If you are interested in the way in which we communicate and how it can influence people, studying linguistics will help you unravel how language is inextricably linked to who we are.

Linguistics is devoted to the scientific study of natural language and concerned with how languages evolve, are structured and what they have in common. It also studies how languages are acquired and used.

Our program enables you to develop a sound knowledge of both theoretical and applied perspectives and places emphasis on English, with examples from other languages where appropriate. The core elements of the course teach you about sentence structure (syntax), meaning (semantics and pragmatics), forensic linguistics, and phonetics and phonology. You will also learn about language use and variation in different social contexts, the media, and intercultural settings.

The roles of buyers and merchandisers are key to the success of any fashion business. They are responsible for generating revenue through trading the product by assessing sales, customer demand, market trends, selecting, sourcing and managing products to maximize sales. The performance of these two roles is crucial to the success of the business.

The BSc (Hons) Fashion Buying and Merchandising course provide students with a thorough understanding of all aspects of the management of the product from concept to consumer, including the strategies needed to start a new business and improve business performance, helping students to succeed in a truly exciting field of work.

The breadth of knowledge gained from this course also includes product innovation, market analysis and business analytics with the essential skills needed to not only to secure graduate employment or start a new business, but for career progression to more senior functions through the focus on business strategy, supply chain and the management of people.

Spanish
In both the private and public sectors, there is demand for professionals with strong language skills who can work in culturally diverse environments. Studying Spanish at Manchester Met will give you the opportunity to learn from native speakers. Our languages department have created their own multi-cultural community, including British, exchange and international students, along with foreign language assistants, allowing you to be absorbed into the everyday use of your chosen language.

We have been providing professional language courses for more than 30 years and our staff are nationally, and in many cases internationally, recognised experts in their field. Our strong local, national and global links will help to enhance your study and future employment opportunities.

If you take Spanish as a major or equal subject you will be required to spend your third year abroad in Spain or Latin America. If Spanish is your minor subject, the course will be three years with no study abroad.

Placement options
If you take Spanish as a major or equal subject you will have the opportunity to spend your third year in Spain or Latin America and we will assist you in choosing from a choice of partner universities where you can study. You will then return to Manchester Met for your fourth year.

If you major in Business all our courses offer four-year placement and exchange routes, where you have the opportunity to spend your third year studying overseas or on industrial placement working for a company, after which you will return to study for your final year. You can make a decision on whether to follow this route at the end of your first year of study.

Philosophy is about making sense of ourselves and the world around us. It’s about asking and trying to answer the most fundamental theoretical and practical questions - from trying to understand the nature of consciousness, to whether current political institutions enable political freedom.

On BA (Hons) Philosophy you’ll consider ground-breaking philosophical theories from figures like Socrates, Kant and Nietzsche, to more contemporary thinkers such as Frantz Fanon, Hannah Arendt and Judith Butler. You’ll explore theories about the meaning of life, the nature of reality, who we are as individuals and society, and how these theories have shaped our ideas about humankind. Students choosing this option are supported by a dedicated placement team who provide links to employers through presentations, events, and fairs, and provide a specialist program of guidance on recruitment procedures including CV and interview preparation, as well as work readiness and working overseas.

Our BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Chemistry degree not only offers a firm grounding in general chemistry, research methods and laboratory techniques, but also provides the specialist skills and understanding you’ll need to pursue a future in pharmaceutical chemistry. We’ve developed the course with the pharmaceutical industry in mind – ensuring that our curriculum covers all the skills and strengths that employers demand, and that our placements offer the practical experience on which you can build a career.

You’ll focus on areas like drug testing, drug efficacy, computer-based drug design and the quality control of pharmaceuticals – equipping you for a role in the drug discovery industry.

Our pharmaceutical chemistry degree also provides the option of spending an extra year expanding your horizons, working on a placement in industry. This is subject to national and international travel restrictions.

English is a well-established humanities discipline, which explores the role of the written word in defining and transforming human experience. The modern discipline of English is rooted in the study of literature and the language in which it is written. Students of English can expect to study all major periods and forms of literature and to learn how to analyse literary texts by drawing on disciplines such as history, sociology and politics. The study of English develops strong critical thinking and communication skills, attributes that are highly valued in humanities graduates by employers.
