This three-year joint honours degree focuses on developing your skills and abilities to critically analyse both historical topics and works of literature.

Our Urban Planning master's provides a core introduction to planning issues, professional and theoretical debates and their application to live cases and places.

Urban Planning is the understanding of the place making processes that underpins places, society and the environment. It's also interdisciplinary, with professionals having an understanding across a range of topics. You'll gain an understanding of the fundamentals required for a successful career in planning or the wider built environment professions.

The Urban Planning master's is fully accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). The Development pathway is partially accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and offers a RICS-accredited route to gain Chartered Surveyors status.

This master's in Urban Planning has five specialist pathways. Choose a pathway to suit your individual needs, background and career aspirations.

All our degrees focus on three core areas – pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics – and you have the flexibility to tailor the combination of these to suit your interests.

On this degree, you will select modules evenly across both mathematics and statistics. These include:

• Complex variable
• Statistical inference
• Foundations of probability

You can also choose optional modules linked to the research expertise of our staff and learn about the latest developments in the discipline, such as advanced hydrodynamics, quantum mechanics, and Bayesian inference.

BSc or MMath?
We offer our degrees at two levels:

• Three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees
• Four-year Master of Mathematics (MMath) or Master of Mathematics and Statistics (MMathStat) degrees

Our four-year degrees are more in-depth and include:

• Advanced topics and a wider choice of modules
• A specialist study, tailored to your own interests, that develops your skills in research and communication
• More technical skills, for those who wish to enhance their employability or proceed to postgraduate study

Transfer between the two levels is possible up until the middle of Stage 3.

To qualify for Stages 3 and 4 of the MMath/MMathStat degree, you must normally have obtained at least an upper-second-class average mark in Stages 2 and 3.

The Education pathway is a specialism on the Cross-Cultural Communication MA. You'll combine the study of intercultural communication with the study of education. You'll develop your knowledge of various aspects of education. You'll achieve a reflective but practical understanding of key issues in educational leadership and management.

Academic staff in education from the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences deliver this specialist pathway. It's suitable if you're concerned with educational leadership and management in all sectors of education.

A feature of the pathway is its international dimension. It provides a greater understanding of the comparative context of educational organisations. It also focuses on the latest thinking and research on educational effectiveness and leadership.

Education professionals in all parts of the world need to develop skills and understanding in leadership alongside their knowledge of learning and teaching. At the start of your career you'll benefit from understanding, for example, the management of change. This ensures you meet the demands of new developments in your country's education system.

You'll understand the wider leadership context of a variety of educational system through:

This MEng Engineering course has been designed alongside industry experts to provide you with a broad-based engineering education. You'll gain the depth of understanding and the interdisciplinary skills required to be successful in a number of engineering sectors.

This flexible general engineering degree is taught across Civil, Electrical & Electronic and Mechanical Engineering. You'll study general engineering themes throughout your degree. You'll develop diverse skills relevant to the needs of industry and today’s global challenges.

You'll specialise in one of three streams during the second year of the degree, whilst continuing to develop in-depth knowledge across the following disciplines:

Upon choosing your specialism, you'll also have the option to take a placement year. This will further enhance your learning and employability skills.

Meng
This MEng degree includes an additional year of master's-level study which will deepen your knowledge.

Our MEng degrees are also a direct route to becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng). You don’t need to study any more qualifications after your degree to work towards chartered status.

This accredited Biomedical Sciences degree explores the human body’s function in health and disease. It equips you with specialist knowledge about how diseases occur, and how researchers and clinicians develop new treatments. 

This degree develops your understanding of how the human body functions in health and disease, and ensures you graduate well prepared to make a difference in modern biomedical research and/or medicine.

You can choose to spend up to a year studying at a partner institution overseas. You can even take a summer placement in an overseas research laboratory.

Work placement

Get career ready with a work placement and leave as a confident professional in your field. You can apply to spend 9 to 12 months working in any organisation in the world, and receive University support from our dedicated team to secure your dream placement. Work placements take place between stages 2 and 3.

You'll gain first-hand experience of working in the sector, putting your learning into practice and developing your professional expertise.

If you choose to take a work placement, it will extend your degree by a year. A work placement is not available if you're spending a year studying abroad. Placements are subject to availability.
