The Joint Honours BA (Hons) English and Philosophy course route is distinctive because of its richly interdisciplinary approach to key ethical and intellectual challenges. BA (Hons) English and Philosophy is a popular Joint Honours combination which brings together two subjects with highly complementary approaches and interests.

As well as offering a balance of core and optional units rooted in each of the two subjects, this course has been designed so that your growing knowledge and skills in each subject will help you develop a distinctive perspective and distinctive strengths in the other. You may have opportunities to study abroad and, if you wish, can take your third year as a placement – in Britain or abroad. In your final year, you will have a chance to explore your interests in depth with a substantial piece of project work that presents a thesis, building on the knowledge and skills you've been developing over previous years.

The philosophy at Manchester Metropolitan is a centre of internationally recognised research, covering the History of Philosophy, critical social theories, Philosophy of Art, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Education, History and Philosophy of Science, and much more. Designed for qualified doctors, physiotherapists and osteopaths with clinical experience, you’ll study the prevention, diagnosis and management of sport and exercise related medical conditions and injuries.

You’ll choose specialist units that fit with your interests and career aspirations and have the opportunity to gain additional professional accreditation, qualification or membership with external professional bodies. This includes Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME).

The majority of this course is delivered at The Manchester Institute of Health and Performance (MIHP). You’ll have the opportunity to use world-class facilities, such as the environmental chamber, 3D performance capture hall, and the laboratory spaces for specialist exercise testing. You’ll perform practical sessions such as biomechanics and aerobic capacity tests.

You’ll learn theory in seminars, exploring cases and developing the specialist knowledge needed to support your career path into sport and exercise medicine. Topics you might consider include injury diagnosis, nutrition for sports, sports psychology and physiotherapy to help athletes get back into competitions, and performance enhancement.

To ensure our curriculum is relevant, our course theme lead is Prof John Rogers. We also have guest lectures from industry professionals who are experts in their field of practice. Past guest lecturers on this course include Adrian Gardner (Head of Performance at Warrington Wolves Rugby League), Chris Rosimus (Head of Nutrition at The Football Association), John Hartley (First Team Physiotherapist at Aston Villa Football Club) and Aaron Green (Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with English Touch Association).

Designed for registered and qualified physiotherapists, this course gives you the opportunity to develop your knowledge and professional practice across a range of practical and theory-based units.

You'll complete core units of study and choose optional units that are intended to complement different areas of physiotherapy practice, such as musculoskeletal, neurology or a first contact practitioner role.

Practical sessions are an important part of this course and, depending on the units you choose, you’ll learn techniques such as soft tissue manipulation and manual therapy techniques.

Most study will take place on-campus. However, for example, when studying the sports units, you may study at the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance (MIHP). Our lecturers are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and many still work in practice alongside teaching. Our teaching team also includes researchers with expertise across a range of specialisms, including knee and spinal dysfunctions, shoulder management, musculoskeletal and physical activity interventions, rehabilitation for older people and stroke rehabilitation.

This course is at the forefront of production design and manufacturing practices and brings together students from creative and technical backgrounds, to foster original approaches to product design for manufacture. It supports you to explore and develop personal design methodologies and philosophies, and locate these within a deep understanding of historical, contemporary and future design practices, and wider social and cultural contexts.

You will undertake core units, delivered by production design specialists, consisting of design theory and practice lectures, material and manufacturing workshops, group seminars, individual tutorials, live external projects, and research study trips. Practical design development is supported by extensive hand and machine workshops for wood, metal, ceramics, glass and plastics, and digital workshops for laser cutting and large scale CNC routing.

Optional units facilitate innovative cross-disciplinary opportunities, supporting the development of collaborative working with students from within the material making and manufacturing cluster of MA/MSc/MFA Craft and MA/MSc/MFA Textile, and across the wider postgraduate design community. There are cross-faculty options to study within the faculty of “Science and Engineering”, acquiring advanced 3D CAD skills for industrial production, and utilising the latest advanced 3D printing processes. The Manchester Metropolitan Business School option addresses commercial aspects of design, enabling students to locate their ambitions within a defined financial model.

You will able to explore and challenge all aspects of product design, embracing opportunities for innovation across markets and production levels, from one-off making and batch fabrication, to flexible digital manufacture and high volume industrial production.

The combination of digital and physical technologies that is driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) is changing our world. Our MSc Engineering Project Management offers the opportunity to develop management skills to implement technical strategies in projects across the engineering sector.

This course explores specialist challenges to the key objectives of innovation and sustainability in the delivery of new engineering systems, products, enterprise and services for Industry 4.0.

Throughout this course, you’ll develop specialist skills for the management of multidisciplinary projects along with techniques to manage the operational and developmental phases of product and system life cycles.

Together, this multidisciplinary group will help you to become a rounded professional, ready to apply for engineering management roles in organisations globally.

From early years practitioners, teachers and leaders in education, to local authority, health services and aspiring researchers, our course appeals to a variety of backgrounds and professions. This masters is designed to equip you with the skills to influence and advise on the important decisions we face. It will prepare you for a career as a professional economist in government, international NGOs, the health and pharmaceutical sectors and economic consultancies.

Aimed at those who have studied economics and are looking to focus their knowledge toward practical application, while also open as a conversion course to graduates without a degree in economics. You might already be working in local government or devolved administrations and wish to develop your skillset in economic analysis.

You’ll learn from experts in public policy economics. The course reflects the business school’s strength in public policy research and its links with external organisations that use economic advice. If your goal is to pursue a career as an economist and to tackle the problems that affect people’s lives, then this course is for you.

MA English Studies allows you to build your own bespoke masters experience, selecting from a range of units to reflect your interests in the further study of English. Product designers at Manchester Met explore why, examine how, and ask ‘what if?’ We are investigative and critically responsive to human and global needs, developing innovative design-led solutions that connect the consumer experience of products, systems and services. As a product design student, you will be creative with purpose, gaining critical understanding of the emergent issues affecting design across society and culture, learning how to be a designer of products that enhance functionality, interactions and relationships with people and the places we inhabit.

 You will develop essential skills in creative methods, research, design thinking, prototyping and design strategy, applying design intelligence to the creation of new product opportunities and solutions. You will discover how to design products that embrace both traditional and contemporary approaches to production and manufacturing, generating value through the application of materials, processes, and technologies. This course will enable you to produce innovative crafted design solutions and develop the creative and professional skills required to support a sustainable career in product design.

Product Design at Manchester Met builds on the success of our previous programme, BA Three Dimensional Design, which has produced influential and award-winning graduates including designer and architect Thomas Heatherwick, jeweller Ruth Tomlinson and ceramicist Joe Hartley.

A real career journey
You’ll begin with idea generation and business planning, before moving on to strategy, which includes looking at marketing and logistics and supply chain. Plus, learn about the policy, cultural and local environments within which entrepreneurs operate and enterprises thrive. Finally, work on a live business project and pitch your idea to investors before writing up what you’ve learned in the research project.

Every step of the way you’ll learn practical skills you can put to use in your own business.

Optional internship year

If you choose to take the optional one-year internship, you’ll do so once you have successfully completed your taught units. The internship takes place over 36-48 weeks – you will be supported by our Placement Office, who have extensive contacts with the industry and over 25 years of experience of helping students to find placements.

The Placement Office advertise a variety of opportunities, support and advise on the application and recruitment process and continue to support you whilst you are away from the University.
