This History and Philosophy degree will give you a broad understanding of forces that shape societies and cultures, and of the issues involved in critical philosophical thought.

Historians look to understand past societies and analyse processes of historical change. Philosophers dissect world views and understand the past in relation to the present. The MA in Women’s Studies (Humanities) is a tailored programme for those with a particular interest in humanities-informed approaches to interdisciplinary women’s and gender studies.

You'll address a diverse range of theoretical and methodological approaches to women's and gender studies, developing a critical awareness of the gendered aspects of cultural life, representation and textual enquiry.

You will have the opportunity to focus on a variety of cultural perspectives and practices – literary, visual, and artistic – from both contemporary and historical cultures and across a range of geographical and societal spaces. The emphasis on humanities-informed feminist methodologies and practical research skills will enable you to conduct a substantial piece of independent research.

Computer Science is founded upon Maths, and the study of the two together allows you to explore topics core to both whilst gaining an insight into how they intersect.

Maths influences Computer Science, from designing and analysing efficient computer programs to developing formal proofs that a piece of software does what was intended. This is especially important, for example, if the software is being used to fly a plane.

Increasingly, Computer Science is also being used to find solutions to mathematical issues. Computers are used to solve long-standing mathematical problems, as they can help visualise complex numerical data, search for solutions, and make number manipulation faster.

These teams have to be directed, organised and inspired by managers, who are often engineers of considerable talent and experience.

Teamwork and collaboration are essential when responding to design criteria, rigid timelines and unexpected issues. Those with excellent management skills will help to deliver the best solution within the timeframe. Digital practices are becoming increasingly important in the heritage sector. This course draws together the Department of Archaeology's strengths in archaeological information sciences and cultural heritage to provide a combination of theoretical and applied study of heritage management with practical training in new technologies.

You will be working with a team of technology pioneers and computing scholars who lead the field in researching and developing interpretative content and digital applications for the heritage sector worldwide. You'll have the opportunity for practical placement experience within the heritage sector, develop essential IT knowledge and skills, have access to a full suite of research computing hardware and software and receive tailored careers advice from staff with significant experience of recruiting within the sector.

Security of our systems is one of the most challenging topics of our time. There is an international consensus that in order to respond to the number and sophistication of threats that we face, the level of security skills we have needs to be increased.

This forward-looking course, certified by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC)*, will give you the skills and knowledge you need in the core areas of cyber security. You'll learn the theories, principles, practices and technologies of cyber security and gain knowledge and understanding of the principles underpinning effective approaches to cyber defence.

The course emphasises important technical material that will help you make effective cyber security decisions, and addresses issues such as: identity; trust and reputation; cryptography; network security; malware and intrusion detection; risk management; and the development of high-assurance systems.

If you are interested in pursuing a career in industry or government, this course will provide you with a broad education in cyber security, which will allow you to make technically informed principled decisions.

The Centre for Medieval Studies (CMS) is the UK’s oldest and largest centre for the interdisciplinary study and research into the Middle Ages. Our expertise spans over 1,000 years and multiple disciplines and faculties, offering dedicated skills training in palaeography, diplomatic and medieval languages.

New disciplines will complement your existing experience, offering you bespoke interdisciplinary modules as well as world-class teaching in the subjects of Archaeology, Literature and Language, History, History of Art and History of Science. Our new interdisciplinary pathway examines the cultures of the Islamic world through the prism of literature, history, archaeology, art and architecture. Drawing on the wide ranging experience of our staff, you can create a bespoke programme that demonstrates the close connections across the medieval Mediterranean and beyond into Arabia, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Anatolia, Central Asia and east Africa.

In the medieval city of York, inspiration is everywhere, and you'll have access to some of the UK's most important medieval archives and museums, including York Minster Library and Archives, the Borthwick Institute for Archives, the Yorkshire Museum, and Jorvik Viking Centre.

Our course emphasises data analysis and will provide you with contemporary statistical ideas and methodologies that are attractive to prospective employers. The skills you gain are useful for a wide range of financial data analysis and in a range of other sectors where data analysis is required, for example sociology, health science, medical science or biology. This experience is also an ideal foundation for further academic study; many of our students choose to progress to PhD.

Our Statistics and Probability Group has a thriving research culture. Our group works with mainstream statistics to develop new methodology and apply it to real-world problems. The team produces world-class research, publishing in top journals. Community music is a growing career option, as more and more musicians opt to work outside formal settings like the concert hall and many orchestras and arts organisations seek to extend their audience base into the community.

Community music covers work in schools, prisons or hospitals, the development of music in under-resourced areas and with disadvantaged people and the development of creative partnerships between people of different skills and cultures. The vast majority of music programmes focus on musicology and instrumental/vocal excellence - this course will challenge you to build on these skills and think critically about the practical applications of music beyond the concert hall.

You'll leave with the well-honed skills needed to facilitate access to music for a diverse range of people. The course also covers project management and arts administration, management and consultancy, and combines scholarship with professional and charitable outcomes, experience that will be invaluable in any career you may wish to pursue.
