The MSc in Data Science for Politics & Policymaking is designed to meet the growing demand for graduates with the ability to use big data to solve complex political and social problems. This Masters-level course equips you with the ability to design, commission, and implement projects that capture and analyse large quantities of online data from a diverse set of sources. The course looks to solve the key challenge of the use of big data in the public sphere, the lack of specified research and policy goals, by providing you with the know-how via core classes in Research Design, Public Policy and Qualitative Methods. This is a very topical area of study, with health concerns related to physical inactivity a growing cause for concern. With a broad range of physical activity and sport topics from which to study, we equip you with the knowledge and skills to make a positive impact in this field.

As a politics student, you'll look at the work of governments and their policies and study the behaviour of those who govern - and who they are governing - both at home and abroad. The course has a strong focus on technical aspects of energy systems as well as entrepreneurship. The project work provides opportunities for the research and development of ideas. Typical classes that are part of the programme inclue:

All students take part in a research project to explore a practical problem related to the energy sector. The compulsory MSc project can be carried out at an employer’s site.

For those who are interested in pursuing a more research-focused option the MSc Applied Gender Studies can also be taken as a Research Methods route. This allows graduates to meet the criteria for ESRC funding, an important factor if you plan to go on to PhD study in the Social Sciences.

Combining education with other subjects provides opportunities for those who wish to work in professions associated with education, but who don't wish necessarily to become teachers. Please note that this course doesn't allow you to qualify as a teacher, though joint honours Education graduates will be able to explore postgraduate routes into teaching careers (via the Professional Graduate Diploma in Education).

Our BA degrees in Humanities & Social Sciences are initially broad-based. In Year 1, you'll study three subjects, including your chosen subject(s).

The course gives you an international perspective on the theory and practice of accounting. You will study financial management and securities markets. There is a particular focus on the move towards harmonisation with international accounting standards and the impact of leading standard-setting authorities.

Social Policy examines the ways in which societies distribute resources and develop services to meet individual and social needs. Key social policy issues examined include poverty; economic, race, age and gender inequality; social justice health; education; criminal justice and housing.

It utilises a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to improve our understanding of how societies organise their resources to meet individual and social needs and how they measure progress in these areas. 

This programme gives you the opportunity to learn more about the social and economic challenges facing Scottish society and place these in a broader international perspective. It draws on disciplines such as history, sociology, anthropology, economics, law, psychology, social anthropology and politics.

Choosing Psychology as your second subject, you would be undertaking a 5-star course as rated by QS. Our main focus in psychology is the study of human behaviour. Studying with us, you'll look at conditions of behaviour – how we learn, remember, co-ordinate our actions and interact with others – and the reasons for differences between individuals, such as personality or intelligence. Due to the popularity of the course, performance-related criteria are in place to manage entry into Honours (Year 4); this means the numbers admitted to Years 2 and 3 of the course are limited and dependent on performance.

Pursuing this joint degree will give you a critical understanding of the media industry. You'll acquire technical and professional skills in journalism, communication, information design and management, and you'll use them in the dynamic media market of Glasgow and beyond. For many, the perfect way to combine a passion for sport and technology is through a career in sports engineering.

Sports Design Engineering concentrates on the conception, design and manufacturing of sporting equipment. Sports engineers work in nearly every sport, creating designs that meet specialised specifications to improve athlete performance, safety and sports product durability. 

For example, sports engineers could be involved with projects as diverse as designing new high specification football boots or fitness monitoring and improvement products, match and playing surface analysis equipment to developing image processing algorithms which act as analytical tools to determine strategic instances in a game.

The background our students gain in biomechanics also makes careers in medical device development and design a viable career route which is an exciting area due to the new and emerging sports and widening participation in sports for example prosthetics and guidance for partially sighted.

A sports engineer requires expertise in many technical skills; from engineering design to understanding biomechanics of human movement, technology concepts to production techniques. This is integrated with manufacturing processes, CAD, rapid prototyping and digital prototyping technologies, software and practical skills to turn the design and production process into reality which is fundamental to global market success.
