Our course is for engineers who want to apply fundamental mechanical engineering knowledge to the challenges of the automotive industry including areas such as cost, emissions, performance and materials.

Your first two years of study introduce you to the foundations of mechanical engineering. Using physical science, mathematics and computing, you'll learn how to assess engineering systems. You’ll study vehicle design, manufacturing processes and component analysis in the context of the automotive market. A range of specialist units in your final year allows you to choose where you want to advance your knowledge.

Studying an MEng degree gives you an in-depth study experience through advanced taught units and project work, and it fulfils the educational requirements you need to become a Chartered Engineer.

At Bath, you will have the opportunity to experience studio-based projects and gain insight from industrial guest lecturers, preparing you to tackle the range of structural engineering projects you will meet in your career.

We also offer this course with a placement year, giving you the opportunity to gain work experience as part of your degree. You can move between our Civil Engineering and Structural and Architectural Engineering courses, as well as decide whether you want to go on placement, up to the end of your second year.

Placement Year

Going on placement gives you the chance to apply the skills you’ve developed at university to the workplace, and gain complementary skills and knowledge. You’ll gain insight into the construction industry and develop your confidence and standing as an engineer. Having professional experience can benefit the rest of your degree and improve your career prospects. Our students have worked at small and large, internationally known companies including Arup, Atkins, Buro Happold, Ramboll, WSP and AKT II.

This course is for those who want an understanding of the tools and key theories within economics and mathematics. You'll use these skills to analyse contemporary problems and policy. On this course, you’ll study the core elements of economics, including microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory and econometrics.

You will develop methodological and statistical tools for the analysis of complex data. Throughout your studies, you will be immersed in a wide variety of quantitative topics. This will enable you to develop and apply your advanced mathematical skills.

In your first year you'll study key concepts in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, and develop your skills in mathematical and statistical theory and applications.

In your second year you'll continue with more advanced study of economic theory, mathematics and statistics. You'll acquire a deep understanding of economic relationships.

In your final year, you'll study topics and techniques in advanced economic theory and mathematics to critique and contribute to current debates. You can tailor your choice of optional units to your personal interests

Placement Year

Taking a placement in your third year enables you to use the theory you have learnt in a practical context. You will learn about an organization and its area of work in the UK or overseas. This is an excellent opportunity to test potential career paths. Sometimes permanent jobs are offered to our students. You’ll develop skills such as teamwork, planning, problem-solving, decision making and project management.

Employers value a year of professional work and you’ll gain an advantage in the job market. Sometimes it is possible for you to acquire additional professional qualifications, particularly in accountancy, whilst on placement.

Year abroad

On this course you'll combine a work placement with studying at a university overseas. Broaden your horizons and experience another culture whilst studying a course that complements your studies at Bath.

Study abroad locations include the National University of Singapore and Stellenbosch University (South Africa), as well as others. We seek to further expand on these. Study abroad opportunities are limited and are subject to availability at our partner institutions.

This is a flexible degree with optional units to choose from after Year 1. In your first year, you’ll study with International Management and Management with Marketing students. You’ll benefit from learning in a diverse class with students who have different backgrounds and ambitions.

Year 1
You’ll learn the core subjects relevant for business like marketing, finance and operations management. These will provide context for the rest of your course. Areas of study will also cover topics such as business analytics, the international business environment and managing people.

Year 2

Final year

As part of this MSc, you will gain an up-to-date knowledge of clinical psychology theory and practice, including research. Your knowledge of materials and the assembly of building elements will help inform how you approach design. Working with civil engineering students develops your understanding of the technical aspects of designing structures. This cross-discipline teamwork gives you an insight into the design problems and professional relationships you could experience in your career.

Your study experience at Bath will be distinct from that offered by most other universities in the UK. You’ll go on two placements (lasting between three to six months) as part of your four-year degree to help you on your journey to becoming a qualified Architect. You could also have the opportunity to study abroad as part of a student exchange agreement.

Placement Year

We blend architectural studies with professional experience to help you get the best out of your degree. Our course integrates two placements (lasting between three to six months) into the second semesters of year 2 and year 3, making it easier for you to develop and transfer your skills between study and placement. You'll be able to apply your university learning in a practical context and use your placement experience to improve the architectural skills you’ll use later in your course.

Our students benefit from work experience gained in many of the leading architectural practices in the UK and other countries. You could go on placement in practices like FCB Studios, Foster and Partners, Grimshaw Architects or Roger Stirk Harbour + Partners.
