cell biology, ecology, and genetics. It examines all life forms from the simple to the complex, and is an ideal partner to study in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. At The University of Winnipeg, we teach a wide range of courses and offer active research programs in botany ecology, forest ecology, mosquito biology, evolutionary genetics, molecular biology, evolutionary physiology, soil microbiology and remediation, limnology, bioinformatics, genomics, dendrochronology, behavioural biology of birds, effects of UV radiation on the environment, and cell biology.

Biology can be explored in several different programs of study at The University of Winnipeg which can lead to a Bachelor of Science degree (3-year, 4-year, or Honours).

Exploring the past helps us understand the complexities of the present, and anticipate the challenges of the future. As a student of History, you will explore the careers of major figures such as Galileo, Gandhi and Stalin.. You’ll improve your ability to evaluate evidence and learn how to present your interpretations in clear and logical written and oral arguments.

The study of Geography is concerned with the Earth's surface in two ways - as the science of interaction between natural elements of the environment, such as weather, plants, soils and landforms; and secondly, as the science of the distribution and activities of the Earth's population in response to various social and environmental factors. Systematic studies in Geography examine the locations, distributions, arrangement, and association of a group of interrelated features. In contrast, regional studies examine the totality of geographic phenomena in a particular area. No matter what approach is taken, there are certain skills and techniques that are of particular geographic relevance.

As a reflection of the diversity that exists within the study of Geography and the special skills required, the Department offers courses within three fields of study - Cultural Geography, Physical Geography and Geomatics. You may attain either the General or Four-year Bachelor's degree in either Arts or Science, as well as the B.A. or B.Sc.Honours degree.

Geography offers a considerable variety of career opportunities. High schools require a continuing supply of Geography teachers. Various federal and provincial agencies dealing with conservation, town planning, recreation, landscape architecture and the utilization of Canada's resource also provide opportunities, especially to those with Honours or graduate work in Geography. Undergraduate training in the subject is often required for certain business careers, especially in surveying, market assessment, and location and general commercial development.

Kinesiology is the art and science of human movement from a psychological, sociological, biological, mechanical and physiological perspective. Professionals in the field of Kinesiology are interested in enhancing sport performance; the promotion of physical literacy; the technical and tactical aspects of coaching; the short and long term effects of exercise; and the impact of physical activity on society. 

A bachelor degree in Kinesiology prepares students for a variety of career opportunities in areas such as sport administration, health and physical activity promotion,  adapted physical activity, senior’s  fitness and wellbeing and children’s physical literacy  This degree also prepares students to pursue further education at the graduate level.

Women's and Gender Studies promotes an intersectional approach to understanding social problems and phenomena. It pays special attention to the ways sex, gender, and sexuality are shaped by colonialism, racism, ageism, homophobia, and transphobia, as well as by constructions of difference based on class, (dis)ability, religion, ethnicity, and culture. Our unique department brings these perspectives to the university, and represents feminism in the academy. In our classes, students of all genders and sexualities learn about feminist movements to end sexism, exploitation, and related social oppressions. The department encourages diversity among its students and in its curriculum, and offers the means to contribute to social change.
Currently, there is a demonstrated need for people with a background in Women's and Gender Studies to take up work in such areas as social services, education, policy development, welfare, health care, counselling and therapy, law, media, advertising, public administration, finance, and management.

Are you interested in issues affecting our environment? Environmental Studies and Sciences combines many different perspectives to understand the changes in our environment, while acknowledging human impacts and providing a framework to develop solutions for environmental programs. You can choose your course of study from six different subject areas including Chemistry, Forest Ecology, Forest Policy and Management, Global Environmental Systems, Issues in Sustainability, and Urban Environments

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree offered through the Department of Business and Administration is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in business, in the private, public or non-profit sectors. We nurture socially conscience business leaders and entrepreneurs that are capable of adapting to the ever-changing needs of the modern business world.

The Business and Administration program develops critical thinking, analytic and decision-making abilities, oral and written communication skills, and the self-confidence to effectively apply these skills. Some courses in the program are taught using the case method, a simulation of real business situations from the perspective of the actual decision-maker. Computer-based simulations, experiential exercises, guest speakers, and field trips are also used to connect course material to the business world.  A new co-op work study program allows students to add career real work experience to their UW Degree.

Bachelor of Business Administration (4 years):-

The four-year BBA prepares students for managerial work and also for further study in business administration such as an MBA or other graduate degree program.  In the four-year program, you can (and many students do) elect to take a 'general stream' degree, which allows maximum flexibility for course selection. Other students elect to narrow their studies into their choice of five Areas of Concentration:

• Marketing
• International Business
• Co-operative Enterprises
• Accounting
• Human Resource Management & Organisational Behaviour

It is not unusual for students to pursue two Concentrations simultaneously (e.g., Marketing and International Business) in our four-year program.

This degree investigates living systems by combining the knowledge and methodologies of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, and microbiology with those of the physical sciences. A degree in Biochemistry will prepare you for work in vario Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary program which combines Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, and Microbiology with the techniques of the physical sciences to investigate living systems.

Through this program, you will gain a thorough understanding of the molecular aspects of the structure, function, and metabolism of prokaryotes, animals, and plants. You will also obtain experience in up-to-date laboratory techniques and procedures.

This is one of the most exciting areas of science at this time and students will be kept abreast of advances in the field and their impact on humans and other life forms.

The University of Winnipeg offers three Biochemistry Degrees: B.Sc. (3-yr), B.Sc. (4-yr), and B.Sc. (Honours). As a graduate, you will be well qualified to work in university, government, and other research laboratories or in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Graduates with a 4-Year B.Sc. or B.Sc. (Honours) could also proceed to graduate studies in the Life Sciences.

The three year major was designed primarily for students wishing to pursue a career in teaching. These students would take the required courses as per their chosen level they wish to teach in the school system (early, middle or senior years). In the third year of study, students would apply to the faculty of Education for a two year after degree. The student would have both a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education and a Bachelor of Education.

Some students choose to use the three year degree as an entry level degree to other professional degrees such as the Master degree in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Medicine and Physicians Assistant program to name a few. You should be aware that a three year degree is less competitive than a 4 year degree and most universities now offer four year degrees only.

Theatre and Film – one of the largest in Canada – includes the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in one of six different areas of study: Acting and Directing, Design, Drama in Education, Filmmaking, Playwriting, Stage Management or Production. The Department also offers a BA (Honours) in Acting, Directing, Design, Playwriting, and Stage Management and Production.  Your coursework will encompass a full range of practical and theoretical study, and will prepare you for an exciting career in the arts.
