This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to become an autonomous healthcare practitioner, specialising in fitness, exercise-based rehabilitation and musculoskeletal management.

We focus on increasing your critical awareness of the current trends in sport and exercise rehabilitation, and build your confidence in applying these pioneering advancements to the workplace. Sport rehabilitation research is consistently focused on improving athletic performance and reducing injury risk. Therefore our course focuses on building the knowledge and skills to implement rehabilitation programmes that return athletes to optimum fitness.

You will have access to our partner Saracen Rugby's nearby Barnet Copthall Stadium, home of Saracens Rugby Club where you will use our world-class performance laboratories, rehabilitation units and testing facilities. You will also have the opportunity to gain experience in the sport and exercise environment through a work placement.

This three-year apprenticeship programme is ideal to for apprentices employed within local trusts, or healthcare organisations who wish to undertake the BSc Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology) and are supported by an employer to undertake the course as an Apprentice.

This BSc apprenticeship will be delivered across each academic year in designated periods of placement learning and study blocks. This model allows the apprentice to gain the advantages of the University resources and support processes, become integrated as a Middlesex University student, and develop a sense of belonging and cohort identity. Placement periods are assessed within their own area of employment according to the National School of Healthcare Science programme requirements.

The modules are delivered through attendance at University, independent study days and a range of planned placement experiences. As students they will be employed within local Trusts or Healthcare organisations as Cardiac Physiologist Degree Apprentices (CPDAs). In order to meet the National School of Healthcare Science requirements, the apprentice will complete planned practice placements within their place of work.

The apprentice will have access to My Learning at module and programme level, and all resources provided within it. These resources allow them to undertake the required pre and post sessional work within each module.

Whilst in practice, the apprentice's learning and assessment are supported and assessed by an identified mentor, who have prepared for the role by the University, for learning and assessment in practice. A range of practice learning experiences are planned in line with National School of Healthcare Science requirements.

This course is accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science.

Recent developments in DNA sequencing are creating unprecedented opportunities in molecular diagnostics, personal medicine and (infectious) disease prevention. There is a clear need for genomics specialists that can analyse and interpret genome data in a (bio)medical context.

This is an interdisciplinary programme with teaching provided by Life Sciences and Computer Science research active academics as well as other experts in the field. The course is based in our modern facilities at Barnet Copthall Stadium, home of Saracens Rugby Club, so you’ll have access to research labs, as well as conditioning and fitness suites during the 3 years of the programme, and when available to access if social distancing is in place. The equipment you can use includes the UK’s most advanced 3D motion analysis equipment and a DXA scanning body composition machine, plus many more.

Supporting athletes to perform
During this course you’ll develop the skills needed to support athletes to perform at their peak while reducing the risk of injury. You’ll develop your understanding of biomechanical and physiological theories, as well as your psychological skills.

You’ll integrate professional practice into your studies as you complete 50 hours of placements every year. This is a crucial opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge by working with athletes. The availability of placements is subject to cooperating organisations and we are working closely with our partners to ensure we have as many available as possible even during COVID-19. Due to COVID-19, the total number of placement hours required to pass the module may be altered under the guidance of the Accredited Professional Bodies or the University where applicable.
