Develop an understanding of the evolution of life on this planet through the study of geology and biology. Our degrees are interdisciplinary and provide you with a broad background in palaeobiological science, including state-of-the-art methods and technological advances.

Learn from experts with interests ranging from dinosaurs to plants to the origin of life and be fully immersed in hands-on palaeontology from the start.

One third of the first year is dedicated to biology and two thirds to earth science. After the first year you will take core units from both disciplines. In the third year you will carry out a research project, take a range of specialist palaeontology units and select from a range of optional units to pursue your own interests.

Current units include: Marine Micropalaeontology, where you will use microfossils to reconstruct past climates; Macroevolution, where you will learn techniques for analysing the large-scale patterns in evolution; and Vertebrate Palaeobiology and Biomechanics.

Our MSci course allows you to study more advanced material in greater depth during the additional year, giving you a career boost by investing in your skills development or preparing you for further research.

Our emphasis on quantitative research allows you to develop valuable mathematical and statistical skills. There are also opportunities for volunteer work and internships in our state-of-the-art palaeobiology laboratories.

You will learn how to understand, in depth, the computational and statistical principles of modern data science and be skilled at the rigorous and ethical application of these techniques to real-world challenges.

This MSc aims to:

• Equip you with the ability to work across disciplinary boundaries in the effective application and deployment of data-intensive solutions in a variety of contexts.
• Give graduates a breadth and depth of knowledge and skills in computational, machine learning, and statistical principles and the capability for insightful large-scale data analysis, so you will be able to specify and implement analytical pipelines for real-world data at scale.
• Provide you with a good understanding of the ethical issues in the application of contemporary data science techniques to real-world challenges so you can be conversant with arguments concerning the risks and potential benefits and disadvantages arising from the deployment of these technologies.
• Enable you to independently initiate data science projects specified at a high-level perspective, leading them from scoping onward to completion, while exercising appropriate project management methods and maintaining stakeholder engagement.

The MSc in Data Science has been co-designed with industrial partners and is highly relevant to rewarding employment opportunities. There is a strong emphasis on responsible innovation and ethics to encourage you to use your knowledge and skills for societal good in the workplace or through further research. The course is closely associated with excellent research in the University, ensuring leading edge teaching. 

MSci Chemistry with Industrial Experience will deepen your understanding of the subject and prepare you for a variety of career options, especially in the chemical industry. It is also a good pathway into postgraduate study.

The first two years are common to all of our degree courses. You will study fundamental concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry and applications in areas such as analytical, environmental, materials and theoretical chemistry.

You will develop your ability to design experiments and interpret results and learn key skills through our chemistry-specific communications and mathematics units.

In your third year you will gain invaluable experience in industry working in a paid position for a major chemical company. Our students have worked for AstraZeneca, Bayer Crop Science, Croda, GlaxoSmithKline and Johnson Matthey in recent years.

Working in industry will allow you to develop real-world expertise and specialise in an area of science that you find interesting. The transferable skills that you gain will prove invaluable in helping to shape your future career.

Your final year includes a 20-week research project in which you will work with an academic member of staff and their research team on a current challenge in chemistry.

This five-year degree comprises clinical activity with integrated scientific and technical teaching. With a strong core of clinical work throughout, theory, science, clinical skills, personal and professional development and teamwork are integrated at the relevant levels.

Year one introduces the clinical environment through peer group activities and observations. Clinical skills training and patient contact commence early in year two.

Later in the program, you can choose to intercalate in a science subject to obtain an Honours BA or BSc. There is the opportunity to undertake community work in the UK or abroad during your elective in year four.

The program structure is helical, with four main themes of development: Practitioner, Scholar and scientist, Professional and Agent of Change, Person and Citizen. You will be introduced to basic concepts in the healthy patient before progressing to apply your knowledge and skills to treat an increasingly complex range of oral diseases.

You will begin your dental practice in the Bristol Dental Hospital before extending your practice to community teaching clinics in the city. Here you will treat patients with a wide variety of dental diseases in a primary care setting in preparation for dental practice beyond graduation.

We urgently need new technologies for understanding, preventing, diagnosing, and managing illnesses that affect millions of people, such as diabetes, depression and dementia.  The Digital Health industry is expected to grow six times in size over the next 5 years, at a rate of nearly 30% a year. Driven by the risk of future pandemics and the health needs of ageing populations in countries worldwide, this growth is expected to continue for decades to come.

The demand for graduates in this area is therefore unprecedented. If you have a first degree in a Health Science, Computer Science, Life Science, Maths or Engineering subject, we want to help you develop as a leader in this area.  

Our MSc in Digital Health provides you with the necessary technological expertise and understanding of the health landscape to forge a career in this innovative and vital field. The MSc Business Analytics is a one-year specialist program for graduates with a bachelor’s degree with a substantial quantitative component, and highly qualified graduates from other backgrounds with demonstrable advanced quantitative skills. It will suit graduates or early career professionals who wish to pursue a career in business analytics across sectors including digital marketing, human resources, logistics, retail, banking, insurance and healthcare.

The MSc Business Analytics will equip students with the skills and ability to develop actionable insights on customer behaviour, market trends, and business opportunities based on data and statistical methods. Students will also gain an understanding of the strategic value and managerial implications of business analytics, in line with a socially responsible and ethical use of data.

You will learn statistical and machine learning techniques for data mining and forecasting, social media/web analytics, modelling analytics for data-driven decision making, linked to practice and theory.

You will gain a critical understanding of organisational, societal, and ethical issues in the use of business analytics in decision making and the development of data-driven business solutions.

We will give you the opportunity to apply knowledge and techniques learned in the program to real-life business problems, building your communication, research and analytical skills. Where possible, projects will be run in partnership with IBM and other business and third sector organisations.
