You'll investigate global health challenges with a specific focus on your interests.

This degree explores how cell components are formed and interact at a molecular level. You'll develop your understanding of what causes diseases such as cancer, and how powerful new technologies can be used in drug design and synthesis.

Biochemistry is the study of life at the molecular level and this degree mainly focuses on human body functions. You’ll also explore the chemical processes that occur in cells of other living organisms, from bacteria to humans.

Alongside improving your knowledge and skills in molecular biology, biomedical sciences and biotechnology, you'll also learn industry-standard analytical techniques, which are used to discover or design new drugs.

BSc or MSci?

The Cross-Cultural Communication and International Management MA provides theoretical, research and practical training in international and intercultural communication and international business management. 

This master's in Cross-Cultural Communication and International Management celebrates diversity in cultural contexts. It focuses on the skills, competences and knowledge essential in today's global business environment.

The International Management pathway is a specialism of the Cross-Cultural Communication MA. It allows you to study international business management and intercultural communication. It responds to the growing internationalisation of business and management practice. Academic staff from Newcastle University Business School (NUBS) deliver this specialist pathway.

You'll have the opportunity to:

• Evaluate the global activities of business, governments and multi-national institutions
• Diagnose and analyse issues confronting managers in international businesses
• Conduct a marketing audit procedure
• Operationalise and evaluate a marketing plan

Our English Literature MLitt allows you to work around your own research interests. It will prepare you for further research within and beyond academia.

Our MLitt English Literature is an individually tailored research master's degree. It contains some taught modules, some independently conducted research assignments and a larger research dissertation at the end. The topics are chosen by you, in consultation with your supervisor.

Our three-year English Literature BA Honours degree focuses on expanding your knowledge of literary texts and developing critical and theoretical skills. You'll build the firm foundation needed to analyse all forms of literature.

You'll be introduced to a range of texts – across poetry, prose, plays and film – and explore pre-19th-century topics as well as contemporary ones.

You will learn from subject experts, world-leading researchers in literature and internationally acclaimed writers throughout your degree, while having opportunities to practise creative writing, theatre or making films.

You'll become a confident expert analysing literature. You'll study a broad range of optional topics, such as American, postcolonial and children’s literature, from different historical moments including the Renaissance, Romantic, Eighteenth-century and Victorian periods.

This three-year English Literature with Creative Writing BA Honours degree focuses on expanding your knowledge of literary texts, and developing your critical, theoretical and creative writing skills.

You will learn from subject experts, world-leading literature researchers and internationally acclaimed writers throughout your degree. Our teaching is linked to the programme of the Newcastle Centre for Literary Arts, giving you contact with leading creative artists.

You'll be able to immerse yourself in local culture, at venues such as Seven Stories, The Wordsworth Trust and the Literary and Philosophical Society.

You will have opportunities to work with arts organisations such as the on-campus Northern Stage theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company to support your study of creative writing.

This accredited Biomedical Sciences degree explores the human body’s function in health and disease. It equips you with specialist knowledge about how diseases occur, and how researchers and clinicians develop new treatments. 

This degree develops your understanding of how the human body functions in health and disease, and ensures you graduate well prepared to make a difference in modern biomedical research and/or medicine.

You can choose to spend up to a year studying at a partner institution overseas. You can even take a summer placement in an overseas research laboratory.

Work placement

Get career ready with a work placement and leave as a confident professional in your field. You can apply to spend 9 to 12 months working in any organisation in the world, and receive University support from our dedicated team to secure your dream placement. Work placements take place between stages 2 and 3.

You'll gain first-hand experience of working in the sector, putting your learning into practice and developing your professional expertise.

If you choose to take a work placement, it will extend your degree by a year. A work placement is not available if you're spending a year studying abroad. Placements are subject to availability.

The International Marketing pathway is a specialism on the Cross-Cultural Communication MA. It allows you to study international marketing and intercultural communication.

Academic staff in Newcastle University Business School (NUBS) deliver this specialist pathway. You'll gain a thorough understanding of marketing theories. You'll learn how to apply them to real-world business challenges.

The pathway equips you with relevant research techniques. You'll need these to investigate and critically analyse international marketing issues.

This master's also focuses on rapidly developing issues surrounding global communications and brand management. You'll develop knowledge and key skills valued by employers in international marketing and international brand management.

You'll study a broad curriculum covering the theory and practical application of chemical engineering, including how to use industrial apparatus in our very own pilot plant.

In your third year you spend a paid year in industry, gaining invaluable work experience and building industry contacts. You will work in a team of professional engineers and scientists to apply your knowledge to an industrial problem defined by your host company. Your technical skills will be assessed through an industrial design project and you complete selected chemical engineering topics by distance learning.
