Biomedical Sciences is about understanding human health and human disease. We study these areas so that, ultimately, we can develop new therapeutic strategies and refine government policy to prolong life and improve the quality of people’s lives.

Biomedical Sciences at York will open up your potential to become a future leading researcher, policymaker or administrator in biomedical sciences. You will learn how to distil and critique information in the face of ambiguity and complexity. You will learn how to critically assess information to gain a balanced understanding, how to develop and test scientific hypotheses and how to present your findings clearly and concisely to experts and non-experts alike. This degree will provide you with the skills required to tackle current and future challenges to human health.

The Integrated Masters course will allow you to use and further develop research and analytical skills; you will gain experience in a research lab doing pioneering work at the forefront of their field. This experience will provide you with a platform to launch a career as a research scientist.

Our course is delivered by four University departments with outstanding biomedical research activity: The Department of Biology, The Department of Health Sciences, The Department of Psychology, and the Hull York Medical School. The combined teaching across these departments ensure you have the latest understanding of the most important topics in human biology and disease, infection and immunity, epidemiology, and neuroscience.

Our BA Human Geography and Environment builds the skills, knowledge and capacities for understanding and developing solutions for pressing 21st century social and environmental challenges. It draws on cutting-edge insights from human geography and environmental studies to critically explore the complex relationships between people, places and environments. It explores challenges and solutions to real-world problems, such as inequalities in global development, how to  achieve inclusive and sustainable change, creating sustainable food and transport systems, and the challenges of moving to sustainable consumption.

Studying Philosophy and Politics you'll develop an understanding not only of political theory but of the ancient and modern philosophical debates that drive political ideals. What is freedom, without the power to act? By what right do our rulers govern? What makes a society good and is ethical governance even possible?

You'll learn with a diverse and international student body and with opportunities to study abroad you can develop a truly global perspective. Our active Club of Politics, Economics and Philosophy (PEP) encourages debate beyond the classroom, and employers value the skills you will develop in thinking across boundaries and engaging critically with a range of material.

Combine the study of French with investigations into major philosophical questions.

You'll be taught the language component of the course in French, and will become confident using French as a means of communication, as well as for critical thinking. You'll gain an understanding of French culture and society which will underpin your abilities as a high-level communicator in the language.

By combining the study of the French language with philosophy, you'll gain an unparalleled insight into the work of thinkers such as Descartes and Sartre. You'll study the philosophical relationships between our language, our world and our minds and develop your skills in writing, reasoning and analysis.

The course has flexibility in terms of how much French and philosophy content you study over the four years. Your skills and understanding of how a language works, how we communicate and how we reason will give you a solid foundation for a huge variety of careers.

By investigating how policy is made, from development to deployment, and identifying the challenges that lie in public organisations throughout developing countries, you'll be able to provide solutions that make a difference.

From leadership and strategy to performance and human resources, this course will help you build a set of highly sought-after skills that will prepare you for managerial roles in the developing world. Our graduates have gone on to work for development charities, parliament and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as well as many other international organisations, both public and private.

You'll be taught by academics at the forefront of research across a number of political areas such as conflict, security and development, political economy, international politics, political theory and public policy.

You'll be taught in German and Spanish, so you'll become confident using your languages as a means of communication, and for critical thinking. You'll gain an understanding of German and Spanish culture and societies which will underpin your abilities as a high-level communicator in both languages.

Your communication skills will be complemented by investigations into the science and structure of language through a range of linguistics modules. The course has flexibility in terms of how much German, Spanish and linguistics content you study over the four years. By the end of your studies, you will be equipped for a range of professional roles that call for expertise in language, linguistics and culture.

This course is ideal if you want an interdisciplinary approach to Molecular Cell Biology. You will have a wide range of options to tailor the course to your developing interests.

You will learn about the relationships between the structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids, and the molecular mechanisms behind immunology, genetic engineering and cancer. This course is ideal for students who have an interest in studying biological systems at the molecular and cellular levels, encompassing areas that are at the forefront of biomedicine and biotechnology today.

The integrated Masters course introduces a four-year programme that specifically focuses on the skills needed for a career as a research scientist. During this time you work with researchers within one of the UK’s top bioscience departments to learn specialised techniques; you will gain experience in a research lab doing pioneering work at the forefront of their field. You also undertake specialist research training and take Masters-level modules.

Adding a year in industry or a year abroad are both an option with this course too, so you can benefit from the advantages that a year away can bring. The Department of Biology will provide you with the opportunity to learn in new, spacious and modern teaching laboratories which provide excellent facilities for practicals and small group project work, alongside our state-of-the-art computing facilities.
