Our Biomedical Genetics MSci Honours degree focuses on developing your scientific and experimental skills and equips you with the advanced knowledge you'll need to ensure you graduate fully prepared for your rewarding career in science.

We are a National Centre of Excellence in biomedical research and you will be taught by our world-leading and expert staff, so you will graduate with a cutting-edge knowledge of the industry.

You'll follow the same modules as students on our Biomedical Genetics BSc course, but in your additional fourth year, you'll undertake an extended laboratory-based research project and study modules offered by our research institutes. This allows you to work alongside world-leading experts in our specialist facilities.

Medicinal Chemistry is the discovery, design and synthesis of new clinical drugs.

Our MChem degree follows the normal BSc curriculum, plus a further year of advanced study. The MChem programme is perfect for those pursuing a career within scientific research.

This exciting degree allows you to broaden your interests as you discover the subject. You'll explore the role of chemistry in:

Our professionally accredited Marine Engineering degree provides a pathway to becoming a Chartered Engineer and the expertise to design specialist systems demanding the latest technologies. You'll be prepared to face the challenges of developing advanced alternative power systems that are eco-friendly, ultra-efficient and reliable.

You’ll learn from research-active professors from across the globe, bringing their cutting-edge ideas into the classroom. You'll also benefit from using our specialist facilities.

After learning the fundamentals of marine technology in your first two years, you'll move on to specialist marine engineering modules.

It equips you with the knowledge and skills to apply mathematics and statistics in the business world.

You spend two-thirds of your time studying mathematics and statistics, and have the flexibility to tailor the combination of mathematics and statistics content to suit your interests.

You also spend one-third of your time studying management, with topics including:

• General management theory and practice
• Interpreting company accounts
• Human resource management
• Ethics and corporate governance

Our three-year Journalism, Media and Culture degree focuses on developing your writing, production and communication skills across a range of platforms. You'll be well prepared for a career in a fast-changing media environment as a proactive journalist or media professional.

This hands-on degree programme ensures you develop the practical skills critical in multimedia journalism, as well as an in-depth academic knowledge across all aspects of journalism and media theory.

You'll master the ability to write, produce, and edit both audio and video content for a variety of media.

Your knowledge of the issues and debates in media and cultural studies will be supplemented with a thorough grounding in cultural studies, journalism history, media law and political communications.

You'll become a highly skilled media professional with an in-depth and critical understanding of the roles media and culture play in our society, ready for an exciting career working in journalism and media.

You spend two-thirds of your time studying mathematics and statistics, and one-third studying topics in accountancy and corporate finance in Newcastle University Business School.

Alongside core modules from our mathematics and statistics programmes, you will take specialist topics with financial applications, such as financial modelling.

This is complemented by corporate finance modules, including interpreting company accounts and international finance management.

Chemical Engineering MEng Honours is a four-year degree. It focuses on developing your knowledge and skills across many chemical engineering topics. Its aim is to provide a direct route to becoming a Chartered Chemical Engineer (CEng). This is one of the industry's most recognisable international qualifications.

You'll deepen your knowledge in more advanced topics during your fourth year. You'll specialise in a field that interests you. This enables you to graduate in your chosen specialism tailored to your career of choice. Specialisms include:

The fourth-year also allows you to apply knowledge to an advanced design project.

We work with industry so your studies reflect the real-world challenges engineers face. You'll have hands-on practical learning and optional industry placements. These give you the opportunity to put your theory into practice. You'll and gain invaluable experience in the sector.

BEng or MEng?
Both our BEng degree and specialist MEng degrees provide a pathway to becoming a Chartered Engineer. This is one of the most recognisable international engineering qualifications.

Our MEng degrees are a direct route to becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng). You don’t need to study any more qualifications after your degree to work towards chartered status.

Our three-year BEng degree can also lead to Chartered Engineer status. However, you’ll need to complete further study, such as an approved master’s degree.

Our British History MA is the only master's in history of its kind in the UK. It provides you with the opportunity to study the political, social, economic and cultural history of the British Isles. 

This history master's covers a wide range of British history from early medieval to modern periods. It includes:

• Ideas and influences
• Reform and reaction
• Intensive teaching in the methodologies and concepts used by historians

The course is flexible. You can choose taught modules covering the periods of history and subjects that most interest you.

All our degrees focus on three core areas – pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics – and you have the flexibility to tailor the combination of these to suit your interests.

On this degree, you will select mostly mathematics modules in the later stages. These include:

• Introduction to vector calculus
• Methods for solving differential equations
• Algebra and linear algebra

You can also choose optional modules linked to the research expertise of our staff and learn about the latest developments in the discipline, such as advanced hydrodynamics, quantum mechanics, and Bayesian inference.

BSc or MMath?
We offer our degrees at two levels:

• Three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees
• Four-year Master of Mathematics (MMath) or Master of Mathematics and Statistics (MMathStat) degrees

Our four-year degrees are more in-depth and include:

• Advanced topics and a wider choice of modules
• A specialist study, tailored to your own interests, that develops your skills in research and communication
• More technical skills, for those who wish to enhance their employability or proceed to postgraduate study

The Heritage Studies course covers key aspects of heritage tourism and visitor engagement. It draws on experiences from expert staff and visiting speakers and visits to local heritage sites. It encourages a hands-on approach and involves input by heritage professionals from the region and beyond. Alongside freelance heritage consultants, these professionals work in organisations including:

• Historic England
• the National Trust
• the National Park Authority
• Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums

When you graduate from this course you'll be equipped to pursue a career in the heritage sector or conduct further research.
