At Southampton, English is an interdisciplinary course. You’ll see how literature connects with areas such as film, science, performance and politics. You can study everything from medieval travellers’ tales to modern fictions of globalisation.

You’ll have the opportunity to study abroad, spending a semester, a summer or even a full year at one of our global partner universities.

Learn German - a major international language with over 100 million speakers worldwide - while increasing your knowledge of politics. You’ll study abroad for a year to get complete proficiency in German and also take modules on political systems and German history.

On this BA Politics and German degree you'll start German at a level that matches your spoken and written ability to ensure rapid progress. You’ll also have excellent resources to support you. The Centre for Language Study at Southampton has everything you need.

A special module in year 2 will make sure you’re ready for working and studying abroad in year 3.

Learn the history and theory of film and gain a global perspective on cinema on this MA Film Studies master's degree at the University of Southampton. On this joint BA Philosophy and Music degree you’ll study some of the biggest questions in philosophy and develop skills in musical performance, composition and analysis. You’ll have the freedom to work on your own interests through optional modules covering varied topics. These include existentialism, studio techniques and nineteenth century Italian opera. You'll also get to spend a placement year abroad.

In your degree you can:

• Develop an understanding of philosophical questions such as ethics, reason and responsibility
• Study a range of music from European music in the Renaissance and Baroque periods through the music of the twentieth century and global hip hop

Learn about the ancient world and find ways to understand the foundations of how we live today. On BA Ancient History and Archaeology, you'll develop specialist knowledge in your chosen areas of study and learn in an engaging and supportive research environment. The complementary subject of archaeology is the study of the human past through its material remains. These include buildings, monuments, artefacts, biological remains, written sources and landscape. On this ancient history and archaeology degree you can:

• Learn from experts in the ancient world (including history, archaeology, ancient and modern languages and literatures, philosophy and film)
• Use cutting-edge technology to discover and map new sites, or develop research skills
• Do at least 3 weeks of field work, including excavating archaeological sites or collecting archaeological material from ploughed fields
• Challenge yourself by learning Latin and Ancient Greek

In your year abroad you could choose to go to Spain, France, Switzerland or Latin America - we have links in Chile, Colombia and Mexico. Through our innovative scheme in Mexico, developed in partnership with the Mexican Education Ministry, you could work as a Language Resources Assistant in a University.

Examine the fundamentals of language, and study issues in teaching methodology, on this MA Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching master's degree.

The MA Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching is offered by our Centre for Applied Language Research. Staff contributing to the programme are involved in:

Explore the processes that lie beneath social change and the ideas and ideals that drive them. On this joint BA Philosophy and Sociology course you'll gain a grounding in the twin disciplines of philosophy and sociology, while having the freedom to pursue your own interests in greater depth. Optional topics cover everything from gender and human rights to criminal justice and the philosophy of religion.

This degree will give you an excellent education in philosophy and sociology. In your degree you can:

On this Spanish and History degree, you’ll discover the Spanish language, its history and society. You'll gain skills to critically engage with Spanish cultures.
