Overview
The joint honours English and Italian degree allows you to study two complementary disciplines, both of which ask you to think carefully about culture and history and to pay close attention to detail while comprehending and analysing language.
Students on this course will join two departments with top researchers in a great diversity of fields and will be encouraged to develop expertise and research skills relevant to both disciplines while also considering the relationships between them.
You will explore a rich variety of texts in their social, political and historical contexts and will develop excellent critical and communication skills, both in English and in Italian. You will also have opportunities to study aspects of history, film and linguistics as part of your Italian program.
You will spend a mandatory year abroad in an Italian-speaking environment to improve your language skills and global citizenship. You will develop excellent critical and communication skills that will prepare you for a wide range of professions.
You will also complete a dissertation during your final year – a project that will ask you to bring together the skills you have developed while studying both disciplines.

This four-year course allows you to explore high-level mathematics at the leading edge of research. Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literatures and Cultures
BA Comparative Literatures and Cultures offers an exciting opportunity to study a wealth of international cultural production in depth and breadth.
You will study the literatures and cultures of the world in comparative frameworks that draw on methodologies from textual, cultural and visual studies, as well as from translation, philosophy, history, social science and critical theory. Texts will be read in English translation.
In the first two years you will study core units such as: What is Comparative Literature and How Do We Practise It?; Introduction to Visual Cultures; Popular Representation and Institutions of Culture; and Migrations of Culture.
In year three you will complete an innovative, supervised, independent project consisting of an extended essay on a topic of your choice and a public-facing element presented to the entire cohort e.g. prospectus, interview, catalogue, teaching materials.
Additionally, you will have a wide choice of optional units based in either the culture of a single language or a combination of cultures. Units are informed by staff research interests and you will be taught by experts in their fields.
Teaching is delivered through lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and one-to-one project supervision. Assessments may include presentations, essays, commentaries, exams, collaborative projects, debates, case study explorations, reports and dissertations.

This course allows you to combine two historically interlinked disciplines and develop a breadth of skills across both economics and philosophy.
The economics part of the course is technically rigorous and will build your analytical skills. There are mandatory units in macro- and microeconomics, mathematics, statistics and econometrics (the application of statistical methods to data to estimate economic models). This interdisciplinary MSc programme is for students who are passionate about early life, mass extinctions, macroevolution, climate change and fossil preservation. It bridges the biology-geology divide. You will learn the latest techniques in phylogenetics, biomechanics and macroevolution, providing you with a strong foundation for independent research to PhD level or for a career in museum curation, science education, science policy, management or the media.
You will join Bristol's established palaeobiology research group and engage in current debates in evolution, systematics and palaeobiology. You will learn how to analyse problems quantitatively and design experimental approaches to resolving questions in macroevolution and the study of both ancient and living organisms.
A key aspect of the programme is preparing your research project for publication, and many of our previous students’ projects have been published in leading international journals. Recent research project topics include the origin of cellular life, the preservation of colours in dinosaurs and the evolution of culture in humans.
This programme gives you the opportunity to develop a wide range of professional skills, including research planning, problem-solving and communication. You will learn to present palaeontological data through talks, visual displays and formal written reports.
