The study of Japanese at Waikato involves the acquisition of Japanese language and the study of the history and culture of Japan.

The National Institute for Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA) is a research institute based in the University's School of Social Sciences. It is New Zealand's sole national institute of demographic and population-focused research, and the only such unit to generate and coordinate New Zealand research in population studies.

Population problems are among the most serious challenges we face for the 21st Century. Population issues have implications for the environment, employment, families, health, urbanisation, migration, security in old age and refugee movements. It is vital that research develops integrated approaches to these issues, and policy makers and planners pay serious attention to population trends, their causes and effects.

Psychology is about understanding the behaviour and cognitive processes of people and animals in their physical, social and organisational environment. As a behavioural science, it examines the way behaviour is learned and can be changed. As a social science, it focuses on individuals within the context of families, organisations and other groups, communities, cultures and societies. As a social science, Psychology focuses on individuals within the context of families, organisations and other groups, communities, cultures and societies. It takes a broad and encompassing approach, because social policy impacts on all parts of everyday life – from health and education to families, transport and housing, plus the systems and institutions that support them.

Your Social Policy studies at Waikato will cover why and how societies respond to problems such as poverty and unemployment. You'll take part in popular and recurring social policy debates, and gain an in-depth understanding of why social problems arise. You'll investigate and evaluate different ways of responding to those problems.

At the end of your studies, you'll be equipped to seek employment opportunities within government agencies, non-government organisations, tertiary education institutions, voluntary and community agencies, and groups advocating for social equity and change.

This highly practical subject is for students who wish to develop the hands-on technical skills required to work in professional media production studios, such as film, documentary and television, web series, podcasting, game design, sound design, soundscape, music, web media, and more.

Papers cover all stages of the media production process; from pre- to post-production.

Students will be equipped with the know-how to design and implement image-text-motion, sound/music and audio-visual methods of communication.

For example, you can learn how to use Adobe software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) to design and produce page layouts, illustrations, and edit images for print and web applications.

Or you might prefer to study film production and gain the practical skills to shoot and edit short films, using a camera, sound gear, lighting techniques and digital editing (After Effects).

Students can also learn about the principles of good design, or develop the skills to create original music using digital audio technology.

More advanced papers focus on areas such as interactive media design, podcasting, film production, design thinking, visual communication, and creative music technology.

A major in Theatre Studies at Waikato can be a rich and challenging pathway within an Arts degree. It has a wide range of vocational applications within the Performing Arts.  This suite of papers leads the student through processes of performance-making.

Waikato's Theatre Studies program takes a practice-led approach to teaching and learning different aspects of theatre. We encouraging students to explore and develop their performance practice, while thinking through what theatre does and can do in the world.

The papers in the program provide opportunities for the practical study of performance, although all are underpinned by relevant critical theory. The program focusses on Theatre as an evolving, living, breathing practice, and places emphasis on the processes of performance, as well as public performances.

Practical tutorials, seminars and rehearsals take place the theatre laboratory space, and the Playhouse Theatre within the University's purpose-built Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts, which is also the venue for many of the public performances.
