This is borne out in The UK Government’s ‘Industrial Strategy – Building a Britain fit for the future', which calls for a new type of university graduate and manager: one who can operate successfully at the interface of economics, business, mathematics and computer science.

Drawing on the extensive expertise from across the Departments of Economics, Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences, and the School of Management, this MSc sets out to educate and prepare economically literate scientists, and scientifically confident economists, for the future.

The course has a strong quantitative focus, while also covering other relevant areas such as computer programming, software development and econometrics. You will learn to apply economic and mathematical units and programs to real business problems, while building a compelling set of skills in areas such as data analysis, data mining, software applications and statistics.

The cross-disciplinary nature of the course makes it noticeably different from other economics master’s course. You will be taught by subject specialists in each field, allowing you to study each topic in greater depth. At the start of the course, you’ll gain a broad education in pure and applied mathematics, including programming and statistics. Vital in addressing global health and environmental challenges, biochemistry explores the chemical processes of living organisms at a molecular level.

Combine your interests in biology and chemistry by applying chemical knowledge and techniques to study biological processes. You’ll learn what’s happening inside cells, how they communicate with each other, and use this to predict how molecules will interact.

Tailor to your interests

In year one you’ll gain a broad grounding in biosciences to help work out where your interests lie. Then from year two, you'll choose optional units in specific areas, such as developmental biology, genomics, neuroscience, cancer biology and microbiology.

And to keep your options open further, you'll even have the flexibility to switch between our biology and biochemistry courses after the first year.

Placement Year

Gain a broad education in chemistry and business ready for careers in science or management.

This course allows you to combine your love of chemistry with an interest in how business works. You’ll gain a broad education in chemistry with an understanding of the theories of chemical behaviour and how they're applied. You'll also develop skills in experimental chemistry and in designing experiments to test hypothesis.

At least a quarter of the units you’ll study will be management topics, delivered by the School of Management. You’ll develop an understanding of the social, legal and economic implications of the decisions managers in industry are required to make.

This course is for you if you enjoy and excel at pure mathematics and want to apply that to the study of physics from subatomic particles to the formation of new galaxies. You’ll get to understand the rigour and application of mathematics and how it underpins our study of the physical world.

Develop your knowledge of biomechanics, physiology and psychology. You will understand how humans function in sport, physical activity and health environments.

This degree has three core strands running throughout the course:

• Biomechanics will explore how humans create and control movement including athletes’ technique
• Physiology will cover the structure, function, regulation and performance of bodily systems
• Psychology will examine the role of thoughts, feelings and behaviours in sport and exercise settings

Through these core disciplines you'll apply your knowledge to sports performance and exercise participation and understand the relevance of sport and exercise science to current practice.

Year Abroad

On this course you'll combine a work placement with studying at a university overseas. Your international experience will enhance your skills and prepare you for employment in the competitive global graduate market.

The study abroad option is currently available in Technical University of Munich (Germany) and Southern Cross University (Australia), and we continuously seek new partners to widen our study abroad offer.

Start a new language or achieve fluency in a language you’ve already studied. Gain the skills to understand the international political environment.

This degree enables you to combine the study of a language at either ab initio (beginner) or advanced level with the study of international politics. In the course, the language and politics strands carry equal weighting. You will gain a strong competence in both your chosen language and in relevant issues of international politics.

You can choose your language of study from either advanced French, German or Spanish (intended for those who have studied to A level standard) or any beginner language (which you do not need to have studied before): French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Russian or Spanish.

Year abroad

This course includes a compulsory year abroad when you will spend time in a country of your chosen language. You could spend your time on a study placement at a foreign university, as a language assistant in a school, or on a work placement. Our course takes you beyond the conventional engineering difficulties of designing equipment for use on Earth’s surface. Instead, you’ll develop the skills needed to design and build systems and platforms for the hostile environment of space.

Your first two years develop your understanding of electrical engineering science before specialising in electronics and communications technologies with elements of space and planetary science.
