Electronic systems are important to nearly every aspect of our lives. Spectacular advances in technology, design and development allow increasing capabilities to be put into ever-smaller electronic devices.

Just think about your mobile – a smart phone that can now make calls, take and send pictures, give you ultra-fast wireless internet access wherever you are and download, play and store 1000s of albums. It may even have specialist security features like fingerprint identity sensors and voice-activated operating systems. But your smartphone is much more than that. For example:

  • It can be used in sports development to monitor specific fitness parameters and help athletes improve their performance levels
  • It can be used in healthcare to help with diagnosis using software to allow doctors to gather, monitor and assess clinical data while patients are at home

These are just a couple of examples that showcase the impact and relevance of electronic systems. New approaches within optical computing and nanotechnology provide the potential for even greater advances.

Our main focus in psychology is the study of human behaviour. Due to the popularity of the course, performance-related criteria are in place to manage entry into Honours (Year 4); this means the numbers admitted to Years 2 and 3 of the course are limited and dependent on performance.

Education is essential if you're hoping to study initial teacher education courses. We offer you the chance to develop knowledge of the education systems of Scotland and beyond, looking at issues including policy, social justice, equity and inclusion.

Combining education with other subjects provides opportunities for those who wish to work in professions associated with education, but who don't wish necessarily to become teachers. Please note that this course doesn't allow you to qualify as a teacher, though joint honours Education graduates will be able to explore postgraduate routes into teaching careers (via the Professional Graduate Diploma in Education).

Study with us

  • Learn about formal and informal education in relation to political and social issues
  • You'll look at conditions of behaviour – how we learn, remember, co-ordinate our actions and interact with others – and the reasons for differences between individuals, such as personality or intelligence
  • Our BA degrees in Humanities & Social Sciences are initially broad-based. In Year 1, you'll study three subjects, including your chosen subject(s)

Mathematics is everywhere: weather forecasting, cash machines, secure websites, electronic games, liquid crystal displays and statistical data analysis.

Physics is used to help us answer some of the important questions which arise in the world around us. Once we understand the processes involved in these problems, we need to translate our ideas into mathematics to find the solutions.

Our flexible degree structure enables transfer between courses with the opportunity to study abroad.

Study with us

  • Learn how to combine maths and physics to help identify and find solutions to important problems in the world
  • Develop knowledge of mathematical analysis, mechanics, waves and optics, electromagnetism, quantum physics and numerical analysis
  • Accredited by the Institute of Physics
  • Benefit from flexibility to transfer between courses
  • Opportunity to study abroad. Option to undertake final-year project in either subject
