Internships take place over 36-48 weeks – you will be supported by our Placement Office, who have extensive contacts with local employers and over 25 years of experience of helping students to find placements.

The Placement Office advertise a variety of opportunities, support and advise on the application and recruitment process and continue to support you whilst you are away from the University.

Master of Fine Arts in Textiles

This course rethinks the use, practice and industry of Textiles within the 21st century. It is responsive to an emerging global landscape that requires, sustainable, design-led, innovative positions to be adopted from which to anticipate and forecast our Textile futures.

Manchester and the School of Art have been at the forefront of textiles innovation since the late 19th Century and this course is built on that rich heritage, offering students the opportunity to challenge and innovate in equal measure.

As a student, you will develop innovative study hubs of interdisciplinary expertise, which will both rethink and regenerate textiles within its expanded field (including Textile Craft, Innovation and Digital specialisms). You will address the future paradigms of environmental and social change, new materiality, and the development of 4.0 Textile Industry. Hybrid creative learning environments such as the Manchester Met Digital Lab and specialist Textile facilities support advanced digital learning and making, electronics, 3D printing and multi-media material making practices to be explored.

You will develop individual specialised projects which will become beacons within the expanded field of design. Learning is creative, innovative and interdisciplinary and teaching features design workshops, guest lectures, design events, reading groups, live industry projects and study trips.

Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Our BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Chemistry degree not only offers a firm grounding in general chemistry, research methods and laboratory techniques, but also provides the specialist skills and understanding you’ll need to pursue a future in pharmaceutical chemistry. We’ve developed the course with the pharmaceutical industry in mind – ensuring that our curriculum covers all the skills and strengths that employers demand, and that our placements offer the practical experience on which you can build a career.

You’ll focus on areas like drug testing, drug efficacy, computer-based drug design and the quality control of pharmaceuticals – equipping you for a role in the drug discovery industry.

Our pharmaceutical chemistry degree also provides the option of spending an extra year expanding your horizons, working on a placement in industry. This is subject to national and international travel restrictions.

If you take Spanish as a major or equal subject you will be required to spend your third year abroad in Spain or Latin America. If Spanish is your minor subject, the course will be three years with no study abroad.

If you major in Business all our courses offer four-year placement and exchange routes, where you have the opportunity to spend your third year studying overseas or on industrial placement working for a company, after which you will return to study for your final year. BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Technology has an excellent reputation for producing menswear, womenswear and sportswear graduates who combine design innovation with an in-depth knowledge of the technical aspects of fashion design and manufacturing.

The course reflects contemporary industry standards and encourages students to design and develop innovative fashion products and ranges using both manual and digital technologies. Students work on live projects with industry partners and also have opportunity to undertake a placement and/or overseas study combined with a year in industry.

Students have the option to graduate with a Menswear, Womenswear or Sportswear award, by selecting specialist units in year two and three, or they can work across multiple specialisms. However, all students are encouraged to direct their learning towards specialized target markets such as luxury, outerwear, denim, tailoring, performance or lifestyle sportswear. The practical aspects of the course are underpinned by the study of the business and cultural contexts of fashion and consideration of sustainable industry practices.

Students work towards an exit portfolio that showcases their creative and technical skills appropriate to their chosen careers. While many graduates enter design roles, the technical aspects of the program also prepare students for other careers such as pattern cutting, fashion innovation and product development.

Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Mental Health Nursing

Our high-tech, high-speed lifestyles and the pressure of constant connection to social media means that mental health and wellbeing is a growing health concern for our society. During this three-year course, you’ll develop the expertise to manage both the physical and psychological needs of patients.

Some of the topics you’ll explore include the ethics of medicine management, recovery approaches, and intervention therapies for substance abuse. You’ll also learn practical skills in conflict resolution, how to manage challenging behaviour, and how to safeguard vulnerable patients.

When you’re on campus, you’ll practice clinical techniques, such as how to manually take a patient’s blood pressure and how to give emergency care in our Clinical Simulation Suite. Here, we create simulations of a patient’s journey from admission to discharge.

All students must demonstrate in their personal statements an understanding of mental health nursing in the UK incorporating the NHS core values and contemporary issues in nursing. You must evidence an understanding of the qualities required to be a nursing professional in the UK in order to be shortlisted for an interview. Our computer games development degree is designed to turn you into a games programmer and designer – from the word go you’ll be hands-on, designing and programming games as you prepare for an exciting career at the cutting-edge of interactive digital content.

In our state-of-the-art facilities, you’ll develop traditional computer science skills, such as programming and maths for computing, as well as specialist games development and design techniques.
