Placement Year

The placement year will give you valuable practical experience and is an excellent opportunity to try different careers. It enables you to leave university with a strong CV and may set you apart from other graduates entering the job market. You can take placements in commercial, voluntary or government organisations, or in a research setting.

Mathematics enables us to reason logically, to understand structure and to formulate scientific principles, whether from the physical, life or social sciences.

Choose this course to gain specialist knowledge in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and/or statistics.

At the start of the course, you’ll gain a broad education in pure and applied mathematics, including programming and statistics. All of our courses are flexible and allow for a wide choice of units after year one. You may be able to switch courses during the first year.

Year abroad

• In Year 3 you will spend up to 12 months in a Spanish-speaking country. You'll have the flexibility to choose a work placement, International Academic Exchange or a combination of both. By spending a year abroad, you’ll have the opportunity to master Spanish.

The MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a specialist master's course suitable for anyone working - or aspiring to work - in the field of teaching English as an international language.

You will gain exposure to the latest developments in TESOL research, policy and practice, and work with expert tutors who have taught English around the world and are research active.

Throughout the course, we will challenge your thinking and assumptions about how English is used, taught and learned worldwide. You will analyse its role as the world’s major international language and explore current issues and debates.

Year 1
Your first year includes fundamentals in accounting, finance and economics. You will also develop your skills in topics like law, maths, statistics and computing.

Year 2
Build on Year 1 with more advanced core accounting and finance units. You’ll also study company law and choose from a range of options in business subjects.

Final year
In your final year, optional units will allow you to continue to specialise in accounting and finance and pursue interests in other business areas.

Our course prepares you for a career in an advancing field at the interface of engineering and computing. You'll gain in-depth knowledge of modern computer systems, software engineering, computer graphics and embedded programming to become a systems-level expert.

Placement Year

As an MPhys student, you’ll be able to undertake a research placement in the final year of the course. You’ll spend six months (July to December) working in a research organisation of international standing, before returning to the University for the final semester. We have links with leading research organisations, including CERN, NTT Basic Research Laboratories (Japan), European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (France) and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
