In today’s business landscape, brand is everything. But what exactly is brand and how do we manage it for the best possible outcome? Brunel’s Corporate Brand Management MSc examines the importance of branding, corporate identity, image and reputation.

You will study a wide-range of brands (e.g. product, service, personal, company) from a variety of cultures and sectors (private, public and not-for-profit) including start-ups, SMEs, and multinationals. You will also study how corporate branding is key to an organisation’s overall marketing strategy.

Brunel Business School was the first school to introduce a specialised MSc in corporate brand management back in 2007. The Corporate Brand Management MSc is taught by an enthusiastic team including Professor John M.T. Balmer, who is highly regarded in the corporate brand domain, as well as renowned brand specialists Dr Sharifah Alwi and Dr Yousra Asaad, amongst others.

You have the option of taking either a year-long or six to twelve week work placement, depending on your needs, to help you enhance your skills and boost your career prospects while you study. We were one of the first business schools to offer postgraduate degrees with placement and the feedback has been that this is incredibly useful as you can put your learning into practice immediately. Topics covered on the degree include corporate and product brand identity, corporate and product brand image and reputation, corporate marketing, and corporate communications. You will also study marketing communications and strategy from a corporate branding perspective.

At Brunel you’ll develop your scientific skills in the classroom, laboratory and through field work. You’ll attend residential field trips in the UK and abroad. Our current trips take students to Dorset and Tenerife.

Your first year will bring together many different disciplines. You’ll use physical, chemical and biological knowledge to develop an understanding of the Earth’s environment.

Your course is based on the 15 “most wanted skills” identified from a national employer’s survey by the Natural Environment Research Council. This means that in addition to studying scientific topics, you’ll learn to use computer programs such as GIS, you’ll perform data analysis and be trained in areas such as public engagement, communication, leadership and teamwork.

You'll also have the option to carry out a placement as part of your degree, giving you the experience to create a stand-out CV. The Environmental Sciences BSc offers a unique compressed degree where you can carry out two placements within your three year degree during summer vacations, where you’ll earn a graduate level salary. You can also carry out a one year placement between years two and three, as part of a four year degree.

The Education BA at Brunel offers you the opportunity to combine the study of education with professional practice to give you a pathway into a range of education professions and postgraduate professional study including teacher education.

Whether you are looking to explore education related fields – such as counselling, educational psychology, social services, local authority work, social work, administration and education management – or you already know you want to teach, Brunel’s Education BA will give you a strong foundation from which to build.

The course will equip you with a broad and balanced view of educational theory, policy and practice within a range of educational contexts. You will also have numerous opportunities to develop a range of transferable skills such as critical reflection, systematic analysis, communication, collaboration, presentation and writing skills.

When it comes to professional practice, the Education BA includes three integrated work placements to give you the opportunity to explore different educational settings. To help you manage your time, you can do your placement experience weekly or in a block over the holidays.

The Brunel Banking and Finance BSc provides students with the knowledge, skills and insights needed to effectively pursue careers in banking and financial services.

You’ll get a solid grounding in micro and macroeconomic principles, accounting practices and the workings of financial markets before studying advanced topics including real estate finance, financial regulation, risk management and how banking and financial systems operate in an international context.

You’ll also gain insight into the dynamic relationship between investors, financial markets and the institutions that enable transactions between the two.

You’ll study econometrics and develop highly valued skills in data modelling, and get training in analytical packages widely used by business and financial institutions such as Bloomberg, Reuters, SAS, EViews and STATA.

We offer two study options. You can choose three years full-time or four years full-time with a one-year professional placement between years two and three that will give you the chance to apply the theoretical principles you’ve learned to a working environment.

You can tailor the final year of your course to specialise in an area of particular interest.

All of our economics and finance undergraduate and postgraduate degrees offer the opportunity to gain professional experience through work placements.

• Placements and economics and finance internships are a great way to see if your future career is right for you.  For undergraduate courses you take your placement between the second and third years of your chosen course, you’ll have the opportunity to apply your skills in a real-life working environment, with real responsibilities.  For postgraduate courses if you're studying over two years full-time, you will take a year's work placement, or if you choose the 16 month option you take a 6-12 week placement.
• More than just a way to earn some extra money during your studies, you will get the chance to taste life as a professional before entering the graduate world.
• Depending on what suits you, your work placement can be taken in small, medium or large organisations across different sectors. Our students have recently secured placements at Morgan Stanley, the Department of Trade and Industry, and HM Treasury. You’ll have to apply for a placement like you would any other professional job but with the expert guidance of your personal tutor and our Professional Development Centre you’ll be supported every step of the way to find a role that suits you and your goals.
• During your placement, an academic member of staff from the Economics and Finance department will keep in touch, and your employer will be invited to attend a tutorial day at Brunel with you.

Perhaps you enjoy writing, but prefer working with the facts rather than fiction? Or you have a keen interest in presenting to camera as a broadcast journalist or you’re an experienced blogger or vlogger. If so, a journalism degree might be good match for you.

Brunel’s Journalism and Culture BA course offers a balanced combination of journalism practice and theory to help provide the tools you need to pursue a variety of roles within the industry.

As part of the course you will learn the skills of journalism such as research, pitching story ideas, interviewing, reporting and writing across multi-media platforms as well as the relationship between journalism and culture and society.

You’ll learn across video, audio and magazine journalism and because it’s so hand-on you’ll feel like you’re building real skills for future.

As you journey through the course you’ll develop a critical understanding of the communication environment where journalism and media and cultural industries operate, as you develop the analytical ability to explore intellectual inquiries and present findings.

This London journalism course is taught by world-class academics, many of whom are active professional journalists who will be sources of inspiration when you come to do your own journalism research project in your final year.

Journalism and Culture BA has a strong emphasis on digital technology and multi-platform journalism and you will learn in a 24-hour, state-of-the-art, multi-platform digital newsroom and broadcast facilities, using the latest edition industry-standard hardware and software.

The course will also enable you to develop a critical and in-depth understanding of the media industry that will help you succeed in the fast-changing digital world.

In your second year, you’ll have the option to take the NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) Diploma in Journalism at no extra cost. The NCTJ Diploma is the number one industry recognised gateway into journalism, sought after by media professionals worldwide.

Once you graduate, you’ll have a unique set of skills and expertise that will give you a competitive edge when applying for jobs with cultural, political and social decision-making organizations in the UK and across the world.

Brunel students enjoy their own creative writing journal to showcase their talents as well as the Brunel Union of Students ‘Le Blurb’ publication, so they’ll be plenty of avenues to practice your craft.

You’ll also get to hear from alumni and guest speakers about what it’s really like to work in the journalism. Previous representatives from small papers, as well as the BBC and The Guardian have helped to provide further insight into the industry.

How does the media shape culture and society? What role does the media play in people’s lives? Are audiences now producers? Are young people disconnected from traditional politics?

On this course you’ll explore the answers to these questions and many more. You’ll focus on the rapid changes in global media and communications and their social and cultural consequences within an international context. You’ll have the opportunity to meet professionals working in the broadcast, advertising and marketing industries who visit us on campus and through organised field trips.

Maybe your background is in media, sociology or another relevant discipline, or perhaps you are already a professional in the communications or broadcast industry seeking to gain a more sociologically-informed understanding of those industries. On this course you’ll develop the advanced skills and knowledge you need.

The Brunel Master of Laws (LLM Law) is a flexible programme that enables graduates to specialise in a particular area of English or international law, or to obtain proficiency  across a range of legal disciplines.

Our wide choice of elective modules, including in-demand subjects such as trade law, intellectual property, and human rights, allows you to tailor your own programme to your legal interests and career objectives.

In a legal job market where many employers are looking for candidates with advanced, specialised training, your LLM Law will improve your career prospects whether in a law practice, business, government or academia.

You can choose to study 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time (both start in September) or study 15 months full-time or 27 months part-time (both start in January).

On this Business Computing BSc degree course, you get to specialise in eBusiness, learning about how software and IT systems can support business transactions and drive sales. Through a mixture of theory and real-world practice, you’ll learn how to determine a dynamic mix of processes, which allow information delivery systems and users to carry out business effectively and efficiently. You’ll come to intuitively understand how an organisation’s information systems need to adapt to the changes and developments natural to growth and progress.

In addition to the compulsory business computing content you will learn about the underlying models and latest approaches used by companies in building successful eBusiness platforms.

Our course is designed for flexibility, so if you’re not sure which route you want to go down, you can select modules and specialise gradually during your time with us. You can transfer between Computer Science and Business Computing up to the start of Level 2, then should you wish, you can choose a specialism up to the start of Level 3.

We know that when you graduate, you’ll be working on large projects. That’s why one third of each year of our programmes is project-based. On Levels 1 and 2, you’ll build a software solution in a team, and in your final year you’ll carry out an individual project. You’ll also have the opportunity to showcase your projects at the annual Made in Brunel (Software Innovation) event, with awards presented by the likes of Cisco, Sky and Xerox.

As part of your degree course, you’ll have the chance to take a year-long work placement between your second year and third year. We’ll support you in finding that all-important paid professional experience, in the UK or abroad. The feedback we’ve received is that those who have taken a placement are much more likely to find a job for which their degree was a formal requirement as it gives you a competitive advantage. Recent graduates have gone on to work for well-known names such as Accenture, Toshiba, Microsoft, British Airways, O2, and Barclays.

Our programmes are accredited by the British Computer Society, the Chartered Institute for IT, for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional (CITP). The accreditation also allows you to apply for professional membership of the BCS after you have successfully completed your degree. 

The department has been awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze, recognising our dedication to the advancement of gender equality in STEM subjects. We now have an ongoing three-year action plan to further implement strategies and improve our practices. The Brunel Accountancy BSc provides students interested in entering the profession with the knowledge, skills and insights that inform current accountancy practice and financial management.

You’ll get a comprehensive grounding in the conceptual, professional and practical aspects of accountancy at national and global levels, and develop your ability to identify and solve complex accounting problems across a range of business scenarios.

You also gain a firm understanding of the financial drivers underpinning business leadership, strategy, planning, governance and ethics.

You will be trained in Sage Accounting software as well as in analytical packages widely used by business and financial institutions such as SAS, EViews, Bloomberg, Reuters and STATA.

ACCA and CIMA accreditation is available on selected modules within this degree, which means you’ll gain exemptions from certain professional qualifying exams.

The theoretical and practical expertise you’ll gain from your Brunel Accountancy BSc will make you a ‘business ready’ graduate preferred by employers in the public and private sectors.

What is public relations? Who does it and why? How does it relate to the media practices? How do you plan a public relations campaign? And why is it important to have a sophisticated understanding of cultural dynamics in order to understand public relations?

On this MA you will engage with theoretical concepts that can help you understand how Public Relations and the Media work and why they are significant; it looks at PR and media history, engages in lively debates about these industries and teaches you practical PR skills which you can creatively deploy in campaign plans.

While Public Relations has often been taught through business studies or marketing approaches, this MA approaches PR through the lens of media studies and cultural studies. This makes for a fresh stimulating take on PR at a time when media practices are changing radically and when cultural industries, cultural exchange and cultural politics are more important than ever.

This MA will offer you the opportunity to examine the context in which PR practice takes place and to develop the knowledge and skills needed to work in a sophisticated and ethical way in PR.
