Our Urban Planning master's provides a core introduction to planning issues, professional and theoretical debates and their application to live cases and places.

Urban Planning is the understanding of the place making processes that underpins places, society and the environment. It's also interdisciplinary, with professionals having an understanding across a range of topics. You'll gain an understanding of the fundamentals required for a successful career in planning or the wider built environment professions.

The Urban Planning master's is fully accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). The Development pathway is partially accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and offers a RICS-accredited route to gain Chartered Surveyors status.

This master's in Urban Planning has five specialist pathways. Choose a pathway to suit your individual needs, background and career aspirations.

You will develop the skills and knowledge required to develop computer game software and you will gain an international perspective on advancements in computer game development.

Explore different aspects of computing science – such as games design, bioinformatics, and security – in your first two years.

You will study specialist modules in Stage 3, such as gaming simulations and computer games development.

Take modules from our MSc degree in Computer Game Engineering in Stage 4 to develop a deep understanding of game engineering.

Our mechanical engineering degrees focus on developing your knowledge and practical skills across a broad range of engineering topics, so you graduate equipped to succeed in any engineering field.

This foundation year will help you build the base knowledge you need to progress to any of our mechanical engineering BEng degrees.

This is a full-time programme of study covering core mechanical engineering topics, including:

• Foundation mathematics
• Applied mechanics
• Material science

Our three-year Film and Media degree focuses on developing your practical skills in documentary film-making alongside an understanding of journalism practice. You’ll also explore media and cultural studies, so you graduate ready for your role in industry.

Your degree is led by our experienced academics and award-winning film-makers. You will develop a range of professional skills to prepare you for your future, such as:

Our Biomedical Genetics MSci Honours degree focuses on developing your scientific and experimental skills and equips you with the advanced knowledge you'll need to ensure you graduate fully prepared for your rewarding career in science.

You'll follow the same modules as students on our Biomedical Genetics BSc course, but in your additional fourth year, you'll undertake an extended laboratory-based research project and study modules offered by our research institutes. This three-year degree equips you with the knowledge base and practical skills of a sociologist. You'll be trained to think about the world with a clarity that employers value.

This four-year Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies degree focuses on developing your language skills in Spanish and Portuguese. You're encouraged to explore the rich linguistic, social and cultural diversity of the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America and the Spanish Caribbean.

You will study a range of research-informed modules which cover topics such as social customs, art, music and the survival of indigenous people. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to study Catalan from Stage 2.

You will achieve a high level of Spanish, both written and spoken. You will also build your Portuguese from a beginners' level.

The Cross-Cultural Communication and International Management MA provides theoretical, research and practical training in international and intercultural communication and international business management. 

This master's in Cross-Cultural Communication and International Management celebrates diversity in cultural contexts. It focuses on the skills, competences and knowledge essential in today's global business environment.

The International Management pathway is a specialism of the Cross-Cultural Communication MA. It allows you to study international business management and intercultural communication. It responds to the growing internationalisation of business and management practice. Academic staff from Newcastle University Business School (NUBS) deliver this specialist pathway.

You'll have the opportunity to:

This degree follow the same programme as our Environmental Sciences BSc Honours degree but includes a year's work placement.

Topics cover a wide range of subjects, from plant biology and ecology, to sustainability and environmental law.

Biology and geography are an important part of this degree, to help you to understand the processes within ecosystems and how we can manage our natural resources effectively.

You will also study chemistry, physics and geology as applied to the study of the environment.

You'll learn about the role of social and economic factors, ethics and public perception in environmental management.

Between Stages 2 and 3 you take a year-long work placement in a relevant environmental sector. This gives you the chance to put your learning into practise and gain valuable work experience, helping you stand out in the graduate job market.

BSc or MEnvSci?
Some of our degrees are offered at two levels:

• Three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc)
• Four-year Master in Environmental Science (MEnvSci)

Our MEnvSci degrees include an additional year of advanced study at master’s level, where you will gain additional research and practical experience to increase your employability and have the opportunity to work alongside our world-leading experts.

This International Politics master's investigates central issues of global justice. This includes:

• The debate between relativism and universalism
• The foundation and content of human rights
• Responses to global poverty and inequality
• Cosmopolitan democracy
• Environmental justice

Along with a greater understanding, you'll learn to think critically about these issues.

The course is taught by influential political theorists and philosophers. We offer rigorous training in:

• Global justice and human rights
• International relations theory
• Theories and approaches to the study of politics

This helps you to develop the specialist knowledge and research skills from which to embark upon a career with a significant international dimension. You could also pursue a postgraduate research degree in global justice and ethics studies.
