History

• Studying history – the story of humanity through the ages – develops your knowledge of the past and gives you a better understanding of the present.

• Our classes cover some of the most important and interesting historical periods at home and abroad, including Scotland’s ‘Highland Problem’ in the 16th century, Slavery in World History and Cold War Europe, 1945-1991.

Journalism, Media & Communication

• Today’s media industry expands beyond traditional print and broadcast journalism. It includes professional bloggers and vloggers, freelance writers and editors, podcasters, people working in entertainment TV, radio, or film, creators of video games and interactive apps, promoters of ideas and products, and many others.
• The most successful professionals in today’s media are not only highly skilled in reporting, writing, editing and pitching their material, but they are also excellent communicators online and offline, and problem-solvers. They are innovative and entrepreneurial, bold and curious, open-minded and collaborative. These are also some of Strathclyde’s core values, which guide our own teaching, research, and public engagement.
• Pursuing the BA in Journalism, Media and Communication will engage you in useful learning in a broad professional context, which includes a critical understanding of the media industry, while acquiring technical and professional skills in journalism, communication, information design and management, and using them in the dynamic media market of Glasgow and beyond. It will also allow you to take a second subject, which will enhance your expertise and university experience even further.

This joint degree is offered in partnership with the Department of Mathematics & Statistics.

You’ll develop mathematical and statistical expertise at the same time as increasing your skills in the largest business school in Scotland. There’s strong emphasis on statistical techniques in data analysis and on the use of mathematical models.

Employers in the financial sector look for graduates who have experience using mathematical models, as well as a financial background. This course provides a good basis for entering the actuarial profession.

There are a number of ways you can study Law at Strathclyde, one such way being the BA degree in combination with another subject. Law is concerned with the study of the obligations, duties and rights which every member of society has in relation to one another and to the state. Please note that studying Law within the BA degree will not qualify you for entry to the legal profession. For professional qualifications in Law students follow the LLB programme. The study of Law is regarded not as purely vocational, but part of a broader education.

The postgraduate taught Masters degree is a modular conversion course which provides broad training in biomedical engineering to help you progress with a career in research, industry or in the NHS.

The programme explores advances in technology and engineering to generate applications and solutions to clinically relevant problems.

If you wish to pursue a career in the charitable, education, government or civil service or the heritage sectors then this course is ideally suited to you. It will also appeal to those who may already be working within an organisation with a strong interest in gender in society.

For those who are interested in pursuing a more research-focused option the MSc Applied Gender Studies can also be taken as a Research Methods route. This allows graduates to meet the criteria for ESRC funding, an important factor if you plan to go on to PhD study in the Social Sciences.

Pharmacology is the study of how drugs and other chemicals affect the body in health and disease. This area explores the development of new and improved medicines and the treatment of disease.

Microbiology is the study of the smallest living organisms (micro-organisms or microbes) and includes viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa. Microbes are a major cause of disease in humans but they can also be useful in industrial processes from pollution control to the production of important therapeutic compounds.

The opportunity to choose specific degree combinations will allow you to go into specialist biomedical science areas such as neuroscience, cardiovascular research, immunopharmacology, industrial immunology, drug research, biochemistry, microbiology and bacteriology.

As a politics student, you'll look at the work of governments and their policies and study the behaviour of those who govern - and who they are governing - both at home and abroad. You'll also gain knowledge of domestic and international institutions and issues relating to conflict and cooperation. We cover diverse and relevant issues, such as international terrorism to the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum. Politics graduates can go on to work in a number of areas, with many pursuing academic research careers in the UK, Europe and North America.
