Why study the film and television industries?

There has never been a more exciting time to study the screen industries. The UK's screen industries are booming. Streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon are investing huge sums in original drama and documentary. This is transforming the way programmes are commissioned and how they reach audiences, and has major implications for the production, distribution and exhibition of both commercial and independent film and television. These changes pose a range of new opportunities as well as unprecedented challenges for audiences and industry professionals alike.

This MA Film and Television Industries course equips students with cutting-edge knowledge of the key drivers of change in the film and television industries. You'll study new and emerging structures and business practices, and learn how leading industry professionals are navigating the changes across finance, production, distribution, marketing and exhibition. You'll also gain the entrepreneurial skills needed to set up a screen business of your own, whichever sector you wish to work in. For those interested in pursuing PhD research, the course also provides the knowledge and skills required to study at that level, or to pursue a teaching career.

 Every student is placed within one of our partner institutions alongside a curator who will mentor the student through the year. Our industry partners are all renowned creative and cultural organizations.
This well-connected degree is for those wishing to explore curating and develop curatorial skills in one or more of the following areas: fine art, digital media, film, festivals and social history.

The course attracts a broad range of students from the UK, Europe and beyond, and is an exciting mixing pot for creative ideas and collaborative experience.
This creative and experimental MA in Graphic Arts brings together graphic designers, illustrators, and individuals from related industries to engage with communication design practice at a deeper level. You will research, investigate and debate the nature and dynamics of communication, and explore how they can produce meaningful outcomes using conventional and unconventional forms.

You will develop your design process: from creative strategies for generating ideas; gathering and analysing information; producing text; to producing final outcomes to industry standards. Skills development is embedded throughout and a vital re-skilling stage, a series of technical workshops delivered by experienced technical staff, ensures you are up-to-date and industry-ready.

Where can it take me?

• You'll develop the skills to work on documentaries, feature films, TV and new platforms, as a production manager, line producer or production assistant.
• You could go into areas such as finance, distribution or exhibition in an established screen business, or set up your own start-up. Or progress onto further research or teaching.

Work with experienced journalists to build your skills and experience, and channel your passion for long-form writing into a successful portfolio journalism career.

• In today's fast-paced digital age, journalists need the versatility and skillset to create high-quality features across diverse platforms.
• As a features writer, you could be working on long-form pieces for websites, newspapers, magazines or podcasts, focusing on a specialist subject or type of feature writing, or taking on more diverse business-to-business work.

• You'll be in a position to take on work on a freelance or staff basis with magazines (both specialist and business-to-business), or to write for online channels such as websites or podcasts.
• It's up to you if you want to specialise in a particular subject or type of feature writing, or use your skills to secure writing work across different fields.

This course is affiliated with the leading professional body for photographers in the UK and beyond, the Association of Photographers.

• Our graduates work in fields from editorial and fashion to movie stills and medical photography. Employers include the BBC, Sunday Times Magazine and the Tate.  
• Past students have assisted photographers such as Steve McCurry, Zed Nelson and Tim Walker, and have been published and exhibited in FT Weekend, Vogue Italia, Oh Comely, The Photographers Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and the Tate.
• Graduates have also established important collectives and exhibiting networks such as The Lost Light Recordings, Loupe Magazine and Splash and Grab.
• Some graduates go on to further study at Master's level, including our own postgraduate MA Photography programme

This exciting and unique Master's degree, accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC), and co-designed by UWE academics and BBC journalists offers a practice-based, multi-media approach to news, current affairs and investigative journalism.
We aim to produce graduates with skills and understanding suitable for entry-level posts in all aspects of multi-media journalism content production including print, broadcast and web media.

We welcome recent graduates, media professionals wishing to update their investigative, writing and critical analysis skills, and those from other professions seeking a career change. Applicants must have previous journalism/writing experience and be able to demonstrate a passion to produce fair and accurate journalism that has impact.
